African Family Fellowship night!!!

SOO…tonight was African Family Fellowship night at our house! We TRY our best to get together once a month when we can. AND although it is crazy for everyone to come probably–I will speak for the crew and say we really think it’s worth it! While we were in the adoption process–we looked at other areas of the country and felt like there were amazing pockets of families who do life together…who all were called to grow their families through the miracle of adoption. We’d look around here–and while we were sure there were other families being called like ours–we just didn’t know them yet!

While there are millions of orphans throughout the world–God does care for them in very amazing and unique ways…in our group alone there are about 4 orphan ministries represented where we are caring for orphans across the globe through 60Feet, 410Bridge, Wiphan, and Passion…just to name a few represented by our group! It’s amazing to meet with these others and hear what God is doing through their ministries–but it is ALSO incredible to DO LIFE TOGETHER and to get to raise our FAMILIES TOGETHER!!! Crazy to think not every family could come tonight when you see how God has multiplied our group and brought us all together…

What I love so much about this group of people–is how each of these families has an AMAZING story how God called them to adoption. Each story is so unique–and their journeys are full of MIRACLES…as are each of their children. Some in this group have been home for years–while others are asking questions and praying…and just beginning their journeys…feeling like God is asking them to grow their families and be mommies and daddies to little ones they have yet to meet and instead of carrying under their heart for 9 months…they will be asked to carry a little one IN their heart and jump through hoops and wait and persue a precious one…to raise them in His ways and to have another little one running through and adding JOY to their lives!!!

I LOVE the perspective of these families…the perspective they have about what REALLY matters in life. I love that we have all been changed for the good–we’ve been refined and we are STILL being refined as we die to ourselves to love our children in ways that bring them a deeper sense of their identity in Christ and belonging in this world–that they were created for a PURPOSE and to know how LOVED they are! These families SHARPEN me…and I am just SO thankful that I get to do life with so many of them!!!

Jesus loves the little children…all the children of the world!!!! (And here is Mr.Silas feelin’ some of that love…he LOVES to ham it up at picture time!)

SOOO thankful tonight for these children who are home and for the littles ones who will soon be home!!! AND so thankful for these families and for God’s sweet provision for us through one another’s love and support!

Hope you all have a GREAT Sunday!

XOXO!

Andrea

WOW! That is one BIG group! What a HUGE blessing to have so many like-minded families right in your area!

Kim - March 20, 2011 - 5:10 am

What a blessing to see how God grew this community after His own heart!

Sandi - March 20, 2011 - 3:11 pm

This just fills my sometimes depleted heart up! It is times like today when God brings yet another family into our lives who is in such desperate need that I just want to cry. The need sometimes seems so great & I wonder why, God, why? Then I read your blog (& His Word). Then the Ah-ha moment! Then I remember that with GOD all things truly ARE possible & no need is too great for HIM! These stories & seeing God work in so many lives to glorify him make it all worth it. He uses weakness for his glory. Love, love, love to see the amazing ways God brings people together to show that he really can move mountains! I soo needed this today!!!

audrey - March 20, 2011 - 7:39 pm

That is wonderful. We prayed for all of the families last night. I can’t wait to join in at the next one. And, Silas is such a hoot. So adorable. ๐Ÿ™‚

so fun! i LOVE african fellowship night!!
did not realize there were so many families there! LOVE IT!

Time to Get Your CUPCAKE on! (Sixty-Feet)…and Little Bo Peep

Spring is in the air–and there is nothing more fun than getting the kids out and doing something as a family…AND with friends!!! Do you ever think, “Gosh–I want to do SOMETHING for the sake of orphans…but I’m not sure what WE could do?!”

Well, here is an AMAAAZZIIIIINNNG (AMAZING!) opportunity!!!

Children (young and old;) throughout the country will be joining efforts through CUPCAKES on April 16, 2011. Yes, you heard that RIGHT…through CUPCAKES. Last year, 60Feet (an AMAZING new ministry in Uganda–if you don’t know about 60Feet then you MUST…and after you visit their website HERE–come back here and see how you can join the cupcake force with us on April 16th!)

