Magnolia Leaf Christmas Garland

FIRST and most important…guess who made ANOTHER milestone?! Our little man!!! He has been home 5 months. We arrived back in the U.S. on July 2nd–5 months ago and he was 11 months old. In FIVE (5!) months, Isaac has learned to sit independently, eat babyfoods (he couldn’t do textures or any solids when we brought him home), eat fingerfoods, CRAWL!!!, say: mama, dada, bird (isn’t that funny that those are his words…BIRD of all things…but you all know how I feel about birds!), and LAST week he did this for the FIRST time!! He is a rockstar now at his NEW milestone and we are SO PROUD!!! AT 16 months old…he can…(drum roll please!!!)

Isn’t he getting so strong!! (excuse the diaper…I had been trying to catch this on film for days and I got it…so there ya go!) AND he is making the “s” sound, “t” sounds and “l” sound!!! AND he works on the Vtech computer:). He is a GENIOUS!!!! (On a serious, mommy brag note–our pediatrician really does think he is SUCH a bright little man–and I agree!!! He has this momma ALL figured out too…he knows if he cries out an any hour–he has a momma with a weakness who will come running to his bedside–and usually plop him right beside her at night!) There isn’t a day that I am not SO humbled and thankful that GOD WOULD CHOOSE US to raise yet another one of His precious children.

Please say a prayer on Tuesday at 9am (EST) as Isaac goes under anesthesia for a minor surgery with our urgologist. Please pray for a speedy recovery. He really is doing GREAT–and we are most thankful for an incredible homeopathic doctor we found that helped us learn that Isaac doesn’t have asthma or half of the other things we were unsure about. After finding this new doctor several months ago, our sick visits are no more–and we are finally finding our new grove and just enjoying our sweet family of 6! Yes, we are crazy…things are usually messy…but we are loving life—and mommy even has time and energy for crafts again!!! (Along with planning the adoption retreat and monthly fun meetings for our local African Family Fellowship!!!) ALSO on the prayer list–please pray for one of my bestfriends Melissa who is in Uganda RIGHT NOW going through the court process to bring home her beautiful son who just turned 2 years old. Melissa and Dee were brave and took their 4 year old Henry and 2 year old Mary Taylor WITH THEM to Uganda! Please keep their family, travel, health and safety in your prayers!!! I hope to have some sweet airport home-coming pictures to share with you all in January if everything goes as planned the next few weeks and over the Christmas holidays. Dee will return next week with their son, while Melissa stays in Uganda with both 2 year olds while things are finalized. PLEASE keep this momma in your prayers!!!
Isaac also made his debut on the big screen at church this morning! He waved at the camera and was a HAM while daddy tried to keep him quiet and mommy shared about Wiphan to our church’s congregation. Our church is really helping us spread the word–and we are so thankful. If you would ever like to join us in being a voice–and sharing with others in your church about Wiphan–please let me know and I’ll send you information how you can do this through media, flyers and a short slideshow about Wiphan Care Ministry!

Last but not least—a craft. EVERY now and then…I’ll take on Martha Stewart. Her crafts are usually too intense for me. BUT when I saw this one and realized it’d cost me $3 at most to pull it off—I decided to go for it! I’m still not done. I need to do the top of the stair way and attach ribbons where they touch the top of the rail…but here is my work in progress! (Won’t the ribbons hanging down make a pretty finishing touch!)The only thing I had to pay for was silver spraypaint. Martha used glue and mica–which sounded too messy to me. I opted for a can of silver spray paint. Parker gathered the magnolia leaves from the yard, Rico Suave spraypainted, and I hotglued them to little cardboard arches. You can see how Martha did hers here. Kuddos to Martha for thinking to break down the cardboard stock. And don’t waste your money on cardboard stock–just take apart some boxes as things arrive in the mail. This is really super easy–and super cheap. The way I like my crafts:).

Okay guys I’ll probably be MIA some this week helping my little man recover…hopefully he will have no more UTIs afterwards. My goal this week is to also get my Christmas cards addressed and in the mail! Isn’t it the most fun to get cards in the mail each day!!! Hope you all have a GREAT day!!!

XOXO!

Andrea

Hi Andrea,

That is incredible!! Praising God with you as you and your family celebrate another milestone. I have followed your blog for a long time now, but I’ve never commented before. I’ve been a lurker. ๐Ÿ™‚ My husband and I are just beginning the process of adopting our first child from Uganda and I can’t tell you how much of an encouragement your blog has been to me. Thank you so much for sharing your story!

