How we display our cards {and a nativity sneak peak}

One of my MOST FAVORITE things is checking my mailbox each day and getting Christmas cards from my dearest friends! (If you haven’t got one from us yet and you are a dear friend–I am super slacker this year and still have a stack to put in the mail!) I’ll have to post ours here tomorrow because it takes me back:).

Every year I display our cards in a different way. This year–I used our magnet boards AGAIN (that’s what I made them for last year!) AND I decided to add them to one of our trees in the white room:)

Magnets hold up the cards on these boards…and once these are full–I moved on to the Christmas tree beside them…

And some how the white room in our house stays white…(how this happens…I do not know:)

HOW DO YOU DISPLAY YOUR CHRISTMAS CARDS???

In other news…

The Youngs have joined forces with the McBrayers to put on a nativity play for the daddies later this week. This was ONLY a PARTIAL dress rehearsal! Here is a sneak peak: Mary and Gabriel…

Shepherds…

Sorry for the FLASH brightness of this next one (I’m a natural light photographer and STINK at anything flash! BUT I still caught the memory and that’s all that matters!) Meet the 3 wise men…

Our full cast (minus Joseph and baby Jesus)…

Followed by our cast Christmas party and cookie decorating!

That’s all folks!

Hope ya’ll all have a great day!!! I celebrated my 35th birthday today with my sweet family–and Rico Suave blew momma away with the most amazing gift!!! I am floored and thankful!!! I had THE best birthday with my kiddos–and then Christmas shopping with Rico and then dinner with my sister and brother-in-law! I feel SO blessed and truly feel like I’m so blessed!!!!!!

Blessings to you!

LOVE the nativity play – so cute!!!! And Happy Birthday! I just turned 35 on the 15th. Hard to believe we’re this age already, huh? πŸ™‚

Amanda - December 20, 2011 - 7:54 am

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!! Sounds like it was the perfect day! Love the cards on the tree, can’t wait to see more from your final performance and those cookies look delish πŸ™‚

Lara - December 20, 2011 - 8:59 am

I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who hates flash. I still haven’t figured out how to use it during those times when I have to.

Loving the beards!

Melanie - December 20, 2011 - 12:05 pm

I LOVE the magnetic boards! What a great idea! I’m with you about going to the mailbox this time of year. I LOVE the Christmas cards. I have a friend who suggested years ago to keep a basket on the coffee table in which to put cards. I keep the basket out ALL YEAR! If the card has a picture, I never throw it away! I have cards from 5 years ago in my basket. I realized this year I need to do some cleaning out. I hardly have room! Every time I have guests in my home they immediately sit on the sofa and pick up the basket. It’s such fun conversation! MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and your family!

In the LAST 24 hours…

We have:

1. Welcomed home a precious little boy from Ethiopia and watched him meet his forever family at the airport.

The Carley’s are in our small group that meets every other week in our home. We’ve gone to church with them for several years–and we’ve watched them wait for 2 years to bring this little guy home. What a JOY it was to see him finally home! Such a miracle…and we celebrate with them!

Our crazy crew missed their naps yesterday to journey to the airport with Kimberly Chalk and Laura McBrayer. The McBrayer’s have a little guy that was crib mates with Isaac AND Kimberly and her sweet husband are waiting for their first child from Ethiopia. (You can follow their journey here.) If you ever wanna know who this momma spends her time with…this is my crew. LOVE them all dearly–and the 4 of us are in a small group together. Here are our crazy kiddos…sitting down after running around like CRAZY after Sammy’s arrival!

2. Visited a live nativity scene…

MAN–I got choked up singing at the end after watching this!!! I can’t IMAGINE what a miracle this was for the wiremen and shepherds to experience!!! 8 days until Christmas…and we’ve YET to buy one gift…we seriously are going to get on it at some point…but I LOOOVE that we haven’t been focused on that aspect of Christmas. The McBrayer kids and the Young kids went to the nativity together AND on Sunday–we are practicing our OWN nativity play complete with outfits from Oriental Trading Company. (I’ll video their final production and share it for sure!)

