China… and a little of this and that

To say my heart has been on a roller coaster these last few weeks is an understatement. So much revealed…so many things to pray about–and ultimately…Richard and I feel the Lord directing us in the direction He led us to 6 months ago. China. It’s hard for this momma to discern exactly what we are supposed to do some times–especially after holding little ones who are orphans in across the world just a few weeks ago. The Lord knows my heart–and this isn’t the first time I have told Him, “What you want Lord, just show me and we will do it.”

Several months ago we were praying about an AMAZING special needs girl who our hearts deeply wanted to say, “yes” to. This roller coaster with Zambia–for now anyway–was a bit easier as I prayed if she was ours–that she would simply be adoptable. And she is not. (Right now) But months ago–as we were challenged to pray about bringing home a little girl who we still pray for (and truthfully our hearts haven’t closed the door to), I feel we were able to learn more about ourselves and how to discern if it may be His will for our family.

We took off to have some time of family couseling. It helped the counselor already knew mine and Rico’s personality–but the bottom line and surprising thing we realized was when she said this: The Lord has changed your hearts. Now you have a heart like His. You have the spirit of adoption within you–and from what I see in both of you…where an orphan is concerned, you will always say, “Yes.”

I sat there having a little revelation. I have never been in a position thus far to say NO because our last adoption we were on a waitlist because that was how the Ethiopia program worked with our agency. BUT…with the China Waiting Child / Special Needs Program, there are more than 2,500 children ALREADY waiting…and to think we would always say yes–well, is impossible.

SO, we love this little one already…but we just aren’t sure.

Have you been praying for her consistently? Of course you love her.

Then where does that leave us?

To say no.

WHAT?! That’s really not what I wanted to hear. But…we definitely don’t feel a YES, YES, YES either…

Then say no. And see if the Lord brings her back to you again. See if you CAN say no to this precious one. Advocate for her–and see how the Lord moves in your heart.

We didn’t say no because we “couldn’t”…because we could–and so much of us wanted to. But ultimately–we did not have peace and joy to say yes at the time. I am thankful we took several days to pray–and as the weeks have passed, I have cooresponded with different moms across the U.S. who are considering bringing home this little girl. (She is amazing…and we are still praying for her.)

Hearing the news that the sweet little one in Zambia is “unadoptable” broke my heart…and my first instint was to fight for her…but for now we are to remain in the program He started us in…full of unknowns…full of paperwork…and full of new everything for us…BUT where our little girl I know must be.

So, our journey continues–once again China bound. We’ll peak at the waiting child list as the Lord prompts us to…so I guess you just never know when we’ll have a little girl to announce:). My heart is excited…it is joyful…and I even can’t wait to go see precious Memory again next time I’m in Zambia to tell her how loved she is. And if the Lord wants to bring her or precious “J” in China back to us in some way some day…then we’ll open that door when we get to it. The real challenge is HEARING through the new HEART…having the spirit of adoption and WANTING to say YES and care for each one…but knowing that some times God has you just right where you are because…because well–the ones in your care might just need you a little bit more right now. HE is enough and will care for our daughter until He reveals her to us and we bring her home. And after that…He will still be enough.

Thank you for praying for us on this journey…and I really can’t wait to see what our family looks like a year from now!!!

A little weekend shout out…

1. Check out this AMAZING fundraiser to help bring home my friend Lara’s sweet little boy from Uganda: A ROCKIN Camera and Lens if you win!!! BUT better than winning–you get to help bring home an amazing little boy!!! Please keep this family in your prayers as they get closer to travel and court!

2. This is a MUST check out: Adoption Families for Famine Relief A group of adoption families put together a fund and ways to offer help and relief to the Horn of Africa during this terrible famine they are facing. This is where our sweet son is from, and this is just an awful, terrible time for so many…currently 800,000 children may die. Will you consider doing a family fast–and donating the money you would have spent on a night out to one of the organizations on this website for the sake of the children in this famine? Our precious son weighed under 6 pounds at 6 months–and if it were not for relief organizations coming in and training the orphanage…OH my heart.

They even have some really cool items you can purchase for a suggested donation. My kids would LOVE these matching discs…

3. For those of you who like to dress for a cause (“Change the World with What You Wear” is one of my mottos:)…consider helping the Wayman family fundraise to bring home their little one home from Africa. They have a sweet tee and you can purchase it here in their ETSY shop: Wayman Family Shop

I’ve been lurking for a while, and have been enjoying your blog very much! Thank you for sharing your journey. I do think there are times when we want to say “yes,” but also hear God saying “wait.” We have been in two different adoption programs, considered a third, and also looked into foster care. Each time, somehow the door was closed. While I have longed for more children and have a heart for orphans, I am trusting that this just isn’t the time, that our son, as you put it, needs us a little bit more right now. In the meantime, I am trying to keep an open heart and an open ear to what God might have in store. It is sometimes frustrating, not knowing what the future will look like, but I am trying to trust. ๐Ÿ™‚ Praying that the Lord continues to soften and mold our hearts, and to lead our families to the children he has chosen to put in our care.