Blessings, Karly

Debb - December 6, 2010 - 12:22 am

BLESSINGS to you and Isaac! May the surgery go wonderfully and the post-surgical healing go quickly!…….and may he be spared any more UTIs!!!!! :o) Great garland! Go girl! And WOW!!! Your friend is a brave soul, keeping her two children with her while she stays in Uganda and visits her son! Sending Prayers all around! :o)

Jenny - December 6, 2010 - 8:27 am

just have to say that i am soooo proud of ITY and so proud of you all! God is so good!

SleepyMom - December 6, 2010 - 9:01 am

Praying everything involved with the surgery goes smoothly. My little guy had a urological surgery when he was one too. He did so much better than I ever could have imagined. We were so nervous but he was even a champ about not getting to eat or drink anything before hand (which we honestly thought would lead to one very long meltdown). He was wanting to play and eat within 30min of waking up from the anasthesia and mostly wanting them to take that IV out of his foot!
Good luck and God bless tomorrow.

april - December 6, 2010 - 9:17 am

look at that adorable behind of his…he is scrumptious and such a miracle! so happy to see him hit another milestone!

Kristin - December 6, 2010 - 11:26 am

Sweet baby! Melt my heart why don’t ya!

Sandi - December 6, 2010 - 11:50 am

We will be praying for health for all, skilled hands to do the surgery, & a miraculous recovery. God placed orphans heavily on my heart & even though my hubby is not quite ready to adopt, I have you to thank for making me aware of Wiphan. It feels so good to know that we are supporting such an amazing cause. I would like donate my wedding dress for them to auction off but I’m not sure how to make that happen. I was saving it for my adopted daughter but feel like it would be special to have the proceeds go to Wiphan to help not one child but many. Thank you for sharing your journey. It touches my heart as I wait for my hubby to say yes to adopt!

Rebecca Harley - December 6, 2010 - 1:11 pm

way yo go – ITY!!!!! Praying for you all tomorrow

Dawn - December 6, 2010 - 2:14 pm

OK so seriously when I saw the video I started to tear up!!! Because I still remember his referral….and praying….knowing that it might not have turned out this way- BUT GOD!!!!! BUT GOD said- I have heard all of your cries and am using this AMAZING little boy to do the impossible!!!! Oh I am getting goosebumps ๐Ÿ™‚ LOVE IT!!!

missy - December 6, 2010 - 2:41 pm

Amy @ Filled With Praise - December 6, 2010 - 10:39 pm

Yay Isaac!!! So happy for your little man. He continues to do so well. Such an answer to prayers. Love you all!
Blessings,
Amy

Megan - December 7, 2010 - 12:45 am

Super cute! The mica would be pretty…but yes, messy (and expensive…we focked 6 giganto trees for our December wedding 7 years ago and the cost was up there…even buying in bulk).
Feel better mr ITY!

molly White - December 10, 2010 - 7:49 am

HUGE tears shot out of my eyes when I watched this video! So awesome!!! I am so proud of this little guy! Merry Christmas!

A Rainbow Party – Laney turns 5…

Birthday parties are my favorite. Celebrating another year. An excuse to celebrate with friends that love you no matter what. To dance. To sing. To celebrate life. And this is the way we do it at our house…we turned up the music…REALLY loud…danced to Somewhere over the rainbow and we even got a groove on with Hillsong’s Rainbow song (2nd on my playlist today if you want to check it out…it is SO much fun to dance to with the kids!!!). Today was a wonderful reminder of God’s faithfulness. NOT just with the rainbow theme–but also rejoicing with our friends. I know my little girl feels so blessed to have these dear friends celebrate with her. BUT I also do as well. Some of these friends she has shared almost every memory of her life with…and I feel so blessed to have each and every one of the precious friends who were with us today to celebrate with.

And pulling off the rainbow theme–well, it was a lot of fun!!! When Laney told me she wanted to have a rainbow party–you know this momma’s wheels got turning. And this is what the result was…Every girl got a hand-made rainbow tutu designed by yours truly. (TRULY–these are simple as pie. You just tie strips of tulle around elastic…and wa-la! And as for the rainbow arch–2 pieces of PVC pipe…lots of balloons…and a Nana, Papa and hubby that love you enough to blow up balloons until midnight.) Oh…the jello–I’d recommend starting this a couple of days early. You have to wait for each layer to set–so I had a date with jello and boiling water Friday night. But don’t you think the result was worth it?

