Win a FREE registration fee to the JANUARY Created for Care retreat!

A little shout out for the Cookman crew!

Just before Created for Care registration opened up–the Cookman family contacted me to see if they could purchase TWO spots to the Created for Care retreat. I told her she could purchase how ever many she wanted as long as she bought them before the retreat sold out. SO…she was one of the many to stay up until midnight to be sure she could buy more than one ticket! The Cookman family wants to bless a family with a spot at the Janaury retreat–AND they are doing a fundraiser on their blog. No purchase is necessary to enter the retreat registration give-away–all you have to do is leave a comment on their family’s blog entry!!!

VISIT THE COOKMAN FAMILY BLOG HERE!

They have a couple of really fun things you can purchase to help them with their adoption fundraiser—so check out their blog to see the fun! I really want to buy my kids “I’m Going to Change the World” tees from Ordinary Hero–Ordinary Hero is giving the Cookmans 40% of sales to their adoption agency to go toward their adoption. You can read details on their blog. How cute are these tees???!!!

I’m going to head on over to Ordinary Hero and get some of these for Christmas gifts!!! How fun would it be for ALL of your gifts this year to benefit things like this!!?? They are also partnering with a shop that sells adorable placemats. Read instructions on their blog how to purchase. How cute are these…

Or this one…

They have some other things up to…so go check out the Cookman Family HERE!

AND…a quick update on the Young’s…

I’ve had several folks ask where in the world are we with OUR adoption??!! We are getting there!!! We should have our home study written up in the next couple of weeks and we’ll send it off to Immigration once it’s written!! On SUNDAY (yesterday) we had the privilege of having lunch with the sweet lady from China who will actually match us with our daughter!!! She was in country just last week and some of this week–and we are so thankful for the opportunity to have met her! I’m hoping we will be matched by Christmas…or at least by the first Created for Care retreat at the end of January so I can share my daughter’s picture with everyone:). Richard and I are getting really EXCITED to be nearing the end of the paper chase (it only took 6 months this time…HA! It just took 4 weeks for our Ethiopian adoption!)

I’ll let y’all know as SOON as we are set and officially waiting on a referral so y’all can all hold your breath with us!! We have wider perimeters this time ’round…and our agency told us our wait should be short…so that is another reason we’ve moseyed through the process this time–cause if you were a fly on the wall in our house on any given day…you’d see CRAZY!!! That’s the way we roll:)

Hope you all have a GREAT week!!!

XOXO!

Are you SERIOUS?!?! Andrea! I had ZERO idea you were gonna do an entire POST on this…on us. I wouldn’t have expected more than just a little line at the end of one of yours just so people know and don’t miss out on the giveaway. I never in my wildest dreams imagined THIS. The response has been so wonderful! I’m still going to send you an email, but I just had to say THANK YOU publicly. And I so HOPE you have a picture of your girl by January because then I’ll get to see her face AND you in person! Thank you for blessing us daily in so many ways.
Love,
Rory

Ok, so it’s 2am and I just couldn’t sleep because this little one has been so heavily on my heart. Just happened to check your blog & surprise, once again God makes the impossible possible!!! Praying for amazing surgeons and a miraculous recovery! God is going to use this little one to speak to the hearts of many!

WOW! WOW! WOW! I haven’t done any blog-reading or much Facebooking in the past week or so so totally missed this project! Margret has been on my heart for months. Praising God for a diagnosis and funding for surgery! Praying for wise doctors, complete healing, and JOY and HOPE for precious Margret.

half way there!!! {and a few fun pictures from our day}

We are hoping to raise $2,000 for Margret’s surgery by next week–and just after posting the need yesterday…we are HALF WAY THERE! (Yes!!! Can you believe it??!!! $1,000 has been raised in ONE night!) Sooooo exciting! One of my Zambia trip teammates just sent me this precious picture of Margret. She is just so precious…and I can’t wait for her to hear she is going to finally get treatment!

Isn’t she beautiful??!! And although her foot can’t fit in a soccer shoe–she was DETERMINED to play soccer with the other children while we were there so she could get a ribbon too!!! (To hear about how YOU can join us in helping Margret, please read my previous post!)

AND THEN…a few fun pictures from our day!

Unfortunately–after 2 years with no losses…our team lost their first soccer game by 1 point. My little man was disappointed BUT they played well–and so proud of my little man.