I’ll be praying for you friend! It’s such a long hard road, but the end result is nothing short of miraculous (you know this already)… We fell in love with a little boy named Jacob while in Uganda 2 summers ago. I keep in touch with an “auntie” that works at his orphanage & it SO breaks my heart that he is still there! He was not adoptable & now he is, a few Ugandan families are apparently interested in adopting him, but nothing final yet. So there he sits, 3 years old STILL with no family and we had it in our hearts that he was ours. SO heartbreaking!! Now that adoption is in our hearts, it will be there forever. I was at a birthday party a few weeks ago & there was a foster mother there with her newest baby girl & the first thing I asked was, “Is she adoptable?” Bless you and your family!!!

Love your heart Andrea! So excited to see where the Lord leads your family…and especially WHO he leads your family to. I stand expectant with you for all that He will unfold in the days ahead…

Love your heart for orphans and adoption, Andrea! Can’t wait to see who HE adds to your family!!!

Oh my goodness I’m rolling in my own tears right now. I cannot begin to tell you how much I needed to read this post! I show my husband images… faces on the screen nightly. I want to bring them home…I would gladly say yes to ALL of them. But God has taught me so much these past couple of months about being STILL… listening to where He is calling us [US], our family! Its hard… its VERY hard… but I trust Him! Thank you for sharing… I needed to hear this this morning!

Elle J - August 12, 2011 - 11:45 am

I long for some of these answers myself – the “why” about closed doors. The “why” to different callings. Learning to see that we are all the body of Christ, each with a direction that He has for each of us. Accepting closed doors is hard – continuing to learn to keep listening and to be still, willing and ready to say Yes. Loved this post.

Kristi - August 12, 2011 - 4:21 pm

Andrea, A friend sent me here and I am so glad. We are going through a similar adoption decision right now. I can’t tell you how comforting to find someone who has traveled this same road. Please come by for a visit sometime! I’d love it if you said hello!

Blessings,
Kristi

He is faithful…

Turn off the music up top…and listen to this.

Close your eyes…thinking of where you are right now–where you have been–where He has brought you…and let this song minister to your heart.

I’m so excited about the upcoming “>Created for Care Adoption Mom Retreat. I’m thrilled to once again have Susan Hillis joining us. Love this entry she just wrote for Hope at Home: We Hope in You at Home

Susan and Beth will also be speaking at the Hope for Home Conference coming up soon on September 23-24th. You can register HERE. Richard and I will also be there sharing in a breakout session. We would LOVE to see you there!!!

Amazing song! Thanks so much for sharing! God is so faithful!

Can you tell us when registration is for the Created for Care retreat?!

Beth - August 11, 2011 - 5:27 pm

I know! This song just kills me every time I listen to it. I can’t listen without crying. I think of myself and how true it is that He has never left me alone. And then I think of who He has been to my children. I emailed the link to each of them– I am convinced that this song/truth can bring healing to their past as they accept it for themselves. So glad you are sharing it! I’m thinking we need to use it at Hope at Home 2011 and since my husband is one of the worship leaders I’m pretty sure I can make it happen! Thanks for sharing Hope at Home 2011 Andrea! It’s going to a great time and I’m so glad you and Richard will be teaming up with us. God is good!

Love the song, and the Created for Care retreat sounds amazing. We haven’t brought our baby home yet, just barely on the waitlist. Is the retreat for mamas who already have their children home? No worries if it is, just thought I’d check and start planning early if it was open to us waiting mamas as well.
Love,
Rory

Amazing song…. I have followed your blog for a little while now and love your heart for the orphan… my heart also is being stretched by the Lord more each day. We have adopted 3 children through foster care after the Lord called us to move here from the UK and now He is calling us to Uganda to adopt 2 more… I know I will be forever changed when my feet hit Ugandan soil… I am expecting Him to break my heart and know from what He has shown us so far that these adoptions are just the beginning of something much bigger, we await to see and step out in faith knowing that He goes before us… Thankyou sooo much for this blog and how much it echoes my hearts cry….

The Chappell family…bringing two more home

Every now and again…I run across a family’s blog that has me gobbling up every word of their most-amazing story. (Alright, who am I kidding? We all know the in the adoption network you can stumble upon amazing, God stories every day!) But this family–has a story…that is written just so sacred and beautifully.

