What about me?

James 1:27 says “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

Sitting on the dirty, dry clay ground—my heart was full. Children fighting over my lap. Pouring into these precious children that we have loved so filled my heart–there was no other place in that moment I would rather be. I even forgot about “my own” back home as I loved them. I longed to bring them all home…or to pick up my family and come here forever…as if that could fix the years of poverty and pain…who do I think I am anyway? As I sat longer—I saw little pain. Happiness, joy and freedom seem to be alive here. I heard more joy in their laughter than the children in my own country. And it hit me. They were exactly where they needed to be. A world of materialism, different language and culture wouldn’t make their worlds any better. Maybe worse. These precious dirty-foot children had the face of need, but need that could so easily be met if James 1:27 be put into true action. What were we called to do…REALLY?

As the children braided my hair and fought over my hands—the widow, stood back and watched. Suddenly, the laughter seemed foggy and it was as if I could read her mind. I died to my own selfishness of wanting to sit and let those children fill my cup, and I looked at the widow peaking around the corner. Her eyes cried out, “What about me?”

DSC_6036

Looking into her eyes—even with a language barrier I could clearly read her heart. “I want to love these children like you do,” she said. “But I can’t. My children can’t be attached to me because I don’t know what tomorrow brings. I will spend my day begging for food, and at night I’ll come back to them and hope to bring something to fill their bellies. I love them like you do. I love them more than you do. You come and love on our children, but what about me?”

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

“What IF…you poured into me? What if you invested into me? Your hugs and games and laughter are good—but when you leave—we are still here. And so are they. What if you taught me to sew? And I was able to earn money instead of beg…and I could teach them…and they too could have a future and a hope? What if I was able to make enough money to feed more–and feed the other 6 children I have opened my home to? What if by pouring your hearts and resources into the widows, we could be the ones to care for the orphans and minister to the pour around us?”

“Like you…we want to make a difference…”

“Like you…we want to life a full life…to be filled with hope and to be able to provide for our children…”

“I know the orphan may be easier to minister to…but if you will believe in me and love me–I can minister to them TOO…and when you go—I’ll still be here…”
DSC_6019
“Just think–what WE could do…if YOU poured into US! Because, like you–we also love our babies. And we long to be able to love them too…”

“You may have heard the numbers—how many of them there are…but it is US who are here to care for them every day…”

“Some of us long to sew—others to cook—some to teach…and if you will visit us—pour into us—and take a chance with us…we JUST MIGHT…be the ones who can make the difference for them…”

“Will you pray about pouring into us?”

WIPHAN CARE MINISTRIES – WIdows + orPHANs

Visiting the orphan and widow in their distress, isn’t always easy. But it is the calling for the believer. We are to visit the orphan and widow in their hardship, and give to the poor. What would it look like if we began pouring into the widow, relieving her distress, and empowering HER to serve the children around her? What would it look like if we enabled HER to do ministry and fill her longing to see the children she has loved so greatly around her provided for through her labor? What would it look like if she was given the opportunity to learn and to see that she is able to make change in her world? Does she know she is loved? Does she know the Creator of the Universe wants her heart? How are we loving and pouring into those that are most capable and available to love the least of these? The opportunity to make a difference has always been right there before us. The founder of our organization said to me today, “No one would want to adopt a widow and provide for her…but what IF…”

What if??? Are you in? Would you consider joining us? We believe this is the year to pour into the widows of Wiphan–and it is our hope that others will not only join us—but will even join us to learn how they, too, might start something just like Wiphan in other places througout the world. Maybe serving the orphan—really means serving the widow who can care for the orphan. James 1:27 is often recited over and over for orphan ministries and people with a heart to care for them—but let us not miss the other half…how will we visit and care for the widow in her distress? There is a reason she is there in that verse—and a reason the Lord has her there with the orphan. Open our hands Lord and lead us to follow you—break our heart for what breaks yours.

Loved this post! What a totally different perspective to look at the widows in this way. How helpless they must feel. I have been so focused on orphans, I forgot, or really did not know about the widows. Thanks for enlightening me!:) It totally hit me for the first time. Your post made me completely sympathize with them. I want to buy a t-shirt. I will look on your site to find out how to do it! Hopefully we can catch up soon! ๐Ÿ™‚

Oddly enough, just this morning, my husband and I found ourselves sitting in some random parking lot talking about this very issue. This has been so heavy on our hearts lately. AND that was our decision this morning…we have no business adopting (I don’t mean that to sound harsh; it only expresses this strange feeling I’ve had in my gut since we started our adoption and I was told that we might be referred a baby who still has a parent) unless we’re also fighting to keep families together in the first place. We’re totally in…

Sara - February 28, 2010 - 11:13 pm

This very issue has been weighing heavily on my heart lately. I wrote a post about it, but wasn’t brave enough to publish it. Yours doesn’t sound harsh like mine does. ๐Ÿ™‚ I would like to be a part of something like this….