A rainbow candy favor station (I know the moms probably loved this–hee, hee…and their dentists too;) They made colorful necklaces for a craft. And the cupcakes were multi-colored inside (seperate the batter in 4 bowls and use food coloring or food coloring gel to color each one). Then you dye the icing, add marshmellows for clouds, sour striped strips for the rainbow…and a few sprinkles for a magic touch! As if things weren’t colorful enough, Laney approved of me dressing in every color and adding the rainbow wig too. Truly, I can’t believe she lets me do half the stuff that I do. When I danced and sang–she even wanted me to pick her up…like she was proud and not embarrassed. Really, I would have been embarrassed if I were her;)

And that’s momma’s support group;). (If you are an adoption momma and you are coming to the adoption retreat…these are 3 of the moms who aren’t adoption moms who are actually helping head up the retreat!!! When I say they are my support group–I mean it!!! Through thick, thin…whatever…we support each other–and that includes rainbow parties!!!

A few other sneak peaks from the party…there was some rainbow face painting! Doesn’t Frankie baby look excited to participate?!

Special thanks to the big girls for their artistic talent!

And my big sista and her middle one. April is just 14 months older than me. Isn’t she beautiful?

Here is Frank with his future wife…my bestfriend’s daughter…she is just precious to me!!! Frank and Lexi are both VERY serious…things should be pretty boring in their future house–but at least they are consistent;)

BUT I managed a smile of her!

Then it was TIME…(Laney requested we say “cha, cha, cha” after each verse this year…which of course we always take and honor special requests!)

(On a special side note–don’t you LOVE that painting on the wall??? Aunt April bought if for Isaac in ETHIOPIA!!! I treasure it and know that he will one day too!

And then like that—she blew out the candles and another year is before us!

Happy birthday sweet girl!!! Truly–although some days can seem long and rainy…most days–are just over the rainbow beautiful. And I am so thankful to have the life the Lord gave us. I pray we use it for His glory–and that our lives speak of His promises.

Here’s to another great year! FIVE…here we come!

Preparing for Christmas…cards and the Jesse Tree

A few fun things to share!

Aren’t you always baffled with how to beautifully display the cards of your friends and family??? I just hate to put them in a basket and not be able to see them ALL at once!!!! I’m always thinking of different ways to display our Christmas cards. Last year–we did this (it was completely FULL by Christmas and it was even hard to take down because we just LOVED seeing everyone as we walked out the door!!! BUT this year…we are going to use something else…

If you have been reading my blog for awhile, then you may remember this “memo board tutorial” from a post in January (also listed in the Craft section). THIS is what we’re hanging our cards on this year:) I can easily pop the cards on it with magnets as they come in the mail!!! And it’s only the 2nd day of December…thankfully we have TWO memo boards because one is already have full:). I HEART Christmas cards!!!

Here is the tutorial from January…
I bought sheet metal from Home Depot and I used fabric I already had. However, if you purchase fabric you will want to use THICK fabric as the sheet metal edges can be a little sharp (think curtain/drapery material)
IMG_9893
Hot glue does NOT stick to metal well—but it DOES stick to fabric well. SO–I quickly hotglued my decorative fabric around the edges first (front main fabric)…
IMG_9895
This won’t hold very long–so I quickly cut my burlap fabric that will go on the back and on the edges as a frame. Hot glue around the edges and then press on your fabric backing so it will hold…
IMG_9898
Then I simply folded the edges and made a border using hotglue again…
IMG_9902

Momma had what she thought was a brilliant idea to hang with ribbon–which would mean putting 2 holes in sheet metal. What made momma think she could put holes in sheet metal? Laney was highly entertained (and maybe even a little scared!) as she watched momma unsuccessfully drill holes in sheet metal! What did finally work was a hammer and big nails! She wanted to try…but momma wasn’t about to hold the nail and let big girl at it! But she did take part in the pretty bow making. And then we hung ‘er on the wall…
IMG_9921SOOOOO…I normally use this as a memo board…but for the holidays—we’ll be using it to display our cards instead!

Sweet Parker found an abandoned bird’s nest and placed it in our bird tree this week…something just speaks to my heart when I think of birds…how God even cares for them…how God provides families…how He sets the lonely in families. Every time I spot this nest as I pass through our foyer…I stop and think for a moment…

Last but not least–I wanted to share something I also shared this time last year–and many of you already do this…but one of the SWEETEST things we do is our advent nightly devotional with the Jesse Tree. We got ours from our Gigi…who bought it from precious ladies who make them here in our city–a portion of each tree goes to a charity. There is an ornament and devotional for EACH day. (To see where to purchase the one we have–just go under “Crafts”, look under Christmas and go to the Jesse Tree post).jessetree
Our tree is so sweet because our Gigi went to one of their worshops and MADE all of our ornaments!!! I love the hard bound book with the laminated daily devotionals…and the felt ornaments are PRECIOUS.