It was so cool at the live nativity (we went TWO nights in a row because we loved it so much!) and BOTH times they let us stay later and pet the donkey, camel, sheep and goats. One thing that grabbed me was the smell of farm animal poop. Yep. I smelled it. And I just kept thinking–that THIS was what the stable probably smelled like…that THE KING was born in! I just sat there thinking–what a humble Savior of the world we have. In our world–we can get so caught up with keeping up…but He really could have cared less. He came to be a servant and to be sacrificed for a people who didn’t deserve it. He could’ve come boasting…but he came among farm animals–and all the smells that come with them. All for us. So we would know Him and experience His love.Amazing grace.

3. Went to, watched and unfortunately lost a basketball game–but had so much fun playing it. That’s all that matters–but my 7 year old son says it’s really important to win too:) Sorry no pictures to prove it.

4. Completed grocery shopping for the week ahead at Trader Joes (I love Trader Joes and their gluten free selections).

5. Sewed the most adorable skirt for Laney-loo…

You’ve gotta see it on and in person. I have a few finishing touches to do…a button in the center of the flower I added to the corner and a cute little pocket with the coordinating fabric. Then I’ll whip up the top to match in the coordinating fabric as well:-).

6. Found a new home for our two finches. Yep. I guess I didn’t know my limits–and it’s caring 4 kids and a dog (at least for now)–and the dog with her shedding is really pushing it;). A friend from my home-town in Alabama is taking them in–and her two children will wake up on Christmas morning to the sounds of their sweet little chirps.

7. Decorated 4 gingerbread men with my 4 little sweeties (the gingerbread man kit was on sale for just $0.99 today!)…

There’s never a dull moment around here that is for sure!!! And I’m sure the next 24 hours will be just as action filled as we practice our nativity play tomorrow with the McBrayers and have a little Christmas celebration afterwards. Hope you all have a blessed holiday!

As we reflect on the nativity–the Christmas story this Christmas, I am reminded of something the Lord showed me last Christmas. So often our Christmas is surrounded by SO much joy, baking, fun, gifts (and this IS part of Christmas!)…but for many–there is brokenness. For many at the nativity–there was also brokenness. BUT HE brought HOPE. Take a minute to read this post I wrote last year to be reminded of His bringing HOPE to broken stories and circumstances. I am so thankful that the Lord shines through our broken places and in ALL things He seeks to be glorified. I am so hopeful for the year ahead and all He will do!

Blessings to you all! And so thankful to be on the journey with you…

XOXO!

Lake Lanier Lights, Jesus loves me & THE WINNER IS…

Lake Lanier Lights

The awesome folks at Lake Lanier Lodge (THANK YOU April and Lake Lanier staff!) sent our family a ticket to come enjoy their Magical Night of Lights. So we loaded up the crew and headed out to let the kids Oooo and Ahhh over the lights.

The loved the drive-in movie of the Bethlehem journey…

Then we roasted marshmallows at the end and got ready to ride some of the fun rides!

We let everyone choose ONE ride. Isaac chose the carousel and wanted daddy and Frank to join him…

Parker chose the bumper cars (and because all our kids BARELY were tall enough to ride anything–most required a parent to ride with!)…

Laney chose the dragon roller coaster–AND she wanted Parker to join her since they were BOTH tall enough to ride!

And then Frankie ended the night on the motorcycle

Jesus Loves Me

Keeping our days in December focused on the reason we celebrate–and with children…its just so sweet. Isaac and Frank love singing Jesus Loves Me (this is Isaac’s favorite song) so thought y’all like to see them singing–AND hear their sweet and funny answers about Jesus being born in the stable (gotta love typical Frank being Frank in this one!)…You might want scroll down and turn off the music before watching…

Another fun way we talk about Christmas is with our Betty Lukens felt stories. We keep our flannel boards downstairs in our basement where we have Bible time every morning–but I wanted to bring up the Christmas story pieces so the kids could play with them during the Christmas season. AND since we aren’t big TV watchers–we are using our tv as the flannel board (1 1/4 yards of black fabric was just enough to make a quick cover and it works as a flannel board!)

I usually find the older children perched up here throughout the day reenacting the manger scene……

Waking up each morning to sit and have coffee and look at this…seeing how the children have moved the pieces around each day thinking about another way the story might have happened…

AND THE WINNER IS…

The winner of Judith’s AMAZING cookbook is…

MEGAN FAULK! Congratulations Megan! I know you are going to love it! Judith will warm your heart with her stories and I’m sure whoever you give this too will be so thrilled with her recipes! If you would like to purchase Judith’s cookbook, you can visit her website here: http://www.theulsterkitchen.com

And that’s it folks! Hope you all have an amazing weekend!

On a quick update note–I’ve had several precious blog readers email me just to let us know they have been praying for us! (Thank you!) I’ve also had a few ask what our latest adoption status now with my health craziness. We truly appreciate your concern and wanting to support our family! Right now, I’m spending each week visiting different doctors and we are still in the waters of trying to figure out what the future has–and truthfully…we are taking each moment day by day. I had more testing down last week with infectious disease, and we are still waiting on those results. This doctor did say she recommended we wait a year before even considering adding to our family, so we’ll see. We’re taking in wise counsel and also resting in just wanting mommy to be 100% mommy. I’m in month 2 of Lyme treatment–and I have good days and then really tired days…but we’re hoping this time next year I’m 100% healed and we can go from there! All that being said–really, we don’t know much other than we are enjoying the moment, taking things as they come and placing everything in God’s hands and waiting on Him! There isn’t ONE gift under our tree…because truthfully–we haven’t thought about it and it hasn’t been a focus. Richard IS taking me out for my birthday on Monday (I’LL BE 35!!!)–and maybe we get a few things accomplished then! Truly, I’m so thankful for those of you who read and love our family–and who continue to cheer us on no matter what might come our way. Thank you for those of you who have prayed with us along our roller coasters, mountains and valleys–and you all truly bring me so much joy in your emails, comments and notes of encouragement!

Blessings to you this weekend!

The Shamrock and Peach {a recipe and a give away!}

I am super excited to share with you a newly published cookbook by our good friend and cook Judith McLoughlin!!! Richard and I had the pleasure of being in Gary and Judith’s small group a couple of years ago as they stepped out in faith to create this project. Every other Sunday, we met in their home–and we had the HONOR of sampling dishes that would grace the pages in this cookbook. (AMAZING DELISH…and what a deal we struck, huh?!) EVERY Bible study night we got to taste a new dish–and I’m forever sold to her recipes! Never will I forget when she served us the Scots-Irish Oaten Raspberry Cranachan (even the kids gobbled it up…and I have a picky crew!) What I really love about these dishes is how beautiful they all turn out making them perfect to serve at any occasion but also easy enough for busy moms to create.

So many knowing Judith’s gift encouraged Judith and Gary to step out in faith and peruse their dream of creating this cookbook–and I’m so super excited for them and that it is now a reality. Have you ever dreamed of doing something–but you just thought it’d be impossible to actually happen?? This is another reason I’m just so excited about this cookbook!!! I’ve always dreamed of writing a book–but oh my…not sure if I’ll ever do it. But Judith did–and her stories throughout this are so heart warming and refreshing (a perfect Christmas gift for someone who loves to cook in your life!) It’s beautiful too–making it even great for displaying on a coffee table.

This cookbook fuses together Irish and American dishes–starting with recipes that are traditional Ireland recipes with Judith’s touch, and they take a Southern twist halfway through…with recipes like “Queen of the south chicken salad with almonds & tarragon” and “Atlanta milk chocolate Coca-Cola cake”. (And I just spotted the well known JCT Kitchen chef Ford Fry’s coveted fried chicken recipe in the mix too! Did he really give that away in this book?!) This season, I think I’ll be whipping up her “Sweet and salty caramel squares” AND…oh my–the gingerbread scones too! Don’t they look perfect for a holiday gathering?!

Judith has graciously shared the recipe with me to share with YOU!!! (Thank you Judith!) It may not print out from my site–and if it doesn’t, you can click HERE and download and print.

β€’ 1⁄4 tsp. salt
β€’ 1 tsp. ground powdered ginger
β€’ 1⁄2 tsp. nutmeg
β€’ 3⁄4 tsp. cinnamon
β€’ 6 oz. (3⁄4 cup) butter (cut in to small pieces)
β€’ 1 egg (beaten)
β€’ 4 fl. oz. (1⁄2 cup) buttermilk
β€’ 2 fl. oz. (1⁄4 cup) molasses
β€’ egg wash (1 egg beaten with a milk )

β€’ 3 oz. cream cheese (room temperature)
β€’ 1 Tbsp. fine granulated sugar
β€’ zest of 1 lemon, or orange
β€’ pinch of kosher salt
β€’ 8 fl. oz. (1 cup) heavy whipping cream

how to make it
1. Preheat your oven to 425Β° F.
2. Sift the flour with the baking powder then combine
the remaining dry ingredients together in a food
processor or a large mixing bowl.
3. Cut the cold butter into the mixed dry ingredients
then rub the mixture together with your fingertips or add them slowly to a food processor to form a breadcrumb-like texture.
4. Beat the buttermilk, egg, and molasses together in a small bowl and combine with the dry ingredients,
mixing well.
Turn the resulting dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
6. Knead the dough a few times and then roll it out with a lightly floured rolling pin until it’s about 3⁄4” thick.
7. Cut the scones out of the flattened dough using a 1” biscuit cutter.
8. Brush dough scones with egg wash and place onto a lightly greased baking sheet.
9. Bake 12–15 minutes until well risen and golden brown on top, turning the baking tray halfway through baking time to ensure even baking.
10. Best served warm. Serve sliced in half and slathered with clotted cream.

how to make the citrus cream:
1. In an electric mixer, combine the cream cheese, lemon zest, sugar, and salt.
2. On low speed, combine the heavy whipping cream into the mixture, being careful not to over-beat, until cream mixture becomes stiff.
3. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

One day, when all our children are grown, I hope my dream becomes a reality!! II guess I need to stop adopting too first, LOL!!) Until then, I shall keep baking and passing on the recipes to my children!

I would love to write a children’s book. It’s always been a dream of mine, especially a Christmas children’s book.

I’d be tempted to keep the cookbook myself since I’m southern and from Irish descent but I’d probably give it away to one of my sisters or daughters and buy one myself. Thanks for the opportunity.

Thanks for the flour (gluten free exchange). My niece has just been diagnosed with a chronic illness and will need to be on a gluten free diet forever.

Alison - December 13, 2011 - 7:46 pm

Looks like a great cookbook! I would probably give it to my brother-in-law for Christmas! He is a great cook, and loves new cookbooks!

Jolene (Homespun Heritage) - December 13, 2011 - 8:49 pm

I dream of going to cooking school. I have 4 going on 6 children and I love cooking and baking. While it would be fun to do a cookbook it would be very difficult for me as I don’t measure and when I follow recipes I only take their measurements as suggestions! Either way, I would love to be properly trained. With the prospect of having many more children I’d love to head to cooking school!

Pauline Sumption - December 13, 2011 - 10:09 pm

I would give this cookbook to my dear friend, Dawn. Her husband is a “lot” Irish and they took a trip there to visit the beautiful castles and enjoy the scenery along the way. Dawn, on the other hand, is just about ALL Polish. She is an AMAZING cook and I love it when she cooks for my family and me.

Holly - December 13, 2011 - 10:34 pm

I would use this cookbook to expand my recipe repertoire. I am Scot/Irish and don’t have nearly enough experience cooking this type of food!

Christy - December 14, 2011 - 6:22 am

I have dreamed of writing a children’s book ever since I went through a writing program. And of adopting, of course! This cookbook looks so yummy!

Renae - December 14, 2011 - 10:53 am

I’m dreaming of a house FULL of sweet ones who have longed for a family. One down….many to come, I hope. Love your sweet blog Andrea- looking forward to meeting you at C4C in March.

I was once a volunteer teacher in Namibia and that experience changed my life! Africa is on my heart, and I dream of one day going back for a longer stay to love on those precious Namibian children.

I always dreamed of establishing my own preschool. The whole building/location part is what seems insurmountable, but I’m not dead yet!

Kristin - December 14, 2011 - 8:13 pm

I love personal cookbooks and always delight in the honor of making other family’s tried, true, and much loved recipes! I dream of God calling our family to up and move and serve in Africa. As hard as that might be, I do dream of it.

Amanda Rose - December 14, 2011 - 11:59 pm

Hi Andrea. I’m living a life at home with children “under my skirt” and discovering that it’s one of (many) secret paths to joy. My husband and I recently picked up and moved to the Charleston area from Atlanta so we can raise our three children in the Lowcountry. The marsh trails, the sound of owls in the evening, the ocean breezes on my wide front porch are whispers of love from the Lord our God- a gracious daily reminder that there is still some peace on this Earth. On the subject of my heart’s desires I have been on a tear for the last year baking with fresh ground wheat and would like to expand my outreach. The health benefits are astounding and grounded in Scripture (plus it’s pretty fun to eat cookies that are good from us).

This cookbook would suit my beloved green-eyed, red-haired gourmet mother in law!

Pax et bonum-Amanda

Leslie - December 15, 2011 - 6:24 pm

I’d give this to my wonderful mother in law for Christmas! πŸ™‚

bobi bobbitt - December 15, 2011 - 10:14 pm

Yummy! My dream would be to become a children/family photographer! I have always LOVED photography so it has always been one of those things I wish I would just pursue! (:

Young Christmas fun…

Last night they got all gussied up…

for a night with (might be hard to see as it was snagged with my iPhone!)…

THE PINK PIG!

Gigi and Aunt Reid had the honor of the Pink Pig cruise with the Young kids while Rico Suave and I watched the annual tradition. BECAUSE…if you live in the metro Atlanta area–it’s a tradition to go ride Macy’s Pink Pig EVERY Christmas season. It’s $3 a ticket–and the proceeds go to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. We got a picture made as a family with the pink pig…I’ll have to scan that baby later and share! And the kids picked out pink pig ornaments for our tree afterwards. THEN–we scooted over for pizza in Lenox and then a slumber party at Gigi’s!

TONIGHT–after Loo-bear and I spent an afternoon picking out material (she’s going to design some fun dresses and skirts for her winter wardrobe…way more quality time actually making them together later!), we had dinner and then we loaded the crew up in the car for Christmas lights! AND we think there’s no better way to enjoy lights then to get snuggled up with blankets, pjs, Christmas music, AND…

Starbucks peppermint cake pops!

On our Christmas light tour we passed a hoppin’ neighborhood clubhouse where our Sunday school’s Christmas party was. We, however, didn’t have a babysitter–BUT truly there is no other place that I’d rather be!!! Tomorrow is another big day! I’m meeting with the session speakers for the UPCOMING Created for Care retreat and I think Loo-bear and I will begin her winter wardrobe together behind our sewing machines:). And I’m sure there will as many rounds of pick-up sticks as there was today–my kids are obsessed these days with that game! I know…our house sounds pretty exciting doesn’t it;-)!? Just like I like it:)

Blessings to you this weekend!!!

XOXO!

I have been meaning to come over and leave you a recipe. My little Granny has Celiac disease and we make everything gluten free for her. One of our most favorite recipes is a sweet potato pie casserole and it is fabulous! I take it to everything and no one ever knows it is gluten free and a am asked for the recipe by at least two people each time. I put the recipe on my blog today, so forgive me if I do not type it out a second time. I thought of you this morning as I was making the casserole and once again as I put it on the blog, so God MUST want you to have it! http://smalltownjoy.blogspot.com/2011/12/saturday-top-ten.html

Love reading your blog! Your babies look so sweet in their coordinating outfits!

Jenni - December 11, 2011 - 8:02 am

Your weekends sounds so much like my weekends. Filled with family fun and projects. Between our Jesse tree, family games and traditions, there is no room for parties and other activities;) but that is what I love, time with my little (soon to be bigger) family. And now I have to make a trip to ATL to ride the pig!!!

april - December 11, 2011 - 11:30 pm

Cute pics. Never heard of a pink pig ride haha…cute though! Those cake pops looked yummy and isaac looked adorable in his pjs! ;0) I got my isaac some adorable ones too for christmas!