Soooo…these kiddos decided to sell cupcakes last year to go toward SixtyFeet kids–and they raised more money than they ever DREAMED. THIS year–they are giving other kiddos THROUGHOUT the country the invitation and challenge to join them!

You can read about how to join this effort and host a sale of your own on April 16 by going HERE. SERIOUSLY–I can’t think of a better way to involve kids in making an impact–something FUN and practical that THEY can do…and an incredible way to raise awareness at the same time!!!

NOW…whether you host a sale or NOT–you can help by purchasing one of the CUPCAKE tees (there’s one for all!) And there’s also SixtyFeet tees–that you can purchase to help raise awareness too–with of course all proceeds going toward the ministry! AND if you are hosting a tee–HOW FUN would it be to have your little busy bees all in THIS gear!!!

They have ADORABLE kids shirts with Africa and a cupcake over Uganda! LOOOVE this. They have these in both blue and pink!

They have YUMMY applique shirts for the girlie girls…of course these would be cute for birthday parties and such too…and all proceeds toward an amazing ministry!

AND of course if you are already going ALL out your mommy team might as well gear up TOO in these…

Last put not least–the FIRST SixtyFeet tee…and you can have the pleasure of telling others what SixtyFeet is all about when strangers ask! LOVE this…

You can purchase the T-shirts HERE!

We just love this ministry and can’t say enough about the team of folks that God has brought together to run it. I LOVE that they all live in my city–and we get to do life together. SO thankful for them…and so excited to share them with you!!! OKAY–so if you are going to host a sale–I would LOOOVE to know! So who’s in?!

A little bit from home…

A few things you must know…I discovered this morning that the leprechaun traps my kids set up did not work. P and L were both very sad this morning to run outside and see them empty. P, however, was certain that they played on his slide (and I was certain P’s dad wouldn’t be excited when he saw what P tore off the house to use AS a slide for a leprechaun)…

We had lots of green for dinner on St.Patty’s day…including green whoopie pies for dessert…

AND then…this morning (just after mourning empty leprechaun traps) we dressed Loo up like Little Bo Peep for her nursery rhyme debute…

We were so proud of her performance (I’ll have to upload that later!) and my how this girl adores her daddy…and how proud we were of her!

AND special thanks from Frank to the mom who brought donuts to the performance for all to eat. You made a very happy audience member…

That’s all folks! Hope you all have a GREAT weekend!!! We’ve got a big, fun one ahead–so I’m sure there will be lots of pictures to follow on Sunday! NOW…go mark your calendars for April 16th and get geared up for fun cupcake sales ALL over the country!!! Frank is sure to be excited about this one!

XOXO!

Baseball, Daddy/Daughter Date…and Organized Simplicity!

BASEBALL

One of my FAVORITE seasons has begun!!! The one that starts with a B!!! BASEBALL SEASON! I just love it!!! And this past Saturday was P’s first game of the season! He is 6 years old, and they skip t-ball in this particular league and only pull the tee out if you miss the ball 5 times. No sense in learning on a tee and then having to UNlearn it…so they just DIVE right in–and they DO AMAZING with it! Parker got 3 hits and most of all–HE HAD FUN!!!

He plays in the pitcher position so he has to be on his toes and ready to catch!!!

His coaches take their roles QUITE seriously…especially the short one–Frank seriously thinks he is one of the coaches!

DADDY DAUGHTER DATE

While Laney plays in sand–and two of Parker’s biggest fans cheer him on!!