Now…if you want a free one–you can download one this year from the blog Holy Experience!!! She even has ornaments you can print and use!!! But my kids LOVE the felt and the shaped ones…but you could always make them to go with hers too! I was feeling a little inspired last night and I overheard my bestfriend say she wanted one…so I paid a trip to Hobby Lobby and I’m busy making one for her and my sister!

It has only taken me 2 nights to complete–so it’s totally doable!!! I’ll tell you though…you’ll spend $50 on supplies–so you might as well make two because you’ll have enough supplies for 2. OR you can save yourself the time and trouble and buy the one we have already made!!!!

Alright…this momma has jello to make for the birthday party on Saturday…lots of different flavors…so it will look like THIS (or this is what we are going for anyway!!!)…I’m putting the jello layers in mini-coke glasses with fun crazy straws for decoration:). Anyone guess what Laney’s requested theme is???

Remember when I made THESE last year…I think I totally might need to do this too! You can find the instructions for those here.

Off to watch water boil!!! Hope you all have a GREAT Friday!!!

P.S. Jesse Tree shopping list posted for Sara at mixonmania.blogspot.com. You’ll need 1 yard red felt and 1/2 yard green felt from fabric section (for hanging tree), 1 wooden doyle, string (you probably already have something at home you could use to hang it with), glitter glue (I bought a pack that had gold, silver, green, blue and pink/red), and LOTS of felt 8×12 sheets (the stiff kind) in EVERY color they had – tan, white, black, light blue, dark blue, red, pink, black, green, orange and yellow and hot glue/hotglue gun.

I love your blog more and more each post!! Love the jello and memo board and jesse tree…is she having a Wizard of Oz birthday?

Sara - December 2, 2010 - 10:14 pm

No lie, I was just thinking today that I needed something to share with the kids each day to share the real meaning of Christmas, not just advent surprises. Love the Jesse tree idea! How are you making the felt ornaments? Are you using a template? I just may have added something to my already busy weekend! Do you mind to share your shopping list?

Lara - December 3, 2010 - 8:18 am

You are too much, Andrea! We are doing Ann’s Jesse tree. I like it, but I really have to modify the devotionals for my wiggly three year old.

Julie Johnston - December 3, 2010 - 8:19 am

Andrea….we must have a lot of mutual friends:) We lived in Colorado for the first 3 years we were married….and I see our pastor’s son is one of the Christmas cards you have hanging! How funny!
Love the Jesse tree. My parents did this with us growing up…and now we use the same felt pieces for our kids!

Elle J - December 3, 2010 - 10:02 am

Your end results are so professional and you always write to make it sounds so easy. I am tempted one of these days to try out your ideas to see if mine turn out the same – I have my doubts. =) I am craft-challenged!!! LOL. Very excited to see this Jello – will you post the recipe with photo after the party? Have FUN!

Happy birthday to our princess!!!

Five years ago TODAY…Richard was filming THIS…

I can’t believe it’s been five years!!! And here is Parker meeting her!!

It blows me away how fast time flies!!! Richard and I stayed up until midnight last night watching old videos!!! It started with this one and then we just couldn’t stop. We just relished in the years we’ve had as parents. Oh how I wish I could stop time!!!

Laney turns 1…

Laney turns 2…

Laney turns 3…

Laney turns 4…

Laney is FIVE!!!
SHE’S MY GIRL!!!!!!!

She, Parker and I stayed up last night and made GINGERBREAD girl and boy to take to school today to celebrate her BIG day!!! (By the way…if you don’t have time to actually COOK the gingerbread boy–we HIGHLY recommend this pre-cooked one at Trader Joes!!!!)
I think I spy someone sneaking some sprinkles in the background of this one…

Please note Laney exchanged the blue eyes for brown eyes to match hers:)

I can’t describe the connection I have with this girl!!! She has the sweetest spirit…and loves her brothers so. She has the most compassionate heart-and I am so honored to be given the responsibility to raise her. And BOY do we have a FUN Saturday planned to celebrate turning 5!!! I’ll give you a few hints…

I’ll be wearing a colorful clown wig…singing will be involved by yours truly…AND

There will be LOTS of these…

And LOTS of giggles!!! Can’t wait to celebrate with her little girlfriends!!!

