The next Lionel Messi {Frankie baby’s ball control} & Family Rules Art

You gotta love our Frankie baby. You rarely get a smile out of him, but you can get anything out of him with a donut. He’s 2 going on 10–and he seriously thinks he can hang with Parker’s soccer team. And…he might be right.

Frankie baby hasn’t missed a practice this year–in his 2 year old soccer career;). He even went to most of them last Fall when he was just one. He is a baller…and he loves the game. Any game. I always have my camera at the Saturday games…but he doesn’t get to play at those of course (YET!) I told myself that I wasn’t going to let this season end though without capturing his determination, hard work, ball control and agility;) at the weekly practice. I’m convinced he’s the next Lionel Messi…and if you don’t know who that is–just be glad you know Frankie baby…because he’s going places people;).

This boy will practice ball control in the backyard for HOURS. Here’s Frankie baby at practice this week (now he LOVES baseball too…and the Braves gave him this jersey for free at one of their games when Frankie baby ran the bases…so he insists on wearing it to every practice. It’s his game shirt:)

I love how focused he is when he practices…

He seriously thinks he is 7 years old too…just like all the other kids on the team!

And Rico Suave challenges him just like the other kids–and he loves the challenge…

Love watching him walk in his daddy’s footsteps…and can’t wait to cheer this boy on when he really is old enough to play! If you ask him though, he’ll tell ya “I AM on da team mommy. I AM!”

Family Rules Art…

My sister April’s birthday was on Sunday–and I LOVE to give personal, meaningful gifts rather than another nick back thingamajigger. I decided to call my nieces on the phone and interview them what THEY think the family rules should be in their home. THEN…I put them together like this…

I painted the edges to give it a little more rustic look when I was all done…

Here’s the super easy “how to”

1. Buy 13-15 of coordinating/fun scrapbooking papers (8×10 will do…I bought the 12×12 because I thought I’d make our family one too), a wrapped canvas (this is done on a 16×20 canvas–but you could do any size of course), Modge Podge (+sponge brush) AND black acrylic paint pen (or any paint pen will do!)

2. Cut 1.5-2 inches scrap book paper (I just eyeballed mine to probably 1.5) You can leave the edges straight–but I wanted mine to be rustic and random…so I burned the edges.

3. Using your sponge brush (or paint brush) put on first layer of scrapbook paper by putting Modge Podge on the canvas where the first strip will go. I didn’t burn the FIRST strip because it was my starting base. Then each strip went just slightly over the one just before it. (It’s helpful to have a dry rag or paper towels to rub the strip down. It’s okay if it creases–I always tell my kids that things are more beautiful the messier they get…they have character that way:).

4. After all your strips are on–go back and carefully press down any pieces of paper that are folding or sticking up. THEN–go over the entire canvas with a thin layer of Modge Podge. Let dry.

5. Look online for font inspiration–and go to town writing your family rules. (It’s way more fun to interview kiddos for these! I snuck a few in that I found online that I liked, but for the most part these were the rules my nieces gave me:)

6. Let paint pen writing dry. If you want to paint the edges you can do that now. You can use any kind of paint. I actually used what we already had here which was just some washable brown kids paint. It doesn’t matter what you use as long as you go ver the finished project at the end with more Modge Podge to protect it. I used another cheap sponge brush (2 came in a pack for 99 cents!) to paint the edges brown. I made the edges messes to give it an older rustic look too. After that dried…another thin layer of Modge Podge and ALL DONE.

And I wish you could have seen my sister’s face when she got this sweet gift!!! Reading something your kids helped your sister create…WAY better than just another thingamajigger…don’t ya think?!

Hope you all have a great Tuesday!! BY THE WAY…Kristin is SOOOO excited to hear the funds have been raised for Margret’s to have surgery in Ndola, Africa!!! She’s gone to Lusaka now to get business done but she’ll be back on Wednesday and hopefully we’ll hear some surgery dates soon!!!!! I’ll keep y’all posted!

XOXO!!!

Hilarious! The jersey just makes it that much cuter! I love your idea for the rules. If you can get crafty with 4 littles then I’m thinking there’s hope for me to paint a nativity scene for my yard before Christmas! Thank you for the inspiration!

Kristy D - October 27, 2011 - 3:51 pm

That is one of the neatest gift I’ve ever seen…makes me want to get started on one right away for my sisters Christmas presents. Thanks for sharing!

Lisa Cho - October 29, 2011 - 2:42 am

Not been here for a while, so it was nice to catch up on things in your family. What a LOVELY idea for a present for your sister and a family heirloom to boot!

Win a FREE registration fee to the JANUARY Created for Care retreat!

A little shout out for the Cookman crew!