This was ITY’s FIRST baseball game EVER!!! Ok…we had to work on a wave for the camera…

THEN–after all the boy stuff–it was TIME for the princess to go on her date. She has been talking about this for weeks and trying to decide what to wear…

Parker totally understood his date with momma is NEXT. BUT–the babies DID NOT. They LOOOOVE having daddy on the weekends–and when they saw ONLY LANEY was going…THIS WAS THE REACTION…

SOOO…momma can’t handle big alligator tears. Yes, of course I could come in and tell them, “Now darlins–it’s the way the world works! She gets her turn–and you boys have to wait yours.” ORRRR. I could throw clothes on everyone and tell them we are going for milkshakes and burgers at Steak-n-Shake with momma! AND…all of the sudden…you get THIS…And that’s how we rolled…and everyone was happy. We went through the drive-thru and came home for picnic!

ORGANIZED SIMPLICITY

THEN I survived all week flying solo (praise the Lord Rico Suave just got home!!! SO thankful to have my helper again!!!) In our crazy this week–I have been reading Organized Simplicity and applying the purging principles. My kids may want to admit me for walking around my house picking up things as I ask, “Is this beautiful to me? Is this beautiful to us?”

Let me tell you this–if you REALLY want to SIMPLIFY–do not ask the Organized Simplicity principle question “Is this beautiful to us?” around your pre-schoolers. “Oh YES! That is beautiful too. You can’t give that away momma!” The purging has been most productive during nap time to say the least. GoodWill is about to rack up on what we don’t think is beautiful to us:)

And while I ABSOLUTELY think the portraits of my little ones are forever beautiful–we were missing portraits with our newest…SO it was time to update. I decided to go with COLOR instead of the black and white…and instead of horizontal I changed the update to vertical.

{BEFORE – Black and White portraits}…

{AFTER – Color portraits}

Special thank you to my dear friend Shannon Holden for the 6 center images…thank you for capturing our family’s love for one another! You can check out Shannon’s photography HERE.

Sooo…watch cha think?? Does color give it a totally different look? I think most stick with black and white for wall groupings–but I think color is kinda fun! Don’t you??

THEN…I proceded to do “Is this beautiful to me?” to the nicknacks on the shelves…and I think bookcases can be a headache–but I tweaked a bit and think I’m done:)

One way to take away from bear/negative space is to add a frame in the base/wall of a bookcase. And some times–you have to keep older portraits up and never replace the ones that forever melt your heart (can you believe it’s Parker in these pictures? It goes by so fast!)

I love little reminders of His provision–and for me…it’s always been symbolized through birds (you know some of my crazy ‘bird’ stories!). Love using different things for bookends…

AND I’m a LITTLE SLOW I know–it’s MARCH and I JUST took the manger scene off our mantel. YES…it’s TRUE:). And I added something that says ‘Spring’…’new life’…to me:)

LAST but not least–I have to tell you I used to put up “pretty pictures”…but these days–I am putting up more pictures that just melt my heart OR MAKE MY SMILE! Now…if you are a Frank fan;) you’ll love this. Frank makes this “OH MY GOODNESS!” face when he sees something really amazing. SOO…It is “HIS” face–and I LOVE that I have it in this picture. He spotted Uncle Buck’s HUGE tractor tire–and thought it was AMAZING. He was saying “LOOOOOOOK! TRA-TER!” I even got it enlarged…so I could see it…on the wall–like EVERY day:)

TO COME…

While I was PURGING I ran across some more CRAZY pictures from back in the DAY–and I think I’ve GOT to take the next couple weeks and shamelessly share some of those with you! On a serious note–there are some PRETTY incredible things to share from those days–and they make a really amazing impact on the NOW for us. SO…I’m going to be scanning away and sharing some of those in the days ahead. Hope you all have a great week!!!!

XOXO,

Andrea

Hey!, I was SO excited to see your name on this the other day. ๐Ÿ™‚ We’re “planning” to come early so I can attend this special afternoon event. Would love to connect with you. Blessings!, Shelly

Hey there!! I have followed your blog via Kristi Johnson for a long time…I comment from time to time, but mostly just love reading your posts. I have a heart for the orphan…I am not sure if that will lead my husband and I to adoption or if we will just continue to donate to the cause–but I pray that all works out how HE has planned. But today–your post sparked something in my brain…you are coming to Louisville, KY!! That is where I live and we attend Southeast Christian Church!! How very cool—such a very small world. I am sure you already have a room, etc–but know if you need anything at all there are friendly faces in the area–also Kristi’s little sister, Karson, (my college roommate) also lives here now too!!

