Easter weekend fun…

Just a few things we did this weekend…

Lamb cupcakes for kids dessert…

{Soooo…easy and fun for them to make! A large center marshmellow in the center covered in white icing helps the little marshmellows stick. Add pink jelly beans for the ears, chocolate for the hooves and black icing for the eyes and mouth. YUM! Frank LOVED these. He’s officially addicted to mini-marshmellows.}

We took our planting seeds on Good Friday to a whole new level! It started out looking like this…

In the end stages looked more like this…

Rich finished it up and thanks to the inspiration and kit from “Gardens to Gro” we’re adding more home-grown veggies to our planting list this year. Rich and the kids planted more herbs in our tiered herb garden, and next weekend we’ll be adding sand, compost, soil and lots of veggie seeds here. No more bunnies helping themselves (we hope) with this nifty structure:)

And finally…celebrate as we welcome Ulrich a new brother in Christ into the body of Christ! Ulrich is one of our cashier’s at our local Kroger. He shared the good news with me today that yesterday he trusted Christ as His Savior and was baptized. Ulrich is from Camaroon, Africa–and I loved that he was so excited to share this news with anyone and everyone coming through the grocery line. He practically shared the gospel with me as I bought corn chips for a yummy corn dip I made—and what a sweet reminder how the Lord is working all around us. Praise be to God this Easter season!

HAVE A BLESSED WEEK AHEAD! And join us for daily readings by going to www.oneyearbibleonline.com and click on the “One Year Chronological Bible” on the left hand side. You can also sign up for RSS feeds to your google blog reader on the right OR even for the daily scripture reading to be emailed or texted to you! Very cool. Let each day ahead be one with the risen Savior in your hearts seeking Him daily—because through our ups and downs…He is the only thing that remains constant. And therefore…the only thing I can cling to with confidence!

XOXO!

That garden bed is so AWESOME!!! Definitely going to look into that! We don’t have time for a huge garden anymore but LOVE having the fresh veggies and goodies! That looks sooo cool!

And what a joyous blessing to have a friend that was baptized and is sharing his testimony with EVERYONE! What an example to the rest of us! 🙂 Glad you had a fabulous weekend. Need to e-mail and catch up! ♥ God Bless!

Did you know?!

Here is some really cool info for ya! Did you know that according to the Jewish calendar—today…the day many Christians celebrate the resurrection…that Thursday, April 1st was actually Nisan 17…the day according to Jewish calendars when Jesus arose? SO…the actual Passover day on Monday of last week was the Nisan 14 day the day we remember our Savior being crucified. So funny that we go by the new calendar when it was the Jewish calendar that Jesus followed. I’m not going by the Jewish calendar of course…but I think for next year—I’m totally pulling out my new book on celebrating Biblical Holidays to follow along with Jewish calendar days. And you will be AMAZED at what COOLNESS we miss not knowing Jewish events and what days they actually fell on!

FOR EXAMPLE…check this out: http://heartofwisdom.com/biblicalholidays/?p=718

What are the CHANCES?!

Oh…just 1 in 783,864,876,960,000,000.

And if it weren’t for the Jewish calendar…I would have totally missed the WOW in that one.

God is so cool like that.

Just had to share!

There are so NO coincidences in my opinion!!!

Have a blessed day!

Cool…. like there was no coincidence that you became such an inspiration and amazing woman I call friend?! Yeah….. no coincidence. 😉 Just ordained.

Kym - April 7, 2010 - 12:16 pm

Did you get the book on Biblical Holidays from the site you referenced in this post? My daughter’s best friend, who also happens to live next door, is Jewish and this looks like a fun way for us to do life together as Christian and Jew (and hopefully one day all Christian with Jewish heritage!)

Resurrection in your heart…no matter what your day brings…

The Resurrection

Matthew 28:1-10 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalen and the other Mary went down to look at the tomb.

There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shoke and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was cruicified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afriad. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Sitting here are home on Easter Sunday…as my family is at church all but me, Parker and Frank…I am reminded that things aren’t always what they think they will be. For weeks we have built up celebrating today by doing the Lent Tree–and today…is by far my most favorite day of the year. I long for the worship time at church…the excitement shared in the Word…but today I sit on my yellow couch…babe upstairs napping and a little man who I love that says his tummy hurts. As we snuggled watching the animated Passion of Christ together, I am remembering that it’s not about me. It’s really, really, really—really about trusting Him for each day, clinging to Him through the dips and turns and following Him with joy in our hearts even when life brings things we don’t expect.