Just before Created for Care registration opened up–the Cookman family contacted me to see if they could purchase TWO spots to the Created for Care retreat. I told her she could purchase how ever many she wanted as long as she bought them before the retreat sold out. SO…she was one of the many to stay up until midnight to be sure she could buy more than one ticket! The Cookman family wants to bless a family with a spot at the Janaury retreat–AND they are doing a fundraiser on their blog. No purchase is necessary to enter the retreat registration give-away–all you have to do is leave a comment on their family’s blog entry!!!

VISIT THE COOKMAN FAMILY BLOG HERE!

They have a couple of really fun things you can purchase to help them with their adoption fundraiser—so check out their blog to see the fun! I really want to buy my kids “I’m Going to Change the World” tees from Ordinary Hero–Ordinary Hero is giving the Cookmans 40% of sales to their adoption agency to go toward their adoption. You can read details on their blog. How cute are these tees???!!!

I’m going to head on over to Ordinary Hero and get some of these for Christmas gifts!!! How fun would it be for ALL of your gifts this year to benefit things like this!!?? They are also partnering with a shop that sells adorable placemats. Read instructions on their blog how to purchase. How cute are these…

Or this one…

They have some other things up to…so go check out the Cookman Family HERE!

AND…a quick update on the Young’s…

I’ve had several folks ask where in the world are we with OUR adoption??!! We are getting there!!! We should have our home study written up in the next couple of weeks and we’ll send it off to Immigration once it’s written!! On SUNDAY (yesterday) we had the privilege of having lunch with the sweet lady from China who will actually match us with our daughter!!! She was in country just last week and some of this week–and we are so thankful for the opportunity to have met her! I’m hoping we will be matched by Christmas…or at least by the first Created for Care retreat at the end of January so I can share my daughter’s picture with everyone:). Richard and I are getting really EXCITED to be nearing the end of the paper chase (it only took 6 months this time…HA! It just took 4 weeks for our Ethiopian adoption!)

I’ll let y’all know as SOON as we are set and officially waiting on a referral so y’all can all hold your breath with us!! We have wider perimeters this time ’round…and our agency told us our wait should be short…so that is another reason we’ve moseyed through the process this time–cause if you were a fly on the wall in our house on any given day…you’d see CRAZY!!! That’s the way we roll:)

Hope you all have a GREAT week!!!

XOXO!

Are you SERIOUS?!?! Andrea! I had ZERO idea you were gonna do an entire POST on this…on us. I wouldn’t have expected more than just a little line at the end of one of yours just so people know and don’t miss out on the giveaway. I never in my wildest dreams imagined THIS. The response has been so wonderful! I’m still going to send you an email, but I just had to say THANK YOU publicly. And I so HOPE you have a picture of your girl by January because then I’ll get to see her face AND you in person! Thank you for blessing us daily in so many ways.
Love,
Rory

I tried to donate but it refused my (Australian) credit card. Do you only accept US credit cards?
Thanks,

Ok, so it’s 2am and I just couldn’t sleep because this little one has been so heavily on my heart. I have been praying day & night for God to surprise everyone who thinks that there may be no hope in this situation by providing everything she needs for surgery. Just happened to check your blog & surprise, once again God makes the impossible possible!!! Praying for amazing surgeons and a miraculous recovery! God is going to use this little one to speak to the hearts of many!

WOW! WOW! WOW! I haven’t done any blog-reading or much Facebooking in the past week or so so totally missed this project! Margret has been on my heart for months. Praising God for a diagnosis and funding for surgery! Praying for wise doctors, complete healing, and JOY and HOPE for precious Margret.

half way there!!! {and a few fun pictures from our day}

We are hoping to raise $2,000 for Margret’s surgery by next week–and just after posting the need yesterday…we are HALF WAY THERE! (Yes!!! Can you believe it??!!! $1,000 has been raised in ONE night!) Sooooo exciting! One of my Zambia trip teammates just sent me this precious picture of Margret. She is just so precious…and I can’t wait for her to hear she is going to finally get treatment!

Isn’t she beautiful??!! And although her foot can’t fit in a soccer shoe–she was DETERMINED to play soccer with the other children while we were there so she could get a ribbon too!!! (To hear about how YOU can join us in helping Margret, please read my previous post!)

AND THEN…a few fun pictures from our day!

Unfortunately–after 2 years with no losses…our team lost their first soccer game by 1 point. My little man was disappointed BUT they played well–and so proud of my little man.

We had a restful afternoon and did some yard work and some prep for our really fun AFRICAN ADOPTION FELLOWSHIP!!! AND…guess what today’s gathering was??? It was our 1 Year Anniversary doing life together!!!! I adore these families–and I’m so thankful that are families are growing up together, raising our children together and that our children love one another!

