Christmas in Zambia… (join our sponsorship program…and a t-shirt is on me!)

As I sit in my home this Christmas Day enjoying the sound of my children running around celebrating their new toys, time with family and full bellies, I want to remember our widows and orphans in Zambia…as well as all the orphans and widows of the world. How can we live differently in 2010 with our abundant provision to sacrifice and pour into the lives of widow and orphans? How can we change the way we spend and save to pour more into those who need someone to remember them? Whose responsibility is it to stand in the gap anyway? My prayer is that I would SLOW DOWN in 2010 to reflect MORE and remember OFTEN those who don’t have mommies and daddies to remember and provide for their daily needs. My prayer is that God would raise up families to stand in the gap and sponsor children through organizations like Wiphan (if you haven’t before, check out our sponsorship and donation needs on the Wiphan website and consider sponsoring one of our precious orphans for 2010!) My prayer is that God will open hearts and homes to welcome another child into their fmaily through the miracle of adoption! That families will join us in the movement saying, “One less orphan!” As you enjoy this Christmas day with your sweet gifts from God…join with me in remembering the orphans and trying to picture what today is like for our orphans and widows in Zambia…

An update from Wiphan Care Ministries (www.wiphan.org) how our sweet widows and orphans spend Christmas: DSC_5908
Merry Christmas from all of us at Wiphan!!

We recently asked Kunda, founder and vision carrier of Wiphan, what Christmas was like in Zambia and what it was like for the widows and orphans that Wiphan ministers to. When we received her response we were overwhelmed, and we thought we would share it with all of you, our Wiphan supporters. As we celebrate Christmas here in the US, please keep our widows and orphans in your thoughts and prayers as they also celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ 12,000 miles away.

This is how Kunda describes Christmas in Zambia for she and her family as well as how our orphans and widows will experience this day…

WHAT IS CHRISTMAS TO A ZAMBIAN?
Christmas day to a Zambian means the day THE SAVIOR, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, WAS BORN. For Christians, Christmas is a very special day when the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ is celebrated and greatly appreciated. Zambia, being a Christian nation,Christmas day is a public holiday and most Zambians go to church on Christmas because we do have a church service similar to the usual Sunday service which would be from 9.00hrs to 12.00hrs. The service is centered on the STORY OF THE BIRTH OF THE MESSIAH. The pastor usually preaches on how Jesus Christ was born, why He was born, His death and resurrection.

HOLY COMMUNION also takes place on Christmas and thereafter, people are free to go back home but they are expected to go back to church from 17.00hrs to 18.00 hrs, for a CANDLE-LIGHT SERVICE AND CHRISTMAS CAROLS ARE SUNG.

After attending a church service, people are free to join friends elsewhere and continue celebrating Christmas. Some people (those who can afford) do have simple family gatherings, invite friends and just celebrate Christmas together. A few people (those who can afford) buy and exchange gifts but the majority don’t do that because they can’t afford.

CHRISTMAS FOR AN ORPHAN AND WIDOW IN THE COMPOUND.
Christmas for an orphan and widow, is a very special day when an orphan or widow thinks of bathing to look presentable and wear a clean set of clothes they probably washed the previous day. They also attend the church service within their area where they are told the story and birth of Jesus the Messiah. After the church service, they return home and have a very special meal, most likely something they haven’t eaten in a long time like chicken or meat – this happens because these families live under a dollar a day so on a daily basis they can only afford caterpillars, small fishes called kapenta, beans and vegetables. So most widows make sure they find piece-work (part time work) and work hard, early December to try and gain K25,000 (this is equivalent to 5 Dollars) to enable them buy chicken and have a delightful meal on the day.

Sadly, if the widow fails completely to find some piece-work and has no money to serve for Christmas, she would then take her children to go into the bush, find fields to hunt for RATS. When rats are caught, they are cooked and eaten with nshima and that can be VERY SPECIAL FOR A WIDOW AND ORPHAN. Rats also make a very memorable meal for orphans and widows.