As I read Carol Brazo’s chapter on celebrating Easter in her book No Ordinary Home I had a perfect Easter planned out. For weeks I dreamed of me waking up Laney–squealing, “He is alive!” and then waking up the boys to celebrate with them. Brazo shared that this was what she had always done in her home—as it was Mary and Martha, women, whose heritage was being the first to hear of Jesus’s resurrection. Amazing tradition, huh?! YES. Oh, I couldn’t wait. But instead…Laney jumped up and ran downstairs before I woke up. Parker was running a fever last night so I didn’t feel I should wake him with such joy. And I had forgotten to go to the grocery for breakfast food–so I needed to get creative with my parents here and cook biscuits from scratch. It just wasn’t the day I had envisioned. But isn’t this so often true of our days…our journeys…the things we dream for whatever they may be?!

Yet.

He is Risen!

He is Alive!

And without instruments.

Without a message of encouragement from a pastor.

The Spirit Himself can encourage me.

Today can still be my Easter. He is alive!

Tomorrow can too.

Help us all, Lord…each morning to arise with revelation.

That indeed…

YOU

ARE

ALIVE.

YOU

ARE

REAL.

YOU

ARE

OUR

SAVIOR.

And although things might not always seem like should be…how we hope…even though our hearts may often feel like a roller coaster of emotions…

YOU

ARE

CONSTANT.

Jesus cried out on the cross, “I thirst.”

I

DO

TOO.

I thirst for you today.

Thank you Father…that on the 3rd day…you rose again.

And I know am able to freely come—directly to you…RIGHT NOW…and have my thirst filled.

FILL

US

LORD

WITH

YOU

ALONE.

Help us to trust in You.

MAY

YOU

BE

OUR

SONG.

How blessed and thankful I am to walk this journey with your families…with your hearts…and to trust in our Savior together each day. May you have a blessed Easter…and may each day be spent celebrating His resurrection in your hearts.

Prayer request…

Back in January, we asked many of you to please pray for us that our FDL (Favorable Determination Letter) would arrive from Immigration USCIS after sending in our 161-A form. 3 months later—we are still waiting. Richard went to the USCIS local office (about 30 minutes away) this week—and got the answer that it has not been processed, but they would try to get to it next week. We cannot receive a referral WITHOUT this form. We are waiting and trusting—and I know the Lord knows how we like things to be exciting;-)…soooo as I fully expect the form to come in BEFORE our referral (pray expecting right?!)…I also expect that it’ll be close. BUT I don’t want it to be so close my stomach is in knots;).

Today (Saturday..the day before Easter) is often referred to as “Mystery Saturday”. The disciples mourned, “I believe He was Savior–we let Him down–will He really come back?!” As our FDL also remains a mystery for us—will you pray with us that it comes back soon and that we would trust our Savior who is over ALL things in His perfect timing.

Thank you sweet readers, friends and family for being on this journey with us. Thank you for laying your hearts on the line with us as we trust in Him in new ways. Thank you for praying with expectation and loving us in this process. I don’t know what the future holds, but I know who holds our future!

Today’s scripture reading: Judges 9:22-11:28

Praying, Praying, Praying! Ours took about 3 months to get back and I think we were about #10 on the list when we got it. When I talked with AGCI about worrying about its whereabouts they said not to stress until we were in the top 5 and then they have some ways of speeding up the process. My biggest concern was that fingerprints wouldn’t go through.

I will definitely keep praying for you guys and this! I would call your congressman’s office – that was one of the options to get it processed quicker.

Tiffini - April 3, 2010 - 11:35 am

Andrea, I am praying. When we received our referral, we had not even been fingerprinted yet! I am going to e-mail you with some specifics, but I wanted to tell you that we got our FDL TWO WEEKS after fingerprinting!!! Our God can do anything that HE purposes to do.

Amy @ Filled With Praise - April 3, 2010 - 1:16 pm

Praying friend! Hope your family has a wonderful Easter celebration.

Maintaining Peace While Raising Warriors… {Reading: Judges 3:31-6:40}

Don’t you love it when you are doing consistent Bible study…and each day’s reading seems to so perfectly align with what you are currently learning in your life?! That seems to happen so often for me—and today was another one of those days!

Some things on my heart today…and maybe yours too…

No matter how calm and peaceful I try to keep things…chaos always seems to happen—how can I maintain a peaceful heart amoung chaos? Oh no—I hear whining in the back of my mini-van (again)…not today Lord—how can I raise boys to be men who are warriors and not whiners? Peace…peace…I need the peace that surpasses all understanding. Strength…strength…I need strength that comes from only the Lord.