We had a restful afternoon and did some yard work and some prep for our really fun AFRICAN ADOPTION FELLOWSHIP!!! AND…guess what today’s gathering was??? It was our 1 Year Anniversary doing life together!!!! I adore these families–and I’m so thankful that are families are growing up together, raising our children together and that our children love one another!

The kids were READY for it to get dark so we could do what we LOVE to do at these meetings…SMORES by the fire! Sorry–didn’t get any smores pictures because Rachel Campbell and I were TOO busy passing out ingredients:)…but here’s another of more of the kids before it got dark…

Tonight was our Fall Festival Fun night…complete with apple bobbing, beanbag toss, pin-the-tail on the donkey and of course freeze tag. I am SO thankful we made an effort to start this group ONE year ago this month…and we all see how important it is to our children too. I think it is so important for our children to get to be with other families JUST like ours–and for these kids who are trans-racially adopted to have STRONG bonds all the way from babyhood to growing up with one another…that I know will be so beneficial and meaningful all the way up to adulthood. I talk to so many adoption families who wish they could have a group like this to meet regularly with–so I encourage you to reach out and START one if that is you!!! Angie Carley and I tag-teamed the first meeting a year ago–and we just invited our adoption friends we knew of in our area…and how it has grown!!! We have rejoiced together! Cheered at the airports during homecomings together! Celebrated many birthdays together! These nights are our priority for our children more than any other gathering we do…and we just loooove the families who the Lord has brought into our family–and I truly feel these people are our family!!!

SOOOO thankful for these mommas! (Only about half of us were here tonight!) But here’s half our momma crew…

It’s just been a year together…and we’ve already been through more with the waiting, traveling, praying desperately for court dates, etc…for one another. So thankful to be on and in this journey with so many precious families. Happy 1 year together to some of my favorite friends in the whole wide world!

XOXO,

Andrea

Had SO much fun! I have to say the “SMOREing” it up was definitely the highlight for me ๐Ÿ™‚ xoxo. And WOW- cant believe its been a year!

When It Takes a Village {A chance of a lifetime…to save someone else’s}

The easy thing would be to look away…say “that’s so sad”…and I’ll pray for her.

Part of my heart was tempted to just do that. After all, in a world full of problems–some times it feels like that is the only thing I can do.

But this time…it’s different.

It was just minutes before class began in a small little school in Ndola, Zambia at Wiphan school–a school we have poured our hearts and lives into the past 5 years. All the little girls ran past her giggling…while she limped to barely make it there on time. Just as she was about to pass me–she looked up and our eyes locked. Margret. I remembered…

Before coming I had gone through all the pictures of my friend’s sponsored children–promising to do my best to pull them each aside while I was there–and tell them how dearly loved they were. And so I did.

But telling this girl–wasn’t easy…because I was dumbfounded by her appearance…something not only wasn’t right–but something was terribly wrong. Three U.S. team members sat looking at her in disbelief–wondering if I knew more about her story…wondering how I would handle this conversation…

First though–she needed to know she was loved. Sister Mary was beside me and although Margret can speak some English–Sister Mary was there to translate between us…

“Margret! I am Andrea. Linda is my friend…your sponsored family in America wanted me to find you–and tell you how much they love you…how much they pray for you. Margret…you are beautiful. Do you know that?? You are perfectly and wonderfully made.”

Her eyes lit up. Had she been told? Had she forgotten? And then she told me herself without my asking…

“The other children are scared of me. My leg is too big. It is too hard for me to play with them–and some times they make fun of me.”

“Oh Margret–you are beautiful. To me–you are perfect. Did you know you are beautiful?”

“No.” Her head hung low…and then she glanced up–her eyes beamed–and she smiled. “But I have witches living in my leg. That is what my mother has told me. Every since I was a baby–she said a curse has been on me. This is why my leg is big. There is no medicine to help me because it is witches.”

“Margret. You are a Wiphan student–so I believe you have heard about Jesus…no? Do you believe in Jesus Margret?”

“YES! Of course I do! I believe!”

“Well Margret–let me tell you the truth. You do NOT have witches living in your leg. You are NOT under a curse. Did you know that if you have Jesus in your heart Margret that the evil one has NO power of you. Did you know?!”

The biggest smile…one that would fill up heaven and make the angels sing crossed her face. “REALLY?! Is this the truth??”

“Yes. It is the truth!!! Margret–we need to take you to a real doctor. Not a witch doctor–but a REAL doctor. Have you ever been to one?”

“No. But if you can get Sister Mary to talk to my mom and explain this isn’t witches–I think I can go.”

Margret and I sat together and talked for awhile longer–and throughout the week…I couldn’t help but fall in love with her gentle, sweet spirit. Often she walked alone, but with such bravery and courage to still come to school every day despite her condition.

We guessed her case was elephantiasis–and this would not be good for a child of her age as it was obvious the disease had progressed not only to her feet but all the way up her leg and now into her buttocks and lower back. This can be spread through mosquitoes–and suddenly I feared how many others might be carriers as it can be 8 years before symptoms appear at all. We knew the local clinics might not know how to diagnose this case–so to be sure, we also asked permission to take pictures to ask doctors before taking her to the private clinics and doctors in the area.

It was obvious one of her tiny legs was carrying an infection…

I wish I could say the swelling stops there. But–it goes all the way up to her lower back–and it’s obvious she has two large tumors just below her lower back as well.

And because I hugged her…heard her gentle, soft voice…watched her try her best to keep up with classmates…

…because I thought, “What if she were MINE…I would do anything for her to be well…”

and because she is HIS I can’t just look the other way, say “that is so sad”…I’m going to pray for her…and walk away…and forget.

I got home and immediately contacted the H family–I didn’t know what we could do…but we knew we had to do something. Kristin, Wiphan’s intern, was returning to Zambia a couple of weeks later and we wouldn’t be able to do anything more until then. The H’s have fallen in love with their sponsored child, Margret–and they were as devastated as I was just as if they had held her themselves. They asked if they could send over something to encourage her–and while we typically don’t send special things to just our sponsored kids as so many are not sponsored YET…this was a different case…

Margret receiving a care package from her sponsored family in September 2011

My husband had the opportunity to return to Zambia the first week of October–just a little over a month after Kristin’s return. Kristin had been trying to get Margret to a clinic–but as the events would play out–she was finally able to go during their visit. Richard got side-tracked with the sudden death of our school’s principle while he was there…so Kristin had to follow up last week after they returned home from the U.S. And we FINALLY received a diagnosis for this precious girl’s problem.

The good news is this–it is NOT elephantiasis! AND even better–she CAN be helped!!!

The bad news is…the damage done to her leg is now dead tissue–and there may be nothing they can do about the swollen dead tissue. BUT it can be stopped now from becoming worse with surgery!

And THIS is where the village comes in.

The H family, Margret’s sponsored family, have a young daughter–just a few years older than Margret. During the last year, the Lord has moved their daughter’s heart in BIG ways on behalf of orphans. She has started a blog called “Orphan’s Lifeguard”…and she has a very big idea. To save the life of her sponsored child.

On Wiphan’s behalf–I have shared with this family Magret’s diagnosis–and you can read the complete diagnosis on the Orphan’s Lifeguard blog. The first thing–there are 2 tumors in her legs that must be removed to determine the exact cause of swelling. The tumors may or may not be cancerous–and we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. But for now we need to raise $2,000 to cover her surgery and post-surgery care. Without this surgery, it may be a fatal case…and we feel compelled to do something as the body of Christ…as His village…to potentially save her life.

I just went to their daughter’s blog and saw a picture she posted of Labstone reading a letter to her from their family. They were in a car–and Labstone was taking Margret to her very first clinic visit after we received approval from her mom. There Labstone is…the principle we lost while Richard was there…the friend we wish we COULD have saved…trying to help SAVE her. For him–it is much too late…and he is now with Jesus. But for Margaret…we CAN do something.

Labstone reading to Margret to calm her nerves on her first visit to the doctor

Our plan is to raise $2,000. I believe the Lord will do this…through some of your reading…through some of you who feel compelled to share this story on your blogs, on Facebook or emailing to your friends. I believe through this the Lord will be glorified…that Margret’s life CAN be saved…that H family–and their daughter’s faith in the Almighty and how He can use her in her young age can be strengthened…that Margret’s mother, family and village might see Jesus in this…that His name might be greater because of it. Will you join us–in making a different in Margret’s future…and the ripple effect I know this will have on so many?

Please visit the Orphan’s Lifeguard blog to find out how you can make a tax-deductible donation directly to Wiphan for Margret’s surgery–and please also read how she wants to involve EVERY donor in encouraging Margret in the hospital while she is recovering. VISIT BLOG HERE TO JOIN US IN HELPING MARGRET.

What a beautiful picture of two little girls…across the world from one another. Across the world they live–and they are BOTH impacting one another in ways that are life-changing. If you have a moment–please pray for Margret–and for the fundraiser for her…that the Lord will bless it. We would be honored to have you a part of our village…it’s the body of Christ–coming together…in love…to impact the world for His good name.