Catchin’ up on reading! (One Year Bible Study)

So thankful for Sundays! A day of rest and renewal…and after arriving home last night back from Kentucky…I sure needed it! We were busier than we anticipated being at the conference leaving no time for blogging the One Year Bible Reading. Catching up this beautiful Sunday afternoon though!

Thursday’s Reading: Levitus 25:24-26:46

Leviticus 25 offers hope to the poor and enslaved. Those who have to sell their land will have it returned to them during the Year of Jubilee…and the slave’s family was also offered freedom during that year. This is one of those chapters that can be harder for us to read and understand because of the society differences regarding their laws—for me particularly slavery. However, the Lord even protects the slaves here by offering them protection from being mistreated and hope for freedom.

Leviticus 26 – The Lord will bless those who follow His ways and obey His commands, but will punish those who disobey. Check out how many times the word IF appears in this chapter. It’s one of the shortest but most important words in the English language…and in this chapter it would change everything were it eliminated. In our relationship with the Lord, “if” carries much weight.

Friday’s Reading: Leviticus 27:1-34; Numbers 1:1-54

Leviticus 27 -Redemption of Gifts Offered to the Lord – Worshippers would come and offer gifts to the Lord–but some times they would want to subsitute money for something that was given as a dedication to the Lord—a person, an animal, or a piece of property. Because their were plenty of Levites, it was assumed if you wanted to dedicate your son to the Lord–you would instead give the money that he would be worth–not based on worth as a person but rather on how much work he could have done at the temple.

This chapter ends Leviticus for us and while we would think it would end with words of God’s glory–it ends instead with a reminder to keep the commitments we make to the Lord. Do not forget about the commitments you make to the Lord—be faithful to Him as He has always been faithful to you.

Numbers 1 – The Lord tells Moses to register the people – Israel’s troops. Every man over 20 was registered except for the Levites as they were in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant.

Saturday’s Reading: Numbers 2:1-3:51

Numbers 2 – Organization of Israel’s Camp – This chapter lays out the camp organization…reminding me that our God is a god of order and not confusion.

Numbers 3 – This first part of this chapter appoints the Levites for service, the second part registers and counts the Levites and the third part shows how the Levites stand as redemption for the firstborn males of the Israelites. The Levites were set apart for the Lored in their place.

Sunday’s Reading – Numbers 4:1-5:31

Numbers 4 -Duties of the three seperate clans of the Levites are given in this chapter. The Kohathite clan (2,750 men) were responsible for the most holy, sacred objects at the Tabernacle. The Gershonite clan (2,630 men) were in charge of the general service and carrying loads, and the Merarite clan’s (3,200 men)only duty was carrying the actual load. The packing up the Tablernacle is CAREFULLY spelled out for the Kohathites as took down, wrapped and packaged for the moving of the sacred items–and they were instructed to never look at the sacred objects or they would die.

Numbers 5– This chapter starts out stressing the importance of purity in Israel’s camp. Chapters like this bring more power to the stories of the New Testament…like the story of the good Samaritan. You can see why even a priest might walk on the other side of the road and not stop had he focused too much on the purity in Israel’s camp—but the Lord is even compassionate for those who were left behind. And He sent Jesus to redeem them.

And the rest of this chapter…wow. That is all I have to say. I am all for faithfulness—and the Lord definitely lays down how He feels about unfaithfulness here. There is nothing recorded in scripture that this was followed through here…but maybe this was enough to keep unfaithfulness from regularly happening. Although there are some questions with this ritual for dealing with unfaithfulness, let’s not miss the message—faithfulness in marrage is important to God.

YAY!!! Doesn’t it feel SOOOO good when you are doing a reading plan to read through the Bible and you catch up on a sweet Sunday afternoon!!! I’m so excited to share some things this week I absorbed this weekend from the conference. I think though the things I learned most weren’t in the actual conference though but stepping back in the “in betweens”. Can’t wait to share!

AND…if you haven’t heard David Platt preach on his heart for the poor…YOU MUST! I recommend checking out his teaching here: http://www.brookhills.org/media and let those weekly teachings rock your face off. I totally dig his heart for the poor, the world and living radically for the gospel. Loved hearing him preach this weekend at the Adopting for Life conference!

