The Three Kings…the journey of obedience

I stayed up late last night creating a little outfit my little man to wear in the live nativity at school. Next Friday he will be one of the three kings–he gets to be the Ethiopian king! I had 2 choices in creating a turban. Either I could watch this you tube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7RMH873lR0 (nice, but no thanks) OR I could get out my hot glue gun and hot glue fabric to one of our many Bob the Builder hats. I chose to skip the 7 minute tutorial and use hot glue instead:). I wish you could have seen the look on Parker’s face this morning when I showed him over breakfast this

IMG_7958_1 copy

I told him the clear jewels are diamonds to show his wealth and the white fresh water pearls…are tiger teeth…to show his bravery:). Parker loves when I make things a little more descriptive. (My apologies to any PreK friends who now think the wise men came with tiger teeth to bring their gifts…I mean, you NEVER know;) We had to have this ready for school today so they can practice all next week…but he couldn’t wait to try everything on.

The magi’s top cloak is hand sewn with love from our Wiphan widows! On a side note, if you want to know more about our ministry in Zambia and how you can be a part of life change to widows and orphans this Christmas, check out http://www.wiphan.org/! Didn’t our ladies do a beautiful job with this top! So…our little Magi is the Ethiopian king with a shout out from Zambia!

I tried to get him to take this to carry his gift in…

IMG_7960

Wouldn’t that have been COOL?! BUT, he opted for the more humble container hand carved by our Zambian friend who made this for Laney to keep her jewelry in. By the way, the woodcarver in Zambia is now going to be TEACHING our widows WOODCARVING! And they can sell what they make in the market! YAY! Here is our little Magi’s gift carrier for the nativity…

IMG_7962

It’s funny how the Three Kings keep coming up this season. Have you EVER really sat and listened to the all of the words of the hymn “We Three Kings of Orient Are”?! They are SO powerful. [See all the lyrics here] Talk about worship as the hymn walks you through the symbolism of each gift!!! And for those of you who celebrate St.Nicholas (I confess…we are Santa fans…stone me, roll my yard, send me emails…but we saturate Christmas with the story of Jesus…but we also enjoy the fun of Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and I even try to catch my shadow like Peter Pan for the kids for fun;). OK…back on track…but did you know that St.Nicholas actually paved the way for the hymn “We Three Kings”?! STRANGE…BUT TRUE!

After the War of 1812, Anglicans in America decided to establish their own seminary for training Episcopalian ministers. The school was voted for in 1817 and was put in New York City. Clement Clarke Moore (son of NY’s Episcopalian Bishop) was a landscaper and wrote the poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” His poem made him famous and a sought after worker. To make a long story short, Moore became wealthy, gave his land for the seminary to be built on and became an instructor there of Biblical languages. One of his students John H. Hopkins Jr wrote the hymn “We Three Kings of Orient Are” for a school Christmas pageant in 1857. Isn’t it amazing how all things happen for the glory of God! Without the written words “But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight, Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”…Moore would have never been heard of…he would have never become wealthy…the seminary may not have been built…and this worshipful hymn is actually born out of one of our favorite poems about Christmas. SO COOL! I’m sure Moore was wondering at the time why in the WORLD the Lord wanted him to write a poem about Santa…but look what happened through it!

And that reminds me of the obedience of the wise men. Have you ever wondered how FAR and how long they must have traveled? To the world, I know their journey did NOT make sense? I rarely reflect on their journey and how hard this was…men of stature and looked up to in their society…traveled days, weeks, months…COUNTRIES away to see the baby that had been prophesied about. I wonder how many times they wanted to turn around—how many times they looked at each other and said, “What are we doing?! Are we seriously following a star?!” Yet, they continued to LOOK UP following the star in the east.

Then one day the star finally stopped over where the child was AND THEY WERE FILLED WITH JOY. Then what happened? They bowed down and WORSHIPPED. Faithful obedience will always lead to worship. Always. Why? Because God’s will for YOUR life according to His word is good, pleasing and PERFECT (Romans 12:1-2). Do you feel the Lord calling you to do something? Continue in something? Are you in the middle of a process that just seems crazy to the rest of the world? Do you just some times wonder like the wise men probably did, “Will we ever get there?!” Obedience will always end in worship—because this is HOW GOOD the LORD and HIS WILL for your life is!!!

For those of you on a journey of obedience, reflect and remember the journey of the wisemen this Christmas. It was one of looking UP. Following the Light. Trusting in the Lord. And maintaining hope in what the Lord has called you to. And when days are hard—REMEMBER above everything…that your journey, like the wisemen, will end in worship!!! His plans for you are GOOD, PLEASING and PERFECT…and the One who calls you is faithful, and he will continue to be faithful (1 Thessalonians 5:24)

My friends—I am running this marathon with you—praying for many of you and excited…SO EXCITED…to hear one day your stories of worship!

5th Refrain of “We Three Kings of Orient Are”
Glorious now behold Him arise,
King and God and Sacrifice;
Alleluia, alleluia! Earth to heav’n replies.
O’ star of wonder, star of night,
Star of royal beauty bright;
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect light.

Joy to the World and a Marshmellow TREAT!

IMG_7930 copy

Isn’t he delightful?! This was my Mr.Frosty made of:

* hat – oreo cookie half + mini-reece cup
* eyes and buttons – big round sprinkles (Target)

* mouth – sprinkles
* nose – you’ll never believe this…but dried cheese…it’s called improvision people!
* arms/sticks – pretzels (stick pretzels would be better, but I need the curved ones for Sunday’s craft/snack)
* toothpicks (hold the marshmellows together)* scarf – Fruit Rollup
Here is Mr.Parker’s just at the beginning—I thought he was going to be a robot at first;) (you can see how his toothpicks hold the marshmellows together)
IMG_7934

[if you make these this weekend, go ahead and buy a bag of miniature Reece cups and the loopy pretzels b/c when you see Sunday’s craft you will need these again…and it is WAY cute and you’ll already have these on hand]

We are getting geared up for a really fun weekend! And when I say fun…you are going to be in for a TREAT on Sunday when I post the pictures from our weekend! Yep, we are heading South with our family of 5 (I’m even packing our Jesse Tree to go with us!)—and we’re going to spend the weekend with Richard’s very bestfriends. A handful of crazy guys that are all single and our family will be trecking South to stay in Americus, Georgia at one of the guy’s property. Our kids will be tossed upside down, tickled, chased and worn slap out by Sunday. And I’ll have lots of fun pictures I’m sure! We’ll be scooting back just in time for a visit from SANTA and party in our home on Sunday! I’m so excited to see my Bible study mommas and ALL their families, and we have SANTA himself showing up to celebrate the season with us!

I wish you each a fun filled weekend with your family. Just 2 weeks until Christmas so enjoy every moment of this sweet holiday time with those you love!

JOY TO THE WORLD!

Andrea

And here is his finished frosty…(poor guy got his little chin hurt playing this week! But nothing that Frosty can’t make feel better! They LOVED eating these!!!!

My boys (16 and 13 years old)looked at me like I had three heads when I asked them if they wanted to make chocolate dipped marshmellows with me. They are all about the eating part but want nothing to do with the preparing part of making food. So I solicited my adorable 7 year old nephew who excitedly made the treats with me! Thanks for the recipe:)

Clark and Sarah - December 11, 2009 - 7:59 pm

Loved the cute little marshmellow idea. I will have to try this with my kids.

I just found your blog a few weeks back. We live in the Atlanta area as well and would love to meet up sometime. We brought our daughter home from Ethiopia back in January (almost a year ago, the time really does fly). I look forward to watching your adoption journey as well. It is a beautiful thing.

The good, the bad, the ugly…

OK…so I’m keepin’ it real today. And you’re getting a slice of real life…the good, the bad, the ugly—and just because that’s only 1 positive and 2 negatives…we’re adding “the cute” to that too. The good, the bad, the ugly…and the cute in the Young house:)

The Good
CHRISTMAS CARDS! There is nothing I love more in December than going to our mailbox each day to get our Christmas cards! SO FUN! I’m always stumped for the best way to display them. We’ve done the frig–I mean COVERED our frig ALL sides top to bottom. We’ve done cute little baskets…but they get tossed in and rarely enjoyed. This year I wanted to create something with purpose. I’m using my basket again for families with older kids and I’m putting together a bulletin board for 2010 to put a different set of cards on each week to remember to pray for these families. FOR THE KIDS though…we created my most favorite Christmas decoration yet…not another tree or ornament that has more traditional meaning than the true meaning…but instead we created something to display our little friends to pray for that we can keep up all year (or until the kids tear it down):

4171828875_9d88b3e7ed_b copy

[Notice our little heart in Ethiopia?!]
How appropriate to remember THE WORLD and Jesus’s love for all at Christmas. As we made it, we had an AMAZING talk about the world—the creation of the world…the stars in the sky (they had a BLAST putting the stars on) and ultimately…the world is the reason Jesus came. We wrote the words “Jesus loves the little children of the world” around our world–and we talked about how much Jesus loved each one of these friends as we put them up. I explained to them that THIS is why each of our friends has SUCH GREAT VALUE! Because GOD created them and HE LOVES THEM! And we should treat all of these friends with such love and respect because of our Creator.

We put this world on the door that leads to our garage—really, OUR door TO THE WORLD! I love the feeling that *I* personally have going out of it. Like I am being SENT out into the WORLD! I love the mental picture of sending MY CHILDREN out into the world to love others as Jesus loves them! And as I reach for the doorknob I see these faces and remember that indeed Jesus really does love each of these…AND DEEPLY, PASSIONATELY…SO MUCH HE CAME FOR EACH OF THESE…born in a manger over 2000 years ago for each of these sweet children…and I pray that we can love each of them with His same love!!! Man, talk about a way to exit your home! Talk about one of the best Christmas decorations we could display…THE WORLD!

We’re going to keep these up as long as we can…as long as they stay up with a 1 year old, 4 year old and 5 year old;)…and to make the pictures less seasonal–I trimmed close to the images before popping them up with tape. I knew they would fall with time—so to better secure them I found some fun paperclips and above and below each image I made a tiny little slit with a sharp knife and attached the cards directly to the paper with the paperclips too. They are shimmery paper clips too and fun colors (got those at OfficeMax) By the way, everyone needs a HUGE kraft paper roll–we use ours WEEKLY—you can buy yours here
Love the paper clips though…such a fun shimmery touch:)

THE BAD
Just in case I come across together and like super mom with these crafts–I’m really not. I’m a sinner saved by grace—and I mess up daily. More specifically, I’m a complete slacker when it comes to house cleaning and laundry. I am also really forgetful. (Praise Jesus for sweet, forgiving, patient friends!) And my office is always a complete disaster (unless a friend forewarns me days in advance they are coming over…it’s never tidy). Please know that when I take pictures I usually move a bunch of junk out of the background—and life here is really REAL. I love to blog though because I LOVE to write…it’s a passion of mine. And writing is such a healthy outlet for me. My husband laughs and says my blog readers know me better than most people because I am so open when I write…that’s just how I express myself best. I want my blog though to be an ENCOURAGEMENT to those who read it, to share what we do here just in case it gives other moms ideas too…and I can also appreciate being a stay-at-home mom stuck at home during nap time, needing just to sit and read…and NOT wanting to do laundry (I blog during naps instead of laundry:) I would just fall over backwards if I ever made anyone feel like I’m super mom or perfect. Because I’m far from it!

Yes, that would be a McDonald’s hamburger (sorry Richard–it had to be done!) We zipped by the assisted living today to visit great grandmother—and although it was great to visit her and make the elderly smile—you can’t do it all. And if it means letting the laundry go or going to McDonalds so you can do things like this…IT’S OKAY!!! Some of my sweetest childhood memories were at McDonalds;)…stacking those boxes at birthday parties:)

And I even let my baby some times play with swords…isn’t he cute:)

THE UGLY
I had to think of something ugly to share…and this is what is most ugly right now in ouu home!

FRUIT FLIES.

Oh my goodness I just have to say that I hate fruit flies. I’m so proud of myself though because after a week of craziness and attempts to kill them all, I discovered a way to finally be rid of them. Of course put all your fruit in the frig first–but if simple tricks like that don’t help–here’s my 911 tactic that wipes them out forever and fast!
*1 cup of raspberry vinegarette (something sweet and vinegar scent lures them) in a disposable cup
*Put a tablespoon of dishwashing detergent in and stir (makes them sink..yes I’m drowing my fruit flies)
*Cover tightly with seran wrap and poke holes with fork

4172584660_885b8faae5_m
See those little black dots in the cup?!…poor guys!
THEN pour this

4171829281_9fe0ce8f5f_m

down any kitchen drains and let it sit (better to do at night when you won’t need to run water)
WA-LA! They are finally gone. YUCK…that really is ugly isn’t it?! But the holidays when you have lots of fruit baskets and sweets is prime time for those little boogers.

AND THE CUTE

Wishing you a great weekend! XOXO!

Andrea

Andrea, you are a remarkable momma ! I feel blest that our paths have been woven by the Jesse Tree. Sister and I keep praying that during the days of waiting for your son- you and your family know that others are lifting you in prayer for the timing to be perfect…God is in complete control and He will not let that sweet "babe of your Heart"wait too long to be in your ams…he is already in ya'lls hearts ! Your ministry is powerful…helping others with family ideas and life is amazing…May the Peace of Jesus be with all of you !

[…] I’m always thinking of different ways to display our Christmas cards. Last year–we did this (it was completely FULL by Christmas and it was even hard to take down because we just LOVED seeing […]

God’s purpose for us is greater than we could ever imagine!

In my procrastination to finish up the last few sessions I have to edit to finish up my photography business (for those of you who don’t know I have a photography business www.georgialane.com), I have been dreaming. It’s something I do often especially during our adoption wait:). What is our REAL purpose? What is God’s bigger plan for our adoption? What if we find out our baby’s birth mother is still living, loves our son TREMENDOUSLY but just can’t do it? What will we do with that Lord? What is God’s bigger plan in this? What will we do with the information the Lord lays before us–and how will we accept the challenge He puts on our hearts whatever that may be? I truly believe that the Lord has called us to adoption, but I also believe He has a really big plan and purpose—greater than we could ever imagine. And it’s not even that important that I know what it is…but what really matters is that we are opening up our hands to say HERE I AM LORD–USE ME. Whatever. Whenever. However.

Take a minute listen to Michael McLean’s songs on my playlist today. And if you are adopting–close your eyes (they are at the very end of my playlist)…listen to the words—and my prayer is that you would join me in opening your hands and saying HERE I AM LORD—USE ME in your adoption. Whatever YOUR purpose. I believe in all things YOU have a plan. You are always on time. Your plans are perfect. Protect our journey from ourselves—may it only be YOUR hand Lord that touches each step. Give us courage Lord to do whatever You ask us to do. Give us patience Lord to wait on You. Open our ears so we can hear your voice and what you ask of us. Give us strength to say the words you want us to say…to whoever you want us to say them to. Help us to love, to serve and to allow YOU to work through us.

This song “Something Perfect” makes me think of our birth mother—and our potentially getting to meet her. Among the heartache and pain of having to let your baby go because of difficult circumstances…there is something perfect happening here. If we don’t get to meet her because she has passed away—even in the mourning of death–there will be a new MORNING…a new day…when we hold our baby for the first time…it will be closing one door and opening another giving our baby a forever family…there will be something perfect happening in that moment. Even in our trials and sadness, there is something perfect happening when we have trusted the Lord as our Savior. He has a plan. When we are waiting and it doesn’t make sense, there is something perfect happening. Listen to this song again and let it minister to you as you trust in the Lord’s perfect plan.

And to our SWEET child that will one day read this journey…I have NO doubt that your birth mother loved you TREMENDOUSLY. Her sacrifice was one of great love, pain and hope. We will never forget her, and she will always be loved in our home. Just as Jechebed had to let Moses go so he might live–she had to do the same. My prayer is that God would use you greatly to impact our world…and that I would be a brave mommy and keep my hands open to the Lord’s calling on not only my life–but yours too. I love you my son. You can do ANYTHING through Christ who gives you strength!

And let our service, sacrifice and love to orphans not stop with our adoptions of our sons and daughters. Bring us opportunity Lord to continuously invest in the lives of YOUR children that are in NEED…NEED of YOU…NEED of believers to be YOUR HANDS AND FEET…help us to live outside of our culture—to live radically for You Jesus. Help us to love the children you have already placed in our care with Your love. Help us to live frugal lives so we may impart the blessings You have given us and share it with others. And protect us Lord from getting too caught up in our own stories, our own circumstances, our own wait, our own blessings that we miss THE PURPOSE that YOU orchestrated for us to persue and follow through. Let us run the race with perserverance!!!

Once again I am so blessed by your thoughts. Thank you so much for sharing.

We have been doing our Jesse tree with the kids and I noticed in so many passages we have read, that the persons response is "here am I Lord". We need to do the same. Use me in any way you see fit.

What time is it? + How to make your blogger pictures bigger

It’s POPPY DIP TIME! Just ordered 4 Poppy Dips and here is the first that arrived yesterday! I couldn’t STAND not to put my girl in one this morning. OK…so be quick because she is taking a holiday break starting next Tuesday…if you want one—zip over to http://itspoppydipblog.blogspot.com/ and put your order in. And feel good too—the proceeds go toward this sweet family’s adoption! What could be better than a cute dress and sweet proceeds!

4169479230_d1d375061a_b copy

Like that BIG picture?! Yep…I love to see my images GINORMOUS! And I’ve had several folks ask how to make their blogger images larger. Here’s my trick:

1. Do NOT upload your images through blogger—they automatically resize them for you.
2. Store your images through an outside source (I use www.flickr.com). Copy and paste them in the “edit html” writing mode instead.
3. After you open an account at flickr, upload the image/s you want to use on your blog.
4. Click on the “all sizes” view on the top of image in Flickr
5. Choose the size you want. I normally choose medium, however the image above is large.
6. Look under the image at the script that prompts you to copy and paste the html. Highlight the html script and copy using the right clicker on your mouse.
7. Go to your blog post and paste the script where you want your image to appear in the html mode.
8. You can preview to be sure it worked:)
9. Want your images centered? You will have to do this EACH time. Go directly in front of the html photo code and put this WITHOUT spaces before and after the word center (I had to put spaces so you could see it b/c together it will not be visible b/c of html code) < center >
THEN–go the end of the html code to close it out and write again without spaces: < /center >
That should do it! Now try it out and send me your blog so I can see your large beautimus images! COOL, huh?!

Have a great Tuesday…now go buy your baby girls or a sweet one in your life a Poppy Dip!