The Chappell started their journey to parenthood a handful of years ago. When they were pregnant with their first son, Asher, they discovered he had a birth defect…and as things would play out…when he was born 3 years ago (the same year as my Frankie baby)–he breathed on his own for a bit–and then he went to be with Jesus. Amongst the tears–the Lord opened up the door for adoption…and just 4 months later–their precious, beautiful, Zoe entered their hearts and homes. Just a little over 10 months later…their family amazingly grew once again–through their care of Jack. And with his birthparents unable to care for him, he is now an official Chappell as of last month.

And guess what??? Yet again–their family grows through adoption!!!

They will be leaving for the DRC in September or October to bring home 2 more precious children–a son (Ezra) who is 9 months old and little princess Evie who is just 6 weeks old. Now…if you do the math–that’s 4 kids 2 and under:)!!! Some might call the Chappells CRAZY–but I call it absolutely amazing…and super fun. (My prayers will be with you Casey! Seriously–I am so excited for how God is growing your family through adoption. While I know you would have never imagined this 3 short years ago…holding your precious Asher…but God does make all things beautiful in His time. And I am challenged by your following Him to grow your family no matter what. You and your hubby rock.)

The Chappells are doing a super cool fundraiser to go toward their adoption to bring home these two bundles of joy. And IF you love photography–oh my…this is THE most rockin’ photography basket EVA!

When you make a donation toward their adoption you get entered in a drawing to win A WHOLE LOT OF STUFF (camera bag, BHPhoto gift certificate, Adobe Lightroom 3, actions for photographers, backdrops…just about ANYTHING any photographer would love to have!) SOOO…please share this with your photography loving friends!!! AND for every $5 increment donation…you are entered again and again into the drawing!!! If you want to donate but you don’t like photography–THEN just gift this to a photography loving person you know (HINT, HINT!!! LOL!) SERIOUSLY…if you don’t love photography but win–this would have your Christmas shopping knocked out for all your photography loving friends and family!!!

Ok…so you can enter and read their amazing story HERE.

Can’t help but think there is the most beautiful angel in heaven smiling down watching these babies come home to momma and daddy. I am quite sure they are looked after…and there will be much rejoicing in heaven as they fly them home!!! Thank you Casey for sharing your family’s beautiful life. And may the Lord bless your family as you grow again. What a beautiful picture of living for the Kingdom!!!

what an amazing story!!!!!! I am tears… our first pregnancy, first son, first baby to go to heaven is also named Asher! wow

Happy Birthday Isaac!!!

What a sweet day celebrating our baby boy! He’s not so much baby any more…he is officially TWO!!!! We had a little bug birthday and kept things super simple with family and two of his little Ethiopia friends:). Here is the birthday boy in his grasshoper jonjon (Rico Suave said no more jonjons now that he is two…)

Here’s his birthday cake…

I told the sweet people at the Cake Shoppe to just put any ole critter on it. I’m really not sure what that critter is. It could be a lizard, iquana or tadpole with legs approaching the metamorph stage (thought we’d have an early homeschool lesson there I guess;). We let the kids decide what they thought it was…the votes were inconclusive…I’m sure he is a tadpole with legs though.

Also–do you notice anything odd about the candles on the cake?? OK…so last minute–realized I had no birthday candles. I grabbed two tealight candles and lit those suckers. SOOO…technically we could have had the candles lit for 60 minutes:). Nice.

Happy birthday Isaac!!! We are so blessed to be your parents…we love you so, so much. Today we thank God for another year with you!!!

our crazy

Soooo…we survived Friday’s fun with a big family crew over at our house. The most favorite thing…was Aunt Lesa’s little dog. Laney and Frank have put in their requests for a little dog just like this–but I assured them that another puppy would hurt Rosie’s feelings:). I’m sure of it…one dog is plenty for the Young family:)

THEN…on Saturday, we got up really early and joined my dear friend Christy Elphick and her crew at the water park at Lake Lanier. April–the AMAZING event planner at Lake Lanier Legacy Lodge–sent our families tickets for reconnecting with them after Africa! How precious is that?! We work with April planning Created for Care retreats for adoption moms–and we are gearing up now for the next one! April followed our Africa trip–and she has been such an encouragement to us since we first met he! Thank you April! WE had SO much fun that we don’t have ONE picture to prove it!
BUT there was a milestone. Our Loo–who is usually just like her momma and not so adventureous when it comes to fast slides–really got brave today. She even took her momma down on a few;). It was a great day bonding and connecting as a family and with dear friends! THANK YOU!!!!