Lara - March 16, 2011 - 10:04 am

Ohhhhhh I wish I was going!! I’ll either be in Africa or broke from saving to go to Africa.

Going Green (Get your St.Paddy’s on…)

It’s time for some SPRING cleaning…so I asked my Facebook friends for organization tips…which led me to the book store buying the book Organized Simplicity. I’m following her guide to de-cluttering, and I’m starting with the family room. Really–you do NOT want to hear details or see pictures! It’s a mess:). SOOO…I thought I’d help you guys GO GREEN in another way with your kiddos! St.Patrick’s Day is just a FEW days away!!!

SOOOO…here’s a few ideas I did last year that might give you all some time to get some of this green on yourselves!!! Here’s my 2 cents on GOING GREEN…

Make your kids a fun POT OF GOLD…

Our “pot of gold” made from limes…a dash of sugar and whipped topping inside…and then lemon jello…IMG_2049

This is super simple. Just cut open your lime–cleaning it out a bit. Add a little sugar, whipped topping (trust me on this), and then carefully cut tiny squares of lemon cut jello.

With the left over jello, you can make small cups of “gold” for snack time later!
IMG_2076

GREEN drinks!

Lime-aide…All. Day. Long…YUM…IMG_2045

Ok…I thought this was gross…but they thought this was fun today…green milkIMG_2106

And the milk and lime-aide will be perfect with this yummy veggie at dinner time–our FAVORITE here…brussel sprouts! Our kids LOVE these…but you HAVE to cook ’em like this for our to gobble them up!IMG_2099

Not a brussel sprout fan? Well, you just need to try this! Our kids BEG for them. We learned a trick while in New York visiting a chef with the Food Network. You have to slice them in half, sautee in olive oil (ONLY)…NO salt, pepper or flavoring! And you must sautee in a iron skillet. Sautee in olive oil for 4-5 mintues until lightly browned on edges—and then stick in oven in iron skillet at 350 degrees for 5 more mintues stirring occasionally. TRUST ME ON THIS! We serve these to dinner guests ALL the time and they try to make themselves and call us for instructions! It’s THAT easy. But you have to do it just like that…and they are like candy! YUM!IMG_2092
Just to vouch for these, two of my dearest friends Jett and Kelly both told me that hated brussel sprouts. I made them try them this way…and they LOVE THEM now!

AND…just to make you laugh–LAST YEAR–I was in charge of snacks for my son’s kindergarden class. I brought in everything green…the lime cups of gold, celery, limeaide, green peppers with dip…snap-peas…I was having so much fun and sent in just about everything I could think of! I spotted Wasibi Peas and sent them in but I NEVER had tasted them before and didn’t know how HOT they were. Unfortunately, my son’s teacher had never tasted them either. IMAGINE the response in a kindergarden class when a bunch of little 5 year olds popped THESE in their mouths…NOT good! Mom of the Year Award…right;)?!

Alright–so don’t forget to get your green on for St.Patrick’s Day on March 17th!!!

Hope you all have a wonderful week!

Thanks for the brussell sprout recipe! Do you have to use fresh or will frozen work?

Looove all the tips! We don’t have our little one yet…but maybe I will surprise my hubby with some fun ๐Ÿ˜‰

hahahah… that is hilarious about the Wasabi peas! ๐Ÿ™‚ Love your tips. I looked everywhere for gold coins last year that the kids could wake up to that the “leprachauns left”… and I was way too late! So this year I’m on the ball with those, but had not thought of the jello! ๐Ÿ™‚ And YES, we want to see before and after shots of your house so you can help the rest of us with kiddie stuff everywhere to get organized! I am so glad you posted that question on FB because now I’m getting her blog updates and have her book on my Amazon list to buy later. Thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚
