Happy Fall Y’all!

Oh…my favorite season!!! I can hardly stand it!!! SO…on my last trip to Walmart–I snatched up 4 long sleeved t-shirts in Fall colors (just $3.50 each!) + a packet of “Heat-n-bond”. Seriously–if you have never played with “heat-n-bond” you have to pick a packet of it up on your next trip to Walmart (and Hobby Lobby also carries “heat-n-bond lite”…works great too). You can create your own appliques in less than 5 minutes! Just iron on the heat-n-bond paper on fabric, cut out your shapes for appliques, peel the backing off–and then iron on to your shirt. While the kids napped this afternoon–and JUST before a Fall festival party at a friend’s house…I cut pumpkin shapes out with heat-n-bond and ironed them on to the solid shirts…And just for extra reinforcement, I went back and did a zig-zag stitch over it (it’s not perfect…but it does the trick for last minute appliques!)(Heat-n-bond and different fun fabrics are great to just have on hand…and stash some solid t’s away–and this makes a for a quick, fun project for any season…think turkey, Christmas tree, cupcakes, Easter eggs…)

And LOW and behold–they even posed for a picture in their pumpkin shirts before I let them lose to play!

AND…to have ALL your babies LOOKING AND SMILING?! Oh…melt this momma’s heart!(Thank you Ricard for dancing like a chicken behind me to make that happen!!!)

THEN…momma was so happy-so they were set lose for some good Fall fun with friends…hay rides, a potluck meal, a candy hunt and roastin’ smores. This is Isaac’s first Fall with us…and he wasn’t sure what to think about all the craziness with our group of friends…but I think he had fun…nothing like a teething toddler full of drool…but this ONE I could just gobble right up!

Daddy and ITY…

Frank told his brother ALL about hayrides…while Isaac told him right back that he was a big man–and he had this whole thing already figured out! Isaac was quite the pro on the hay ride if I do say so myself;)

He tried HIS BEST to fit in with Laney and her girlfriends…it gave the girls some laughs—and who can resist not letting this cute little man in with the fun! Here they are going through their candy bags after the candy hunt! Laney was trying her best not to wipe her chocolate fingers on her outfit…while ITY was trying his best to try on the crown!

Little E tried to tell him that he was a silly goose and princess crowns are for the girls…

BUT our little man is a persistant little booger–and he isn’t one to give up trying his best…

Thankful for fun with friends…and families who share our heartbeat!!! Isn’t this a beautiful picture of God’s precious little children of the world!?

Hope you all have a GREAT week ahead!

XOXO,

Andrea

Bobi Bobbitt - October 25, 2010 - 8:46 pm

Adding Heat and Bond to my Walmart list right now! So cute!!!

Amazed by our Creator…

I’m always amazed at how our God provides…how He always works out the details…

really…you won’t believe how HE has been the one planning the adoption momma retreat (Created to Care Women’s Retreat)…call me crazy–but I truly believe that He is the one who called the 200 women to join us…each one He has orchestrated to come–most from across the country. (We do have a waitlist now–and we are going to try and squeeze in as many as we can–so if you are patiently waiting on the waitlist…know we are doing the best we can!)

I spent ALL DAY Friday on the phone with Paypal because don’t you know when around 200 women send their $100 registration fee in just 2 days (seriously–what women’s retreat fills up in 2 days?!) it raises a flag for Paypal. Don’t you worry…I got it all worked out (after about 8 hours) and now I think everyone at Paypal ALSO knows about our retreat and adoption…because you know I not only explained the craziness BUT I also told them MORE than they wanted to know–because IF you know me…you know that’s the way I roll;). Paypal ALSO agreed they thought we should just open up a non-profit account so we could do this same type of retreat year after year! Our precious event coordinator at the resort is also excited (thank you April for all your help!) and she, too, agrees that these moms NEED this!!! I of course expected some hurdles…but shouldn’t we always expect that when we are following what God asks us to do? BUT…we should also expect to see Him in the process and for HIM to be the one planning what is ahead!

AND you won’t believe how HE is the one planning…truly I feel like I am barely lifting a finger in the planning part and HE is bringing the details to me! When He put the phrase CREATED TO CARE on my heart…I knew that WE were created to care for our families and orphans…but little did I realize what HE really wanted to do in this retreat…but to show us how we are really created to care for ONE ANOTHER as we follow Him in caring for those I believe He has a special love for. The women He is raising up to minister to these women–are mostly women who want to come to this retreat anyway…and we are CARING FOR ONE ANOTHER—and that alone…amazes me—and THIS was HIS idea!!! Too often, I think we need to seek “expert” advice from those who haven’t even been there…or from people who the world considers “famous” to be our role models or the ones leading the way…but for this retreat—God is showing me that He has others set aside that have been following Him…not on the sidelines but completely running His race for years unnoticed by the world…and these women have so much to teach us, share with us and encourage us with.

Just a few of the many ways we are seeing God provide…

We prayed for someone to lead worship…but I felt like it needed to be a women…and we said it’d be great if she played the guitar also–to keep it simple. These moms aren’t concerned with lights and fame–but just resting and meeting with the Father. I also said it’d be sweet if the worship leader had a heart for adoption and orphans. WELL…the new song you hear on my blog right now—that my friends, is one of the moms attending our retreat. Who will lead worship. Who has a heart for orphans. Who recently brought home two sons from Uganda. I love how God provides.

We prayed for someone with experience to lead us and minister to us…I emailed Empowered to Connect and asked if there was ANY way Karyen or Amy could come be with us. It was a LONG shot I realized. For many reasons. One they are in Texas. Two they speak at huge conferences…not small retreats (at the time I was thinking 25-50). BUT Amy immediatly responded and said she felt like God was in this and she wanted to be there…and she’d do as much or as little as we needed her to…she just wanted to support this and be a part of it!!! WOW!

We’ve prayed over breakout leaders…and God continues to provide…and we are seeing that many of the topics we would want to talk about as adoptive moms–are really able to be led my moms who have adopted themselves…God is really teaching me that it is HIS desire for us to CARE for ONE ANOTHER…and that He has equipped us to do that already!!! I believe the retreat ahead is not only about rest and retreating to be with Him–but also how He has ALREADY given us everything we will need to run this race well–with Himself and with one another.

There are so many other things…and I am so thankful…that it isn’t me planning but HIM. One again…I am amazed by YOU Lord!

On a personal note at our house—the time came this weekend for the little bird my kids were helping heal to let go. This was a GOOD lesson for us…but hard. We talked about how some in God’s creation need our help to heal and then to be released to reach it’s full potential…while others in God’s creation would need us to nurture them longer. (I couldn’t help but think about how this lesson will one day be used if we ever foster.) Parker and Laney were such big daddies and mommies in letting their little one go…but Laney said she just couldn’t watch because it hurt her heart too badly. Parker said he wanted to be the one to let him go…and I was proud of him for taking a lead and helping the little bird he nursed back to health fly again…This birdy knew what he was made for…as soon as we brought the cage out he started to fly INSIDE the cage. We waited forever with the door open–and Parker finally decided to lift the roof so he could have an easier exit to the world…AND OFF HE WENT!Then way up in a cypress he perched…and we bid him well wishes and said our goodbyes…And then…when the children had waved and blew their kisses…he flapped his wings and was gone. Still, we waited and waited and waited to see him again…but all we heard were little tweets from farther and farther away. Not sure if the song was even his…but we knew that was where he belonged–and we walked away together imaging how wonderful it must be to fly again.
Isn’t God’s creation just amazing? Truly we were MADE to care. To care for others…to care for one another. And something beautiful happens and EVEN HEALS in our own heart and soul when we choose to live a life of caring for others…putting others before ourselves–and deeply caring. I pray I don’t miss or overlook too many things in my own selfishness…because really–my heart has more to gain by serving others over myself.

I’ll end on a few pictures of my sweeties loving and serving one another today…

The little stinker…he makes the funniest faces!

Hope you all have a great weekend!!!(Aren’t the big brother and little bro shirts TOO cute…found those at the GAP outlet for just $9!)

Asher—it should be! Turn the volume up on your computer and see if you still can’t hear it…it is working on both of my computers…so it should be working:)

Expecting in November 2010?!

Wiphan’s greatest need is to raise up monthly sponsors for our children. We are busy getting a few little ones ready to be added to our database. While we have 450 kids in our program, we have under 100 sponsored on the site—BUT we are working steadily to add new kiddos to our site needing sponsorship each month. If you would like to be a sponsor for one of these new ones—go to the Brightpoint link (a ministry that helps us find our sponsors) here: Sponsor a Wiphan student You can click on one of the “expecting” profiles…and we’ll contact you in November to tell you all about your child once we have them logged in. I know this is a different way to sponsor a child, but it is our SPONSORS like many of you who help keep Wiphan running! And we always need more to join us! So…instead of waiting until we can get all the new info logged in for our newest children in need of sponsors–we wanted to give those of you who feel led to join us a chance to go ahead and begin the program…and you can be “expecting in November”! AND that will be JUST in time to send a letter over to your child after you learn all about him or her for the December travel group to take it over to let your new one know someone across the world is caring for and loves them!!!

Craziness at our house…

FIRST–I’ve been totally MIA due to retreat craziness!!! We thought we’d have this really fun retreat for 50 mommies…and it’s turned to almost 200…so after a few last minute folks slide in to keep it under 200…we’ll start a waitlist. We want to keep the number lower (although 200 is big!) so we can really bless and pour into these mommies–and so they can REALLY connect with one another! I’m thinking next year we’ll need to have REGIONAL retreats! I’ll only be facilitating the one in the South though;).

SO..in between the craziness of planning the retreat of the century for adoption mommas…we have been invaded at our house. Be afraid people—be VERY, very afraid…

I’ll spare you the costume showing now—but our whole family is dressing up in Star Wars theme for Halloween (someone has asked me to post on Halloween–not touching it people…we dress up for FUN and stay away from creepy)None of my kids have seen the movie–but Parker is obsessed with Star Wars legos right now! I think Rico Suave will be a Clone War character…but it does look good on Frankie baby doesn’t it?!

In other news at our house to add to the craziness…Our little ITY was asked to be in the movie Fast and Furious and to play Vin Diesel’s son. We said no though. Ok…I was THIS close to taking him down for filming…it would have been 3 days of filming a nursery scene—BUT…

1. I don’t think he looks that much like Vin Diesel…even if he has an African American wife in the movie.

2. It would mean 3 days of no naps and babysitters for the other kids.

3. ATTACHMENT! I don’t think it would be good for attachment to have all these crazy strangers holding him and lights…cameras…action. AND isn’t that movie R rated? SO…we opted out. Casting director wasn’t very happy with us–but I told him we aren’t Hollywood people and I was sure the other baby in line would be perfect.

Can you believe the funny things we get into?! Just sayin—I always have a good story!!!

And SPEAKING of movies…GET THIS action. I’m so not kidding either. SO…MONDAY my kids are playing outside when my neighbor RUNS in my house and says, “You might want to tell Parker and Laney to come inside RIGHT now!!!” So…I call them in. My sweet neighbor who saw all the action witnessed a wreck just in front of our hood. Man hits lady in his car–jumps out and hands her a wad of money and tells her not to call POlice. She starts to call anyway—man grabs lady cell phone and runs into our hood. Neighbor runs to my house to tell me to get P and L inside. We lock doors. Helicopters start. 2 hours later…Police still looking—I need to get my kids to P’s soccer—so we run out and leave and wait to come back with Rico Suave. Thankfully they found the guy…and all is well again. And this was NOT a movie. Craziness. Just had to tell you that story.

AND then…as if we didn’t have enough going on…last night–I put P and L in the van to go to Trader Joes (we love Trader Joes!). My kids love looking for the bear in Trader Joes and getting to pick out a treat from the treasure chest when they find him! SO…we were going to Trader Joes and I decide to run in Office Max to get ink for my printer to print out all YOUR registration forms for the retreat. BUT we never made it inside (and I STILL need printer ink) because there was a little baby bird on the sidewalk that had been hurt:(. Parker, Lane and I sat with him for awhile…and when we realized he wasn’t going any where without help–we got the Office Max man to give us a box. THEN we went to the Pet Smart on the other side of Trader Joes to ask them for help. They said he was a poor little hurt bird—they checked him out–and they said they thought he would live but he’d need some TLC. The man there offered to let him stay…and we tried to walk away.

Parker’s heart couldn’t do it though. His voice started to crack and he told me how worried he was about this bird…and now—well…we have this in our house…

We have been talking a lot about the BEST place for this bird once he gets better…and reasoning with what we should do—but for now–he needs to get better here…We have a soft spot for little ones that need some extra love—and although I said we’d NEVER have pets as long as we had babies in diapers…we now have Princess Tiger…Parker and Laney have argued over the sex of the bird–Laney says her name is Princess–and Parker says his name is Tiger…

SO…Princess Tiger it is…

Isaac LOVES Princess Tiger and is saying “Bir, Bir, Bir!” And Frankie baby…well, he loves showing him anything and everything…how precious is Frank here showing Princess Tiger his lego tire?!

As if one new pet wasn’t enough—Laney went on a girls outing with Aunt Nisia and came back with this…The fishy’s name is Sparkles–and Laney wants me to tell you all that Sparkles is BOTH a girl AND a boy. Hmmmm…interesting;).

Alright folks! That’s all the craziness I’ve got for ya today!!! Can’t wait to meet the approximately 200 of you who are comin’ to the retreat in February…now—maybe TONIGHT getting ink for my printer will actually happen!

Lylas,

Andrea

P.S. Please tell me that someone laughed when they saw the word Lylas;-)

I’ve had a couple of little wild birds. One was found in a parking garage at a mall, with no feathers yet. I thought he would die, but put him on tissues or something in my car so he wouldn’t get squished or die on the concrete. Just in case, we bought formula at the pet store in the mall, and…weeks later, we had a happy, healthy sparrow on our hands. As he got bigger, we took him outside for feedings and free time, and he gradually started to fly a bit. Then would fly off for a while, then he eventually decided he was independent enough to stay out on his own. Same thing with a little robin our family rescued once (and he stuck around that summer to sing & let us know he was ok, after he moved out to the trees). Hope all goes well!

Lara - October 20, 2010 - 6:45 pm

Okay, Andrea, your life is officially way more exciting than mine. And you officially have way more integrity than me regarding putting ITY in that movie!

Megan - October 20, 2010 - 8:56 pm

That was some great laughs Andrea, thank you for sharing your crazy with us!
Although I have to admit I STILL think your crazy for turning down that movie! My hubby’s jaw dropped to the floor! (We love Vin over here ๐Ÿ˜‰

GAP - October 20, 2010 - 9:26 pm

You absolutely MUST find the Andy Griffith episode where Opie … (well you’ll just have to find that part out for yourself) and he raises the 3 orphaned baby birds, naming them Winkin, Blinkin and Nod. If memory serves, after Opie is pursueded that the birds need to be set free and the deed is done, he says something like, “Paw, that cage seems mighty empty.” and Andy responds with something like, “Yep! But don’t the trees seem mighty full?” BTW,I’m no bird expert but my money is on Princess Tiger being a male. ๐Ÿ˜‰

kristi johnson - October 20, 2010 - 11:17 pm

yes, laughed at lylas…but you HAD to have auditioned for the part, right?? where are you going for these movie auditions..or do you send in a pic?? I want LL in movies…Imean, come on..i could give the $ away to people adopting ๐Ÿ™‚ too funny…cute post, kj

LOVE your blog. I stalk your blog regularly, I admit it (I live in Marietta and like to see the places and events that you talk about that I recognize, that’s kinda fun! – not to mention your AMAZING photos)…but I HAD to de-lurk today to ask this question. I realize that you have many, many readers here, not to mention an international presence through Wiphan, etc…but my goodness…what a presence you must have if a casting director was aware of your precious ITY! Perhaps his story is more far-reaching than you knew? (I’m sure there might be a far more boring, mundane explanation…perhaps Frank’s previous acting experience, etc…but I’m choosing to believe otherwise!) What a lovely family you have! I always enjoy your uplifitng words and encouraging spirit!

Blessings,
Melissa

Your life is insane Andrea. I love the you somehow fine the time to organize a retreat for 200 women…yet still have the patience in your heart to let your kids love on a baby bird. Truly amazing. I’m feeling inspired…as I always do after I read your blog. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m sad I won’t be able to do the retreat this year but hopefully there will be another one next year and I would LOVE to attend! What an awesome idea .. I tried to make it work:(

I am both scared and completely excited!!!! (:

So wish I could attend the retreat that I keep hearing so much about. We’ll be probably traveling again in January to bring our daughter home! Amazing the need for such a weekend!!! I’d love to help plan one up around the Ohio area, except that would mean that I wouldn’t get to meet all of you next year! We’ll see when that time rolls around. Praying that all the plans come together as I know God has his hand on this weekend!!!!!!

We are back from Fall Break in Borneo and I am obviously way behind the latest news in blog world. I think it is a good thing that I missed the original conference post and that it filled up quickly. Cause I would have been really upset about missing the chance to hang out with you! Ya know … cause I LYLAS and all!
Love & Blessings from Hong Kong,

Finishing up registration for the retreat!

Just posted a registration update on the retreat blog! Wow! If you have not yet paid for the retreat ($100 registration fee) you are half way there! SO…be sure to pay your registration fee if you did not when you registered!!! If you are mailing in your check–please email me for details on how to do that!

And on a personal note…I have some serious catching up to do for you all!!! We tried to go to the grocery store last night and ended up with a bird. His/her name is Princess Tiger–and I can’t wait to tell you all about him/her. If anyone knows how you tell the sex of a bird—please let me know so his/her name can be properly changed…OR don’t let me know–because it might make Laney or Parker sad depending on who is right and who is wrong. Laney named her Princess–and Parker named him Tiger. Pictures of Princess Tiger to follow;).

On an Isaac note–he did great in physical therapy today!!! He is pushing up a little on his legs…he just might be pulling up before no time!!! Such fun and exciting things happening at our house, huh?!

Hope you all have a great Wednesday!

This is amazing! My girlfriend and I wish SO much that we could come with our little ones, but I’ll be getting my Ethiopian beauties in the next few months so it’s not doable this year. HOWEVER, my girlfriend and I have already talked about hosting it in gorgeous SoCal next year, if this one is a hit. We have great connections and who wouldn’t want to come to SoCal in the middle of winter!?!?

If you’re interested in this, let’s talk. We have a great adoption network out here – and growing weekly! – especially Ethiopian adoptions. ๐Ÿ™‚

What type of bird is it? You can typically tells by the way it is colored. Males are typically the pretty ones:) That’s my two bits on birds:)