Let us not give up on the reading of God’s Word! If you are trying to read through with us this year and you’ve fallen behind…do that Bible reading marathon to catch up! It’s going to be a great…even RADICAL year reading the gospel and applying it NOW to our life!

Adopting for Life…Wiphan exhibit sneak peak!

Well…WE MADE IT! Funny story—we left Atlanta at 3pm…mini-van full of kids, sweet babysitter Caitlin, Addie and me (2 of the Wiphan wives)! Hubbys left after work at 5pm. Guess what? We arrived at the same time in Lousiville. Don’t ask;). Let’s just say Addie, Caitlin and I are all chatty Cathy’s…and we were in Lexington instead of Louisville before you know it. We almost ran out of gas too, which gave our children a really fun experience of writing on windows in the van because of the humidity (we had the air turned off to save every drop of gas and we prayed our way into the gas station in the middle of no where)…and we also drove in a blizzard. Good times! But we are all here, safe and among GREAT fellowship!!!

Here’s a sneak peak of our Wiphan exhibit…conference 017 - Copy (2)

Adopting for Life Conference…

adopting-for-life-banner
And we’reeeeeeeee off! We’ll spend the next several days representing Wiphan at the Adopting for Life Conference in Kentucky. You know…if you have a heart for adoption, you’ve adopted, you’re considering adoption, you’d like to get plugged into an orphan ministry or you’d like to learn how to start an orphan ministry in your church…it’s not too late for a road trip;).

OR…maybe for you it is…OR it’s just too far. So, I’d love to hear which of the Break-Outs you wish you could attend IF you could go. If you could pick one session for me to attend, get the low-down at and write about on my blog next week…which would it be??? You know I love my blog readers…and I REALLY, super, duper love when others share our heart-beat for adoption. SOOOO…lemme know which of these you’d love the SKINNY on—and I’m all over it. You know I’ll take pictures. I might even video tape…or Flip-it. It’ll be the 2nd best thing from being there yourself;).

Except…if you were there—we could totally meet for coffee and you could buy some beads that our widows made and a really cool Wiphan t. Well, you can buy those online now at our Wiphan shop…and then you can drink your coffee when you read the skinny next week on your favorite pick. But still…it’s not coffee with ME! So…if you could go…which break-out would be a must go to???

Did I already say it’s not too late to register? Last minute road-trip people. Live on the edge. Get crazy. Come hang out with really cool people that have a heart for orphans, widows and adoption.

How can we be on a mission for the fatherless out of an overflow of our love for Jesus?

Your’e kiling me , I sooo want to go! My husband is going to be out of town and I keep thinking maybe I’ll throw the kids in the car and drop them off in Franklin with the in-laws! OK, maybe not, way too much going on around here. But I am jealous! I think I would want to attend the one of the ones dealing with transracial adoption. At the T4A conference in Franklin this Fall we didn’t think that we were even considering Africa- so we didn’t attend any of those!!
Be safe and enjoy it for us! (:

Shannon - February 25, 2010 - 1:16 am

So wish I could go and have coffee with you! I’m not sure how I would choose a breakout session though! IF I had to choose I would like more information on getting our church involved in adoption ministry. Have a great weekend!

Kim - February 25, 2010 - 8:57 am

Cannot wait to hear all that you learn!
Love & Blessings from Hong Kong,
Kim

Kim - February 25, 2010 - 10:41 am

Only 1? I can only pick 1? Wow…they all look so good. I would have to choose “Here’s the church…here’s the people…” Do you suppose any of this info will be available for download/purchase following the conference?

admin - February 25, 2010 - 10:56 am

I’m not sure if it will be available for purchase or download–but the basic conference book was available for download from the T4A conference. SOOOO many good ones to choose from!!! I *SO* want a conference to be held CLOSER to me next time! I’m going to attend what I can and I’ll post on the ones I can visit next week! Thanks for letting me know which you guys would love to hear about!!! You guys know I love sharing about anything orphan/adoption related!!!!

admin - February 25, 2010 - 10:57 am

Meant to add Kim…I’ll definitely ASK your question and let you know what I find out!

Renea - February 25, 2010 - 1:23 pm

WOW!!! I so wanted to go!!! I live way to far to be spontaneous though. So I’m thinking ANY of the sessions on getting an adoption ministry in your church, the fundraising ones for families, and the one at the bottom where MEN leading… oh what a glorious day when more men are bringing their wives to adoption rather than the reverse. Anxious to see what you get to do and all the pics!!! Can’t wait for you to share. Have a blessed time and drive carefully!