Praise be to God, for Wiphan supporters, for the meals provided to the orphans at Wiphan. Wiphan orphans will enjoy a very nice meal with soya-chunks on Christmas day. Once again a million thanks for food provided to orphans at Wiphan and the mealie -meal widows and care-givers receive on a monthly basis. Hunger has been lifted off from the homes of widows that come to Wiphan centers. Wiphan-Zambia will remain grateful for the HUNGER-RELIEF PROGRAM THAT HAS BEEN IN EXISTANCE FOR THE PAST TWO AND HALF YEARS NOW. GOD RICHLY BLESS YOU WIPHAN SUPPORTERS FOR CONTRIBUTING TO SUCH A NOBLE CAUSE.

GOD RICHLY BLESS YOU ALL. SHALOM AND ENJOY YOUR CHRISTMAS.

Kunda Tumelo

AND…GUESS WHAT?! I wrote the WRONG number for monthly sponsorships in an earlier post! It is ONLY $39 a month to sponsor one of our sweet orphans!!! We have board members taking a trip over the first of March–so if you sponsor now, you can start writing letters to your child and putting pictures together so he/she can get to know their sponsorship family!!! Be sure to check out www.wiphan.org! Check out the t-shirts…and share with your friends and family Wiphan as you wear them…and you can buy coffee too to help support the ministry! There are 2 t-shirts—so check both of them out…but this one has very special meaning to me…
wiphan-ukwampana-shirt-front
Here’s the meaning behind the t: In bemba, the native language spoken at Wiphan, Ukwampana means “help one another.” This t-shirt also features one of Wiphan’s own students as well as gives a glimpse of the vision carrier behind Wiphan…our dear Kunda. The profits from this trendy tee will feed and educate one orphan for a month. For EVERY sponsorship through my blog I am sending YOU a FREE t-shirt! You see, each board family had a goal to raise up 20 sponsors…and the crazy Young family has been so crazy with adoption stuff this Fall that we are a little behind! How cool would it be to to meet our goal by New Year’s! I’d LOVE for us to run out of kids to sponser…which means we’d get to pull in that many more kids to join our sponsorship program (We wait until all of our current kids are sponsored before pulling in more for the program) YOU CAN ONLY IMAGINE how important and special this makes each child feel!!!!! If your family makes the leap of faith to be a part of this INCREDIBLE ministry and BLESS a child in this way…PLEASE let me know personally that you joined our Wiphan team AND what size t-shirt you want…and I’ll be sending one YOUR way. For those of you who have or are in the process of adopting…you know how endeared you are to those who have supported your adoption financially??? Well, we feel the SAME WAY about those who join us to make a difference in Wiphan!!! Our sponsers are being a part of LIFE CHANGE!!!

And when folks ask about your shirt you can tell them all about your sweet child…and how THEY TOO can join Wiphan Care by sponsoring a child!

First steps to my “Year in Review”

Mommying is my job. Yes–I’m a photographer…but my first job is and always has been–MOM. This past year, having a 3rd baby in our family, I really began to feel my 2nd job (photographer) start to creep into how I did my first job (mommy)…so it was time to close down job #2 (photographer) for awhile and focus only on job #1 (mommy). We, as mommies, have a HUGE task and role as we raise the children God has trusted into our care. So, as with any job–I like to always reflect on the year’s past–and most importantly to plan strategically for the year ahead. Of course in the year ahead, we’ll be adding #4–but for now we have 3–Parker, Laney and Frank…so that’s where my focus must be. I try to REALLY think and LIST their current areas of strengths and weaknesses–and this helps me think strategically about what *I* can do to help their gifts shine—their weaknesses be stronger…and more than anything it helps my lack of patience as I am more mentally prepared to deal with the weaknesses. I begin to stop tossing things off as “terrible 2’s” or just being kids—and I have a “go to board” that Richard and I have discussed and planned for when we see issues arise. Doing this also reminds me to appropriately encourage and praise when we see strengths come out (YAY!) or growth throughout the new year (SUPER YAY!). When I list what their weaknesses are, a light often comes on–and I realize that some times their weaknesses are a fruit of something that has been lacking in our home and parenting in the past. This activity offers such HOPE for the year ahead–and it gives me PRAYER REQUESTS to daily submit to the Lord on my children’s behalf.

Love it!!!! Sounds great, and you are sooo right on 🙂

Merry Christmas!

here is a sweet song my heart is singing this Christmas! It’s about a China adoption—but my heart is still singing it to our baby who we can’t WAIT to have in our arms in 2010!!! I just love this song–and to make it even more special it’s performed/sung by some dear friends of our family. (Be sure to turn off the music at the bottom of the page before playing so you can enjoy every word!)

I love the thought that THIS TIME NEXT YEAR our baby will have been home with us for awhile. EVERYTHING will look different…the table, the stockings, the noise level;), the laughter…I am so excited for everything 2010 will bring for our family—but I sure am LONGING for our baby this Christmas! Please pray for all the birthmoms in the world who have acted in bravery…choosing to give LIFE to their baby…and choosing adoption when they had no other choice…please pray for the babies out there who are hungry and homeless—as you hear your children’s laughter PRAISE GOD…and forget not those who are hungry and cold this Christmas…and in thanksgiving HOLD the sweet children the Lord has given you already a little TIGHTER! Pray for the children stuck on waiting lists that the Lord in 2010 would RAISE UP mommies and daddies to BOLDLY say “Lord, my heart and home are open for YOUR glory! USE ME.” I am PRAISING GOD this Christmas that He opened our family’s eyes, our hearts and our home. Our lives and hearts are ALREADY CHANGED…FULL OF MORE JOY…our children are more thankful, more compassionate, more merciful…MORE LIKE CHRIST…and this is a BLESSING from the Lord I KNOW for our obedience in following Him in taking care of the orphans…and making just one of them OUR CHILD! One less without parents. One less without a home. One less orphan in the world. And the MIRACLE…is that I already feel DEEPLY for him!!! Thank you Lord for the miracle you do in the hearts of those you call! I feel like I am living a DREAM COME TRUE! And to think…this is so much greater, grander and glorious than the white picket fence life I once thought about. HELP US LIVE FOR YOUR GLORY LORD IN 2010!

Merry Christmas sweet friends, family and blog readers! It is my hope and prayer in 2010 that I would get the blessing of hearing from some of my blog readers that they too are joining us on the adoption journey! It is a WILD ride—but one of the most amazing ones I’ve yet to be on!

XXXXXXX!

KID FUN

This is how we spent our day yesterday…

IMG_8468 copy

Aren’t these two just about the cutest you’ve ever seen?! They are just 14 months apart…Irish twins…and they are bestbuds. We went to a cookie party at Aunt April’s house–and Aunt April knows how to throw a party. She had Miss Gail http://www.missgailmusic.com/ for entertainment pre-cookie decorating. And the kids had SO much fun. Laney are Parker were so funny wanting to SHARE a drum instead of have one of their own. I just love their sweet friendship!!! Ok…so here’s a little taste of our morning with Miss Gail…(warning…turn off music at the bottom of the page before attempting to understand what she’s singin’!)

HOW FUN IS SHE?! I think I may have missed my calling! If only I could play the guitar AND sing…this would be my vote for a job! TOO FUN! Poor Frank slept the ENTIRE show upstairs in the nursery!
After our mini-concert…we scooting upstairs for crafts, cookie decorating and lunch. Here’s my big man about to start a craft…
IMG_8481 copy
Next came the cookie decorating. The crowd was small and sweet. And my kids and my nieces did a good job being sweet…but the MINUTE the crowd left—our kids did what our kids do best TOGETHER…and got…well, silly like their mommas…
IMG_8550 copy
Down it girls!!! You don’t get this opportunity every day…so they went for it…and just HAPPENED to hear giggles and ran around the corner and THEY WERE CAUGHT!

ADULT SNACK

Guess what I finally made for the first time in my life tonight?! CHEESE STRAWS!!! YUM! If you aren’t from the South–you may have never heard of them. But…they are a must holiday snack! I used the recipe of my high school friend Tatum…but you can see Paula Dean’s recipe here: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/zesty-cheese-straws-recipe/index.html I like mine with a little more cayenne pepper though! You can use a manual cookie press for these as they no longer make the electric SuperShooters—or you can do like me and buy one off ebay! Never heard of a super shooter?? They were made in the 80’s and they look like this…

IMG_8571

You just stuff as much of the mixture as you can in this bad boy and then you let it go to town–making rows of the cheese mixture like this…

IMG_8573

You divide in bite sizes with a butter knife before cooking—and this yummy treat only takes 10 minutes to cook in an oven on 350. Just let ’em cool on cookie sheets…

IMG_8574

I doubled the recipe and made A TON. They store best if you put a paper towel between each row stacking them until each container is full. Doubling the batch made almost 4 containers.

IMG_8576

Now I have a fun little appetizer and munchy to pull out all week for guests! YUM. These are HIGHLY addictive AND the kids LOVE them!

And without Frankie-poo making the post…I should show you his new trick—can you see his little head shake?! Poor guy is TORTURED by his older siblings isn’t he?!

Finally…my 2 cents on watermarking…
I have had several folks ask me about watermarking and how I put the watermark on the pictures of my kids. WHICH, by the way, I can’t stress or recommend ENOUGH! I created an action that I could just click one time every time I opened up an image by following this tutorial to make mine. I like the embossed watermark so you can still see the entire image. If you don’t have photoshop or know how to use it–you can use this. If you choose to put your pictures out there without protection…just don’t be sad when you visit another country and you see this. Honestly, though–that would be best case scenerio…being a photographer I have seen some sad and sick things happen with pictures—so protect yours and protect your children by watermarking all of your images. And save yourself the stress and heartache by protecting your pictures in the beginning. Now if you trust your Facebook friends and you have private settings on, I wouldn’t fret about watermarking there–but if your blog isn’t private and any random Joe can visit, well, then any random Joe can copy your pictures too. And who knows—maybe you will get really good with that new camera and lens you are getting for Christmas;)…and once your images get better…I stress watermarking EVEN more! Just my 2 cents—take them for what they are worth. If you have a more user friendly way of watermarking your images for those who aren’t photoshop savy—please leave it in the comments below!

Now…try to sing Miss Gail’s name song to your kids tomorrow;). Have a great 23rd (just 2 days before Christmas)!

XOXO,

Andrea

Christmas = Sacrifice (but does it mean the same thing in our culture?)

4x6 copy

What does Christmas mean to you? I mean–really…what do you think of? Some things that immediately come to my mind when I think of the WORD Christmas…Jesus, lights, gifts…Christmas trees, cookies, carols…sweet time with family and friends…elves, Santa, reindeer…Macy’s, traffic, shopping. But really–what is Christmas all about to you? How we spend it–what we fill it with…the fruit of how we spend our days will speak for us. What does the preparation of Christmas look like? Christmas Eve? Christmas day? How are our HEARTS different and changed by how we spend it??? Oh how I wish I could say–it’s all about and only about Jesus here in my home. How I want it to be all about Jesus for both me and my family. But, I too, get side-tracked too often.  BUT…really, looking back at my list–the ONLY thing that Christmas is about is Jesus. And HIS sacrifice. Maybe the Lord would want us to let some of these other things go a bit to let Jesus shine even more. Of course there is nothing wrong with these things–until they side track us or take any focus off the real thing. And one sure way to let Jesus shine more is to follow Him this season in what He showed us Christmas was all about when He came…one word says it all–sacrifice.

In the old testament, when God’s people sinned and needed to ask for forgiveness–they would bring a sacrifical lamb as a sin offering to cover their sin. It was some what of a payment/sacrifice for their sin. In Leviticus 4–instruction is given to bring a sacrificial female lamb without blemish. God wanted His people to bring the BEST, most treasured lamb–one that would actually be the BIGGEST SACRIFICE for them to part with. God also made His greatest sacrifice when He parted with His only Son. When you hear Jesus referred to as the sacrificial lamb–this is what it is referring to. So, it only makes sense that Christmas should really be more about sacrifice than any other thing. Sacrifice was the creation of Christmas! Yet, our culture makes it so much more about getting and giving in abundance to one another (especially to our children). Sure, we are sacrificing a bit when we hit the malls and shop for our family. It’s definitely money out of our pockets. But is it a sacrifice? Let alone compare it to the sacrifice our Lord made when He sent Jesus. YET–I think there would be nothing more pure, more honoring…sweeter…than to follow the Lord during this season in making a sacrifice in His name…for His glory…so that the world may know and be blessed through Him.

The kings sacrified their year traveling by foot to bring Him gifts (yes…did you know the journey required almost a YEAR’S TIME!). Joseph sacrificied his pride by marrying a women who appeared to be pregnant out of wedlock. Mary sacrificed her reputation and an opportunity to live a “normal” life…but willingly she followed. God sacrificed HIS ONLY SON…all the while knowing that in 33 years He would stand back, turn His face while His son was beaten and mocked–and His sacrifice is one of pain and heartache…and while many watched in amazement at the birth—God knew what this sacrifice would mean. The sacrificial lamb had come, so that we would have the opportunity to pray to God and have a personal relationship with him. And this—is really what happened at Christmas. It was sprinkled with pain, shame and…poured in sacrifice.  This Christmas, my heart is being called to give sacrificially rather than out of comfort. Sure—I’ve got the presents under the tree and made “the list” a long time ago…but my heart is calling me deeper into what Christmas is REALLY about. And it’s not too late to come to the alter the way the Lord paved the way for us to this Christmas. After all–I think this is how the Christmas story really goes. There wasn’t much “comfort” in God’s letting Jesus come to the world. There wasn’t much comfort in Mary’s journey to get Him here. And there was little comfort in His life. And I’m really not sure how much comfort should be in mine…although our culture tells us we deserve it and we work hard for it. YET…most of the world doesn’t live the way we do. Why does the rest of the world deserve any less than we do? How can we sacrifice some our comfort to bless those in the world who are without? Will we really stop our busy, busy, busy to really—REALLY—sacrifice this Christmas? Will we take on a inkling of Mary’s bravery and say use me Lord? Will we have the perserverance of the wise men–to follow throughout the year…no matter how tired or weary we become? Can we let go of the “kingdoms” we have created in our own lives to willingly follow no matter the cost? Will we, like Joseph, die to our pride when others question our sacrifice and even say no to some things so we can SLOW down and BE AVAILABLE no matter the cost?

9x12 copy

I wanted to take just a minute to share an amazing, sweet and sacrificial opportunity with you. Almost three years ago, we had a God moment where we ran into a friend who knew of a need in Zambia. There were hundreds of orphans without food, an education and care. We were able to join our friend along with a handful of other couples and start a non-profit to help this sweet community. Three years later, we have two schools, 400 orphans attending and 150 widows attending our program. These children are now attending school and eating a daily meal—AS YOU ARE READING THIS—these sweet children are sleeping…and each day when they go to school they are now loved on by a teacher…possibly the only mother figure role-model in their lives AND they are hearing the gospel. JUST this past Spring, we started our sponsorship program—and we are in need of families to join us and sponsor these sweet children. It is a sacrifice of $50 a month–and some of your sweet time as you write letters to your child and pour into him…letting him/her know that they have a family in the states that loves and prays for him. Because Zambia is some what of a closed country, these orphans will remain in Zambia–but because of Wiphan…they have a chance to grow, learn and make a living to support their family one day! YOU may be the only family they ever have from afar…but believe me…they WILL FEEL YOUR LOVE…and they will be SO THANKFUL AND PROUD to have you as a part of their sweet lives!!! And even cooler—one day you can even go hug them, visit them and let them know you never stopping praying for them!!! This is just ONE of the MANY ways to make a sacrfice for another this Christmas. Another need is giving to the general fund to help with daily needs—or the travel fun to help board members go over to help run the ministry. SO many ways we need others to join us— http://www.wiphan.org/

How sweet are these precious little eyes?! This image continues to pull my mommy heart. Would you join me in prayerfully considering joining us in sacrificing on behalf of the orphan and widow this Christmas?

DSC_6096 bw copy

My prayer today is that the Lord would help me to better understand what His desire is for Christmas. How does HE want to be glorified this season? How does HE want the world to be empacted today through remembering the sacrfice He made? OH LORD—let us like Mary say OKAY…I will do it. Open our hands Lord—open our hearts…and use us for YOUR GLORY.