Happy 5th birthday sweet girl!!! Momma is happy to see you so happy…but momma is sad to watch you grow up SO QUICKLY!!! Love you to pieces!!!

Awe, what precious pictures! Looked like a super-fun party!! I hope you get to feeling better soon, Andrea!

The Young kids have skills… (Thanksgiving Part 4)

Okay–so this marks my final catch up to our Thanksgiving craziness. AND it’s a PERFECT way to end my day today…WHICH I will spare you the details and just say it was ONE OF THOSE DAYS!!! [Do YOU ever have those??? Oh. My. Goodness!!! Okay–you have to know this part. I drove 1 hour and 15 minutes DOWN TOWN to ITY’s pulmnologist appointment in the FOG and RAIN. Traffic = Horrible. FINALLY got there 15 minutes late. Receptionist looks at me and says, “Ma’am–you supposed to be at our other office…” WHICH is 1 hour and 15 minutes away from there…BECAUSE it’s around the corner from MY HOUSE! And this part too…raced home for our post-adoption home study interview…had to check Laney and Parker out of school for it…and they were WILD. Seriously–WILD. Must be the weather. Decided to leave my house 1 hour early to go to my niece’s 12:30pm birthday next…and I had LOST my KEYS!!! Found them 1 hour and a ransacked house later…IN the birthday gift bag!!! Get to party–ITY has had a diaper explosion–which under normal conditions I have outfit backups…BUT not after I dumped out my diaper bag looking for my KEYS!!! I had to drop off party guests and go buy him an outfit! I wish I could say the day got better…but it progressively got crazier…but finally I’M HOME and tomorrow is a NEW DAY!!! (And speaking of NEW days…TOMORROW is Loo’s BIRTHDAY!!!) Okay…I HAD to share that although I said I wasn’t going to just so you know my life is NOT perfect and I have “crazy wish I could rewind or erase it” days too!!!

SO…what do we do after days like this??? Usually the SAME thing we do after crazy weeks like our Thanksgiving. We pick a fun family activity. And just enjoy each other. So this is Part 4 of our Thanksgiving break. Returning home, forgetting the absolute mess of a laundry pile and just unwinding!!!

Saturday night—we turned on some dance music and let the kids show off their skills!!! Honestly…it may look like pure craziness to everyone else…but I like to think encouraging them to perform builds their confidence:)

Frankie baby shows off his balloon juggling skills…

And he secretly is a performer…we can’t understand what he sings…but I’m sure it is uplifting…

When the “girl music” comes on, Laney shows us her dance skills…

Which some times involves being airborne…

P takes over for the fast music…

Which usually encourages the others to eventually join him AND some SERIOUS moves…

And all the while…Isaac thinks the entire performance is just AWESOME and wants to be sure daddy is totally seeing all of this!

THEN–we end with each person getting an encore performance while the rest of us pull up chairs to make it a little more serious:)

LAST BUT NOT LEAST…we ended Sunday night with Christmas tunes and more Christmas decorating…included sugar cookies by the kids!!! And after bath time and before pjs–this little baby was just too irrestible NOT to capture!!! Oh…I could just gobble him right up!

And these two made sugar cookies (gotta love the box kit from Trader Joes!!!)

How does Martha Stewart make those impossibly perfect sugar cookies by the way??? I bet her’s don’t taste good. Just sayin. I bet they don’t;). OURS, however, were 100% kid created and DELISH!

All the while the babies were challenging one another to a memory game…

I mean…seriously…that’s the way we roll people. Seriously–I think it’s funny that NEITHER baby can talk or knows what they are doing but they think playing this (or rather just hitting random buttons) is so hilarious!!! Do you ever sit back and just look at your little ones…and just think, “MAN…ONE DAY–I’m gonna miss this!!!” So…I guess I’ll take the hard days with the good–it really will all be worth it…and even treasured.

Hope you all have a great day…and a much better one that I had today!!!

XOXO!!!

Andrea

Oh my. I would have just cried on the spot arriving at the wrong location for an appointment under those circumstances. Just melted on the floor in a puddle. And the keys/outfit shopping…the greatest cruel irony. Hoping today and the days to come are kinder to you!

It may have started out as “one of those days” but I sure like the way your family “finishes” the day. Thanks for sharing.

I enjoy your “real” life. =) Love the dance photos – those are the best times that will continue to slip away all too fast. I am so glad that you are enjoying all the moments every time. Happy Day for tomorrow. =)