The kids were READY for it to get dark so we could do what we LOVE to do at these meetings…SMORES by the fire! Sorry–didn’t get any smores pictures because Rachel Campbell and I were TOO busy passing out ingredients:)…but here’s another of more of the kids before it got dark…

Tonight was our Fall Festival Fun night…complete with apple bobbing, beanbag toss, pin-the-tail on the donkey and of course freeze tag. I am SO thankful we made an effort to start this group ONE year ago this month…and we all see how important it is to our children too. I think it is so important for our children to get to be with other families JUST like ours–and for these kids who are trans-racially adopted to have STRONG bonds all the way from babyhood to growing up with one another…that I know will be so beneficial and meaningful all the way up to adulthood. I talk to so many adoption families who wish they could have a group like this to meet regularly with–so I encourage you to reach out and START one if that is you!!! Angie Carley and I tag-teamed the first meeting a year ago–and we just invited our adoption friends we knew of in our area…and how it has grown!!! We have rejoiced together! Cheered at the airports during homecomings together! Celebrated many birthdays together! These nights are our priority for our children more than any other gathering we do…and we just loooove the families who the Lord has brought into our family–and I truly feel these people are our family!!!

SOOOO thankful for these mommas! (Only about half of us were here tonight!) But here’s half our momma crew…

It’s just been a year together…and we’ve already been through more with the waiting, traveling, praying desperately for court dates, etc…for one another. So thankful to be on and in this journey with so many precious families. Happy 1 year together to some of my favorite friends in the whole wide world!

XOXO,

Andrea

Had SO much fun! I have to say the “SMOREing” it up was definitely the highlight for me ๐Ÿ™‚ xoxo. And WOW- cant believe its been a year!

When It Takes a Village {A chance of a lifetime…to save someone else’s}

The easy thing would be to look away…say “that’s so sad”…and I’ll pray for her.

Part of my heart was tempted to just do that. After all, in a world full of problems–some times it feels like that is the only thing I can do.

But this time…it’s different.

It was just minutes before class began in a small little school in Ndola, Zambia at Wiphan school–a school we have poured our hearts and lives into the past 5 years. All the little girls ran past her giggling…while she limped to barely make it there on time. Just as she was about to pass me–she looked up and our eyes locked. Margret. I remembered…

Before coming I had gone through all the pictures of my friend’s sponsored children–promising to do my best to pull them each aside while I was there–and tell them how dearly loved they were. And so I did.

But telling this girl–wasn’t easy…because I was dumbfounded by her appearance…something not only wasn’t right–but something was terribly wrong. Three U.S. team members sat looking at her in disbelief–wondering if I knew more about her story…wondering how I would handle this conversation…

First though–she needed to know she was loved. Sister Mary was beside me and although Margret can speak some English–Sister Mary was there to translate between us…

“Margret! I am Andrea. Linda is my friend…your sponsored family in America wanted me to find you–and tell you how much they love you…how much they pray for you. Margret…you are beautiful. Do you know that?? You are perfectly and wonderfully made.”

Her eyes lit up. Had she been told? Had she forgotten? And then she told me herself without my asking…

“The other children are scared of me. My leg is too big. It is too hard for me to play with them–and some times they make fun of me.”

“Oh Margret–you are beautiful. To me–you are perfect. Did you know you are beautiful?”

“No.” Her head hung low…and then she glanced up–her eyes beamed–and she smiled. “But I have witches living in my leg. That is what my mother has told me. Every since I was a baby–she said a curse has been on me. This is why my leg is big. There is no medicine to help me because it is witches.”

“Margret. You are a Wiphan student–so I believe you have heard about Jesus…no? Do you believe in Jesus Margret?”

“YES! Of course I do! I believe!”

“Well Margret–let me tell you the truth. You do NOT have witches living in your leg. You are NOT under a curse. Did you know that if you have Jesus in your heart Margret that the evil one has NO power of you. Did you know?!”

The biggest smile…one that would fill up heaven and make the angels sing crossed her face. “REALLY?! Is this the truth??”

“Yes. It is the truth!!! Margret–we need to take you to a real doctor. Not a witch doctor–but a REAL doctor. Have you ever been to one?”

“No. But if you can get Sister Mary to talk to my mom and explain this isn’t witches–I think I can go.”

Margret and I sat together and talked for awhile longer–and throughout the week…I couldn’t help but fall in love with her gentle, sweet spirit. Often she walked alone, but with such bravery and courage to still come to school every day despite her condition.