He who created the mountains…can bring strength to the weary…

He who stilled the waters of the raging sea…can calm my waters when I trust Him to do so…

Today the craft queen overbooked herself. Here’s a run down of our craziness simply to entertain you and to make you feel better at my expense;)…
7am – arise
7:30 – finish cutting out bunny ears (for Laney’s class craft)…P’s off to school with daddy carpooling (daddy rocks!)
8am – package the rest of the beads (for Parker’s class craft…making Easter story bracelets and scavenger hunt)
8:30am – Running around house looking for Easter basket for Laney. Where is my stapler? Oh gosh—the baby. Someone needs to get the baby up. That’d be me;). Poop everywhere. Nice. Good morning sweet baby;).
9am – All cleaned up, L-bird dressed…Frank just ate a bead. Frank is choking. Heimlich maneuver on 16 month old. Successful. Hug baby on floor and praise Jesus for working that one out. Race out door for L’s drop off.
9:15am – Hello friendly face at Dunkin’ Donuts…I need a large coffee, extra cream and extra sugar…yep–make it taste like one of your doughnuts.
9:30am – Off to P’s school. Frank baby taggin’ along unwillingly. Date with laminating machine for scavenger hunt.
10am- Meet another mom for scavenger hunt…realize I left red beads at home for hunt/story. Red beads are very important because they stand for Jesus and His love. We can’t leave Him out of our Easter story.
10:30 – Praise Jesus! We found red beads in someone else’s classroom! He provided!
10:45 – Office Max for last minute supplies for Laney’s craft
11:00 – Set up at Laney’s preschool…Frank is missing his nap. This isn’t gonna be pretty. Yes, I should have gotten a babysitter. Frank just put a stick glue top in his mouth. Got it out before heimlich number 2.
11:15 – Egg hunt with kids…no Frank—you can’t pick up the eggs because each has a child’s name on it just for them. Sorry kid…I should have gotten a sitter.
11:30 – Snack time. Sorry Frank you can’t have peanut butter…oh wow–this really isn’t pretty. Am I even helping here?
11:50 – Craft begins. Realize I don’t have enough strips of border for bunny ear cap…make due—cut them shorter…OK…so these won’t really even fit on their head. Make craft anyway. I should have bought more border strips for their heads. 4 year olds heads are bigger than I thought.
12:15 – Clean up.
12:25 – Realized I just remembered I have another child—Parker…whose carpool was at 12:00. Nice. Mommy not only blew it…but she blew it. Race out of school…heart is beating…Laney says, “Mommy, you shouldn’t drive fast, you could get a ticket.”
12:35 – Run in Parker’s school. He is sitting there in office peaceful and unaware. Sweet secretary says, “We knew you had Laney’s party and we understoon. Andrea, you have your hands full—please don’t worry about it. And when is our baby from Africa coming home??? We can’t wait.”

Ahhhh…Lord–your sovereign grace! And it’s just lunch time!

Does this sound familiar? I hope not…but some times no matter how much we plan these days just happen. Momma said there’d be days like this, there’d be days like this, my momma said. These were actually more typical when I was photographing part-time (why I quit) and I realize these days will probably happen more often with the more children we have. My flesh wants to say, “I can’t do this Lord!”

BUT…my God says, “My grace is sufficient for you.”

“My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

Today was not about me. It was about Him being strong in my weakness. My morning was a flop. My bunny ears were a flop. (No pun intended.) BUT…I will not in my strengths but in my weakness.

Verses to encourage us in His strength today…

“Blessed is the man whose strength is in You,
Whose heart is set on pilgrimage.
As they pass through the Valley of Baca [weeping],
They make it a spring;
The rain also covers it with pools.
They go from strength to strength;
Each one appears before God in Zion.” Psalm 84:5-7

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

“As your days, so shall your strength be.” Deuteronomy 33:25

“Though the fig tree may not blossom,
Nor fruit be on the vines;
Though the labor of the olive may fail,
And the fields yield no food;
Though the flock may be cut off from the fold,
And there be no herd in the stalls—
Yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will joy in the God of my salvation.
The Lord God is my strength;
He will make my feet like deer’s feet,
And He will make me walk on my high hills.” Habakkuk 3:17-19

“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever.” Philippians 4:19-20

I have now…by coming to the cross…been made strong.

Amen.

Thank you Jesus for your redeeming work.

Which brings me to my next question and today’s reading (if you are reading through the Bible chronologically with us the reading today is: Judges 3:31-6:40)…

As much as my flesh would want to read today’s scripture and say, “Women rule!” or “I am woman hear me roar!”….or “Look what we women can do when men are chicken…” Ok…I’ll stop, I’ll stop. But today’s reading really makes me scratch my head and instead say, “Where are all the warriors!?”

I find myself some times today—asking the same question. I see many women being the spiritual leaders in their home. Many woman leading the band-wagon fighting for justice for the orphan…the poor…and I wanna shout where are the warriors?! But instead of shouting…I am humbled. As a mom, I am humbled as I drive my mini-van and consider if I am raising warriors.

Read today’s reading and process how the men act and women stand up.

Deborah and Jael rocked the enemies face off (literally). Deborah had to send for Borak and when she told him to go fight Sisera and call out 10,000 warriors—what does Barak say?