THEN…I spent my afternoon editing and putting together pictures for a team picture swap we were having. Oh…how does it all mix together Lord? From one emotion to the NEXT. I sat behind my computer staring at the screen and asking Richard, “Can we just move there?” He said of course. You never know with us do you;) Oh these eyes…

THEN…I ran across a few sponsored kids! It is soooo fun seeing how EXCITED the sponsored kids got when they opened their letters. Their sponsors are like family to them and they just treasure EVERY picture and letter they receive!!! Here is a picture of my friend’s Nina’s sponsored sweetie holding a picture of Nina’s grandbabies (the little boy is one of Parker’s VBFFs:)…it melted my heart to see her holding this picture of kids that are also dear to me…

Our good friends the Dugger family sponsor two sweet boys. Tammy–here is one of your sweeties…

Mary Ellen Ponder…here is your sweet one writing you back…

Here’s he sweet one my parents sponsor…so I guess this makes us SISTERS!

Alright–so it may take me a few weeks to FULLY share Africa. BUT I think it will always take me a LIFETIME to process. I have to say…it can be soooo hard coming back to the States to process. BUT one thing that helps me most–are my kids. I’m thankful we began our love affair with Africa and its children when our oldest were just babies. It has kept us real–and our children thankful for the little things in life. Just last week as I was sitting outside watching them play, I had to laugh. Africa messes you up–in a good way. Coming home an seeing “stuff” can always be especially hard. And I can always count on my kids to lighten my heart and keep me laughing…

I always said I never wanted to spend money on a battery operated car for MY KIDS. I mean…seriously, how redonkulous. Kids starving in the world–and my kids have a miniature car that actually has a battery to take them around the yard? I mean…don’t get offended if you have one–by all means invite my kids over to play on it;). This momma, however, can’t justify us personally buying one. A few years ago, my mom found a JohnDeer one at a yard sale for $50 and gave it to Parker for his birthday. NOW that was a fun deal while it worked. But those batteries? Man…they break the bank–so when the battery died…my kids got to push it:).

I had to laugh when our across the street neighbor said he wanted to give us his old daughter’s jeep. Mind you it came with no battery. AND since those batteries cost $75…we are now collecting these things for exercise use in our garage;). NOW–THESE videos just go to show you why just MAYBE our kids don’t need all the things we think or THEY think they need. Honestly, I think my kids have way more fun with a batteryless jeep…and it’s way better exercise!!!! AND it was free:) How much fun is this… (if your kids have these and the battery breaks…give it a few weeks, show them this video of my kids and tell them this is even BETTER than a battery!)

Not only is our jeep FREE…AND low cost b/c it requires no battery replacements…and because we can’t charge it–we don’t have to remember to charge it…it also has a very special feature that Parker added to it with one of our picnic blankets which he stores in the “trunk”. These kids crack me up! Just want you need for a rainy day…right!?

Love how my kids help me transition back…and I’m so thankful how they roll with things and really just are happy playing with sticks:) LOVE you kiddos!!!

Now, tomorrow is Isaac’s 2nd birthday. I am soooo thankful to celebrate another year with our sweet one!!! AND guess who popped over for dinner tonight??? It was such a treat to have the sweet friend who actually inspired our adoption journey to begin with over tonight for fellowship. We love the Johnson family–and we are so thankful for their friendship! Crazy to think we’ve been friends now for 2 years…and continue to support one another on our adoption journeys! SO…Frank thought he’d attempt to take Lucy Lane out for a little date but of course the jeep doesn’t go any where…

As you can see Frank found a binky that the Binky Fairy failed to find…and he is readdicted. I tried to tell him that girls don’t go for boy with binkies. Move over Frankie baby with your blue binkie…you see who got the date in the end…

Here are the 3 Ethiopian cuties after dinner. Sweet Wes continues to recover well from his surgery–and Auntie Andrea only almost had a million heart attacks fretting over him possibly tripping and falling under my roof. Just one more week and they don’t have to be quite as careful with falls–but oh my…I was nervous! He is getting bigger and better every day! AND Lucy Lane and Isaac–well, these two are just two healthy messes! (so thankful!)

In other Young news–you should know that the Youngs keep things until they seriously work no more. I had to snag this pic of Rich doing his weekly ice maker de-freeze. As long as he does this, we get the privilege of having ICE! Hilarious right!!! BUT no need to get a new frig until our old one breaks. AND seeing Rico Suave do this just makes me laugh. Keepin’ it real people…

Last but not least…a word from our dishwasher:

Hope you all have a GREAT Sunday!!! Happy 2nd birthday to our Isaac Temesgen!!! He is crazy about bugs right now…so a little bug party with family tomorrow night for sure! Today is the day the Lord has made–let us rejoice and be glad in it!

Love the videos with the jeep. We had a friend offer to give us her son’s old jeep, but I decided against it, since I knew I would never want to spend the money on a new battery. Now, I am regretting my decision. I guess you don’t need a battery after all!