Natali - February 25, 2010 - 10:54 pm

Definitely the one about ethnic adoption preparing us for Heaven. Sounds like a great time!

Megan - February 27, 2010 - 2:27 am

Awwww…wish I could be there!!! But that would be a long flight and a lot of extra money that needs to be going towards our adoption right now. I really would love to have coffee with you too! =)
As far as which I’m interested in…
A Call to Holiness, Here is the Church and Here are the People: Where Does Adoptin Fit In?, Funding Your Adoption, Launching Adoptin Ministry in Your Church…can you do all of them??? =)

Collecting Coins, Yummy Recipe & One Year Bible Reading

COLLECTING COINS…

This week, Parker’s school Fellowship Christian, has been collecting coins to raise money for Wiphan Care Ministries! The kids have gotten REALLY excited about collecting coins this year—if they fill up their classroom jar they get an ICE CREAM PARTY (YUM!). They only have 8 kiddos in the preK classes where the other upper grades have 18.

Parker told me yesterday, “Mom, we only have 8 kids in our class, and the other classes have like 1800!!! But we can still do it!” Love his competitive spirit;).

He blew me away on Monday when he came home and got out his savings jar. I asked him if he wanted to give a percentage of it away, and he told me that he wanted to GIVE ALL OF IT. Naturally (my yuck nature), I said, “ARE YOU SURE?!” And my sweet son looked at me like that was a crazy question and said, “Yes! I want to give it all for the kids in Africa!”

O LORD, give us faith like a child! If we have faith the size of a mustard seed, we can move to a mountain and it will move. I believe you want to do GREAT things in Africa, at Wiphan, with the many adoptions in progress…help us Lord to have faith like our own children and to trust you with EVERYTHING!

YUMMY RECIPE

If you like reubens and quesillas…this recipe is for you! SO YUMMY! This is great for lunch and appetizers. It’s even good the next day heated up. I made these last Saturday so we wouldn’t have to cook on Sunday…

Stacked Tortillas Reuben
Copy of IMG_1518
Bake Time: 10 minutes Makes: 4 servings Prep Time: 15 minutes

1/2 medium sweet onion diced
2 Tbsp cooking oil
1 cup sauerdkraut
1 tsp. caraway seeds
4 10-inch tortillas
1/2 cup Thousand Island salad dressing
8 oz. thinly sliced corned beef
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In skillet, cook onion in 1 tbsn oil until tender. Add sauerkraut and 1/2 tsp caraway seed. Cook for 2-3 minutes.

2. Brush remaining oil over 2 of the tortillas. Place, oiled side down, on 2 large pizza pans or baking sheets. Spread salad dressing over tortillas. Top with corned beef, onion mixture, and cheese. Top with remaining tortillas. Brush with remaining oil; sprinkle with caraway seeds. Bake 10 mintues or until cheese is melted. Cut into wedges and serve.

***If you don’t have Thousand Island (which I forgot to buy at the store for this recipe) you can whip it up yourself with 1/2 cup mayo, 2 tablespoons ketchup, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, 2 teaspoons sugar, 2 teaspoons sweet relish, 1 teaspoon finely minced onion, 1/8 teaspoon salk and a dash of black pepper.*** Tuck that one away for an emergency;)

One Year Bible Reading: Leviticus 23:1-25:23…

Chapter 23 – Takes us through the calendar followed by the Israelites. It was tied with the rhythm of the seasons and the history of the nation.

Chapter 24 – In this chapter God gives Moses instructions concerning 3 holy things—1) the holy oil for the lampstand 2) the holy bread for the table and 3) the holy name of the Lord.

I love the foreshadowing of what is to come here…the frankincense beside the bread…our coming Savior the bread of life.

Chapter 25 – The focus of this chapter is the land of the Israelites. The Lord gave them instructions on when to use the land and when to rest. He was really helping them care for the land so it wouldn’t spoil. This is when my granola self comes out…the importance of us using what we have for the glory of God BUT also taking care of what He has given up already by recycling and thinking green:) I could so be Amish;).

Hope you all have a GREAT weekend!

XOXO!

Andrea

Oh our precious children! My oldest (14 yr) came up to me and handed me 100.00 and said it was for the Adoption fund. My reaction was the same as yours…”Are you sure?!” He was insistant and I was humbled. He had been collecting his birthday and Christmas money from family. Love these little world changers!

Oh to have their faith! My 8 year old is such a giver and is always reminding me that those little extra things I like to throw in the cart at Target are not needs but wants and the money would be better used to help others. I’m trying to keep up with the reading…not too far behind!