We guessed her case was elephantiasis–and this would not be good for a child of her age as it was obvious the disease had progressed not only to her feet but all the way up her leg and now into her buttocks and lower back. This can be spread through mosquitoes–and suddenly I feared how many others might be carriers as it can be 8 years before symptoms appear at all. We knew the local clinics might not know how to diagnose this case–so to be sure, we also asked permission to take pictures to ask doctors before taking her to the private clinics and doctors in the area.

It was obvious one of her tiny legs was carrying an infection…

I wish I could say the swelling stops there. But–it goes all the way up to her lower back–and it’s obvious she has two large tumors just below her lower back as well.

And because I hugged her…heard her gentle, soft voice…watched her try her best to keep up with classmates…

…because I thought, “What if she were MINE…I would do anything for her to be well…”

and because she is HIS I can’t just look the other way, say “that is so sad”…I’m going to pray for her…and walk away…and forget.

I got home and immediately contacted the H family–I didn’t know what we could do…but we knew we had to do something. Kristin, Wiphan’s intern, was returning to Zambia a couple of weeks later and we wouldn’t be able to do anything more until then. The H’s have fallen in love with their sponsored child, Margret–and they were as devastated as I was just as if they had held her themselves. They asked if they could send over something to encourage her–and while we typically don’t send special things to just our sponsored kids as so many are not sponsored YET…this was a different case…

Margret receiving a care package from her sponsored family in September 2011

My husband had the opportunity to return to Zambia the first week of October–just a little over a month after Kristin’s return. Kristin had been trying to get Margret to a clinic–but as the events would play out–she was finally able to go during their visit. Richard got side-tracked with the sudden death of our school’s principle while he was there…so Kristin had to follow up last week after they returned home from the U.S. And we FINALLY received a diagnosis for this precious girl’s problem.

The good news is this–it is NOT elephantiasis! AND even better–she CAN be helped!!!

The bad news is…the damage done to her leg is now dead tissue–and there may be nothing they can do about the swollen dead tissue. BUT it can be stopped now from becoming worse with surgery!

And THIS is where the village comes in.

The H family, Margret’s sponsored family, have a young daughter–just a few years older than Margret. During the last year, the Lord has moved their daughter’s heart in BIG ways on behalf of orphans. She has started a blog called “Orphan’s Lifeguard”…and she has a very big idea. To save the life of her sponsored child.

On Wiphan’s behalf–I have shared with this family Magret’s diagnosis–and you can read the complete diagnosis on the Orphan’s Lifeguard blog. The first thing–there are 2 tumors in her legs that must be removed to determine the exact cause of swelling. The tumors may or may not be cancerous–and we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. But for now we need to raise $2,000 to cover her surgery and post-surgery care. Without this surgery, it may be a fatal case…and we feel compelled to do something as the body of Christ…as His village…to potentially save her life.

I just went to their daughter’s blog and saw a picture she posted of Labstone reading a letter to her from their family. They were in a car–and Labstone was taking Margret to her very first clinic visit after we received approval from her mom. There Labstone is…the principle we lost while Richard was there…the friend we wish we COULD have saved…trying to help SAVE her. For him–it is much too late…and he is now with Jesus. But for Margaret…we CAN do something.

Labstone reading to Margret to calm her nerves on her first visit to the doctor

Our plan is to raise $2,000. I believe the Lord will do this…through some of your reading…through some of you who feel compelled to share this story on your blogs, on Facebook or emailing to your friends. I believe through this the Lord will be glorified…that Margret’s life CAN be saved…that H family–and their daughter’s faith in the Almighty and how He can use her in her young age can be strengthened…that Margret’s mother, family and village might see Jesus in this…that His name might be greater because of it. Will you join us–in making a different in Margret’s future…and the ripple effect I know this will have on so many?

Please visit the Orphan’s Lifeguard blog to find out how you can make a tax-deductible donation directly to Wiphan for Margret’s surgery–and please also read how she wants to involve EVERY donor in encouraging Margret in the hospital while she is recovering. VISIT BLOG HERE TO JOIN US IN HELPING MARGRET.

What a beautiful picture of two little girls…across the world from one another. Across the world they live–and they are BOTH impacting one another in ways that are life-changing. If you have a moment–please pray for Margret–and for the fundraiser for her…that the Lord will bless it. We would be honored to have you a part of our village…it’s the body of Christ–coming together…in love…to impact the world for His good name.

Blessings to you as you run this race with perseverance!

Literally … tears. Thank you, Andrea. xoxo

If 50 families sacrifice eating out ONE night & donate instead then her surgery will be covered! Praying for hearts to open and for blessings on everyone who lives out their faith by helping Margret. This is a situation where it is impossible to say no. Praying for the chance of a new life, for love, acceptance & healing for this child of God. Luke 8:50 Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”