Blessings to you as you run this race with perseverance!

Literally … tears. Thank you, Andrea. xoxo

Sandi Herring - October 22, 2011 - 1:27 am

If 50 families sacrifice eating out ONE night & donate instead then her surgery will be covered! Praying for hearts to open and for blessings on everyone who lives out their faith by helping Margret. This is a situation where it is impossible to say no. Praying for the chance of a new life, for love, acceptance & healing for this child of God. Luke 8:50 Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

Because we were BOTH created for His care…

There were so many things I took away from the last Created for Care momma’s retreat (a retreat designed for adoption moms–but you do NOT have to be an adoption mom to come!), but one thing that has blessed me most–is learning to live in His gift of coming to Him WITH my children.

One of my favorite verses and the very one we use for the heart of Created for Care is Psalm 84:3…

Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young–a place near your altar, O LORD Almighty, my King and my God.

Other versions say “where she may RAISE her young”…near your alter…near the Almighty…our King and our God.

I went into the retreat feeling very depleted. So…how does a mom with 4 kids 5 and under have quiet time…or even partially distracted/focused time seeking the Lord, praying for her day, RESTING (for real…resting???) in Him??? I felt like this was something my heart LONGED for…but my time spent with Jesus in quiet time and prayer was so, so scattered–and often I felt far away…and–TIRED.

I had spent months planning with veteran adoption mommas–and I had loved the name Created TO Care. I mean–I felt God called me TO care for my kids…TO care for orphans, TO DO THIS…TO DO THAT…and then–there I sat…tired, alone and feeling like no one understood. My precious friend Susan Hillis (one of Created for Cares visionaries and main speakers) came to me and challenged me to pray about not focusing on the TO but instead the FOR. “Andrea, don’t you know–the Lord created YOU to be cared FOR???

Did you know that God created YOU to be cared for??? And before you can truly care for others–truly be an outpouring of His strength, joy and love…you must allow your Father in heaven to care FOR you…

It made sense…this was most important. And Created to Care–was changed to Created FOR Care.

Yes. My heart knew in needed more of His filling. It felt this. And it longed for all of this. But in my crazy world–it often just felt impossible. We also felt the Lord calling us to adopt AGAIN…(really Lord??? How can I build my cute little nest right next to you if I’m trying to keep up with more and more chicks every day?!)…and then homeschool (um–alone time Lord??? When does THAT happen???) Well, alone time for me–is RARE. And it DOES happen…but not very often during my quiet time any more. But this, for me, is where change has really happened in my heart, my home and where my nest is built this year.

You see, the swallow in the Psalm raises her young near His alter. She doesn’t run there for her quiet time while her chicks are sleeping or while they are at preschool or when everyone has gone to bed. She literally raises her young there. She brings them to the alter WITH her…and she raises them there.

I once dreamed of a time where I’d sit with coffee, my Bible and journal…with worship music softly playing…where I could sit and be still and just REST. While that does sound dreamy–it’s now just tweaked a bit…and the children–they are come with me. We roll out of bed…I plug in my iPhone/ipod playlist and they start there day dancing together to worship music. I know that might sound crazy to some of you–but my kids love it…and they are even some times amused by my lack of dance skills. Some times I sit back and just watch while I drink my coffee. Other times…I close my eyes and take in the words–with their giggles and silliness in between.

My heart longs for more–I take them with me…to raise them at His alter…

We start our school day together…we are still in Genesis together. We pull out old school felt stories (love my Betty Lukens read through the Bible for children felt set) and we read the story for the day. Then we sit…and talk and talk about what it was like…how they felt. Just yesterday Parker told me that he would NOT have wanted to be Isaac–because his parents were SO old…and he just knew it’d be different camping and fishing with a 100 year old dad verses his experience with his daddy. Laney told me she agreed–and although she thought the story of Rebekah and Isaac was sort of fairytale-ish at first–she would NOT just leave with Abraham’s servant without spending a few nights telling mommy and daddy good-bye first. They are soaking it in…and it’s so amazing to hear their thoughts, their perspectives and to give them things to think about. How beautiful it is to sit at His alter together. (And you don’t have to be homeschooling to have this daily time of devotional sweetness with your children…this would be a sweet nightly story time any night of the week! Their devotional has become mine…and mine there’s and for this season–it is just what my heart has needed.)

After our time we share prayer requests and pray together…and then we start our school day. Some days there are times when things just get loud and crazy…you know–the times when you want to just stop and shout, “EVERYBODY!!!! BE QUIET! MOMMY CAN’T HEAR HERSELF THINK!!!” And you would LOVE to just brew a cup of coffee and regroup with scripture, prayer and song. It’s moments like these that I remember our “Date with God” time at Created for Care and how truly…the different stations we went to are just PERFECT for children too! Yesterday, Loobear had a friend over to play and Parker was DYING to play with them. I explained it was HER play date–and he needed to let them have girl time. He did just that for del over an hour–but he was ITCHING to play after that…and as things started to get loud–I decided to do the “Date with God painting station”…realizing their are different ways to have quiet times…to listen to the Lord…to think about Him…opens up a million ways to build your nest close to Him. Each time we paint to worship music, I ask them different questions to inspire their painting time…”What do you see God doing around you?”…”Can you paint what you feel the Lord saying to you?”…”What does the Lord’s love look like to you?”…Here is a little snippet of what this time looks like for my kids–(and I have to tell you it is SO amazing to sit and just watch them as the music plays…or to crack a door in the next room and pray that the Lord will begin speaking to their hearts…or to just open up scripture as they paint and have a sweet time between you and the Lord…)

Some of the other stations at the Date with God time were…a play dough station where you sculpt, a prayer station full of globes where you pray for different countries and world needs, a place to leave your burdens–where you write your prayer requests on sticky notes and leave them on a cross…you get the idea:). You can be creative!

And for me–I am NOT a morning person–so I really do need some help getting my perspective in the right place before we start our day. With our littles there is really NO way I could beat them up in the morning–okay…maybe I could set my alarm for really early…but I’ll tell you–I know me…and that won’t work. And you need to have a plan for where you build your nest that WILL WORK (we were all created differently:). Here is a sneak peak of how we start our mornings…(okay–Frank isn’t ALWAYS this funny when dancing…and Parker some times giggles when Laney puts on slow music and does ballet…but how you NOT start your day with JOY when you start your day to THIS…)

This mom is FAR from perfect…actually–I’m so far from perfect that I really do need His help so much throughout my day–every day. And for those of you with teeny, tiny kids–I just wanted to encourage you during those times it feels hard or impossible to have sacred time…that maybe inviting our littles INTO our time and raising them RIGHT at His alter like the sparrow is exactly what He might be asking and hoping we will do.

May you have a blessed Thursday!!!

Your sister in Christ,

Andrea

P.S. If you didn’t see these amazing tees on my blog yesterday–GO check it out!! AND if you buy one–PLEASE let me know because I’m adding you guys to a really fun give away that consists of the oh-so-amazing Wiphan cookbook and some other really cool stuff!!! Be a part of a miracle!!!

Andrea, this post was SO good for me! Made me EXCITED to get the kiddos to joint WITH me at the Lords altar. So often I feel like I have to be there first to lead them there, but in reality…they can lead US there so many times! As moms I feel like often we keep looking and looking ahead (even just 20 minutes ahead!) to look for that “alone” time to pour out our heart before the Lord. Then, we are missing the present moments. THANK YOU for this! ๐Ÿ™‚

Melissa - October 20, 2011 - 7:56 am

I love this! This post was a wonderful way to start MY day! You should write a book! I’d definitely buy it! ๐Ÿ™‚

I just bought a T-shirt! I have felt called to adopt from China for a year & a half now, but hubby not ready so I have focused my energy on families in need & orphans in Africa. Yet the pull to China is stronger than anything I have ever felt & goes HEART deep, that there will be a child there who needs us, waiting. A child who needs surgery…it just tears at my soul. I keep trying to let it go but the reminders are everywhere & pop up in the strangest circumstances. I will be praying day & night for this family…to God be the Glory…

Elle J - October 20, 2011 - 11:03 am

LOL – Even Rosie “Got Down…” Your kiddos are adorable with some fine dance moves. A kid-fave song in our household too.

Christy - October 20, 2011 - 1:20 pm

yay, I can post on your blog again. Left you a FB comment about what a blessing this blog post was to me this morning. Then I went to buy my shirt and realized this family lives very close to me and the dad was a former youth pastor of mine. What a small world and once again you are a blessing by connecting me to them and their story!!!! How amazing is our God!

leslie - October 20, 2011 - 3:39 pm

I ordered my t-shirt yesterday. Love the design. Can’t wait to hear the story.