“Will you go with me pretty please?”

EEK.

Is that your idea of a warrior.

Deborah agrees—but I love her reponse. “Sure, I’ll go with you. But by your choice the honor of the win the Lord has promised won’t be yours. It will belong to a woman instead. You okay with that?”

Where are our warriors?

Later…in comes Jael, the wife of Heber. She brilliantly convinces the enemy’s leader HIMSELF into her tent. Fills him up with milk…he is full, tired and goes to sleep. AND then plants a tent stake right through his forehead and kills him.

Where are our warriors?

Next what happens…in comes Deborah and Barak singing a song. Nice Barak. You won’t lead the battle but you’ll sing the victory song with Deborah at the end. I just don’t get it. YET…the Lord used the women and defeated the enemy as promised through their willingness to step up to the plate.

My boys are just 5, 1 and…my Ethiopian boy—my guess under 1…yet we want to begin to build our sons into warriors NOW. Several years ago, we fell in love with this book about raising a modern day knight…

This is an incredible book (you can buy it here) that our family loves. It focuses on the father’s role in guiding his son to authentic manhood…not “Deborah or Jael” fighting for him and holding his hand as he fights his own battles…but from knight to knight…warrior to warrior…giving goals for our soon-to-be knights and using ceremony to mark their achievements of manhood. One of the most powerful things I have been a part of is when Richard’s cousin was old enough to receive his family crest. Tears were shed as we all read words of encouragement from our hearts to this young squire. And although at the time I just had a 1 year old toddler boy on my hip—I ran right out and bought this book and knew this was something I wanted to incorporate in raising our boys to be men.

So while I do want Laney to be able to fight when she needs to and to be strong as Deborah and Jael…I would also PREFER she not be put in the position to HAVE to do so. I want to be about raising my men to modern day knights…who understand chiverlry, protecting others, fighting for justice and being a warrior of God.

And as I reflect on this…on even a crazy day—remembering this goal changes how I approach and deal with chaos. As everyone was whining in the car—I was able to turn around to my 5 year old who deeply wants to be a warrior and say, “Parker, do you want to be a warrior?” Whining stopped. Tears over an itchy ear ceased. And for a short moment there was peace. I was able to quietly explain how it is okay to cry—but we need to save our tears for real pain and talk calmly and rationally.

Now…on to enjoy my very few moment of peace as the children have their quiet times and I read up on this knight book that was collecting dust. I almost forgot my purpose for all the chaos.

Wishing you much peace and wisdom as you love on and build into your children.

XOXO,

Andrea

P.S. I *have* to film some time this week my little warrior training for Winter Olympics 2022 (the first year he can compete;). It is actually crazy and hilarious all in one…and I have to close my eyes and pray for the Lord’s protection as he flies 60 miles an hour down our steep driveway on a coaster car without breaks. You should see the neighbors faces and the people who shake their heads;). {The teenage boys though…we catch them watching them through the bushes as it’s so nutty;) I know they want to try it…but it’s seriously dangerous and crazy!} The funnier part is…that our little princess is right behind him! A wise woman once told me who successfully raised 5 modern day knights that she was once asked about something crazy she let her son do, “Isn’t that dangerous?” Her response? “Absolutely. But isn’t there danger in everything?” So let their courage fly—and close your eyes and pray;).

P.S.S. We are still waiting for our FDL (favorable determination letter) to arrive from USCIS. We have been waiting for months now—and looks like the grand ole South is just backed up. Please pray this letter arrives in perfect timing—and for our hearts to trust the One over our process. THANK YOU!

I really need to read that book. Whining has been a big struggle with my little boy lately, and I have come to my whit’s end more than once!

Jennifer - April 1, 2010 - 7:35 pm

Great post! My hubby and a group of men have used this book and designed their own “Knight Training” and system starting the boys at age 7. It is such a blessing! Just today we were talking about being a Page and behavior that meets that standard! Page, squire, knight.

Sounds like chaos was the understatement of your morning, although I did enjoy the chuckle. Glad every one had limbs attached and breathing by the time your day was done. =) Have a peaceful evening.

We love that book at this house… and I just picked up “Raising a Modern Day Princess” for the wee-est one. My husband has structured many “warrior training” excursions for our boys around the book’s principles. 🙂

My dear Andrea!

I just relived my days like the one you just described! You are doing such a wonderful job of rearing young warriors! As our sons were coming along, my goal was to bring them to maturity without permanently damaging one another! They have turned out to be awesome Christian men…still doing dangerous things, I might add.

Your comments about the need for warriors is so “right on.” Women are stressing themselves out with battles they were never meant to fight. Praise God for young warrior mothers who are training sons to assume their rightful role that God intended.

Keep on fighting; it’s worth every moment!

I love you!
