Praying the scriptures over your children… (a must share pearl of godly wisdom)

One of my mommy mentors shared this pearl of godly wisdom with me—and it is a must share. I think there is such value in having mommy mentors—but it can also be hard to connect some times with one…much less several. SOOO…trust that I’ll be sharing any gems and pearls when they come my way. Today’s pearl—is just precious to my heart…and one thing that as a mommy of 4 I truly want to make time for…and truly can–as it’s simple but so impactful.

Praying Scriptures over my children…

One of my mommy mentors buys a 3×5 spiral ruled index cards–one for each of her children. Each week, she prays through scripture and chooses a verse to pray over each child. She simply writes each of her children’s names on the front of the spiral card. I wanted to put pictures on the front of mine because I’m such a visual person. I love praying each verse over each child—looking at their picture and even tracing my fingers over their sweet faces while I pray…

She encouraged me to choose a verse that needed to be prayed into that child’s life…RIGHT then. THEN…date it. Just to give you a few examples. Laney and Parker have had trouble these past few weeks living in harmony with one another. As I observe conflict, I realize that it is usually Laney’s lack of patience that causes the conflict to escalate. I want to pray patience, steadiness and encouragement into her and that it would be God giving her these—so this is one of the verses I am praying into Laney’s life this week….

For Isaac–I feel so far away from him. I can’t care for him—but I LONG to. YET…I know my Savior can. I am praying this into Isaac’s life this week…

And poor Frank. No one will throw that kid a bone this week. Parker and Laney have been getting frustrated with him–simply because he is a “BABY” and doing what babies do…trying their cereal WITH MILK when they get up for a sec to go to the restroom…playing with their toys but “not in the right way mommy!”…and this sweet ones just needs the grace and mercy of his siblings. Some times if you are afraid your mommy brain might forget why you wanted to pray that specific verse…you can jot down little notes at the bottom…

Finally for Parker, he is just having a season of…complaining. So, instead of being cross-eyed as a mommy about it—I’m turning to the Lord and praying laughter and joy on his lips…

You can keep these beside each child’s bedside—pray these verses over them when you put them down to bed. When you go sit for quiet time, collect them and use these as a guide to keep you focused and purposeful as you pray over your children. As prayers are answered, you can write notes on the back of the card and jot down examples of the Lord’s faithfulness. AND THEN…they are easy to file away. When they get older, you can give them their cards at the end of each year. At night, they will be by their bedside—in hopes that one day they, too, will pick them up and join you in praying these verses back into their hearts and lives.

As if this isn’t enough of a pearl—what will this do to our mommy hearts? One, it will take us to the Word—searching for scripture to pray over our children. And two, before you know it—you are memorizing scripture that is practical and useful RIGHT NOW in your family’s life.

Just a pearl…that I had to share.

HAVE A GREAT TUESDAY!

P.S. Only 9 more days until court:). Please pray we pass the first time! XOXO!

What an awesome idea! I had a friend do this for my husband and I. We were going through some tough times with our adoption. She had been praying scriptures over us and gave them to me on index cards just to let me know. She punched a whole in each corner and tied them together with ribbon. I keep them on my nightstand so that when I feel worried I can look at the scriptures and remember.

Shannon - May 4, 2010 - 10:50 am

oohhhh…I love this! Getting myself some spiral notecards today! Also, thought you might like to know that our pantry door is completely covered in chalkboard paint. Months ago I drew Africa on the board and hearts for places and people we’re praying for. Our sponsored children in Swaziland, Katie Davis in Uganda, Wiphan, Hannah’s Hope and now sweet Isaac is up there right next to Hannah’s Hope. Every time we get into the pantry (which is often:)) there’s a little blue heart there reminding us to send up some prayers for your baby Isaac. Praying him home SOON! Shannon

First things first for me in the morning. Grab my hot cocoa (not a coffee drinker) and head to my laptop before the kids get up. Sad face when your blog hasn’t been updated (keep checking back) and then happy face when there is new info to learn!!! Brilliant idea ~ I am so doing this (one for me/hubby too) ~ and my kids are old enough to read their book left behind on their nightstand. Happy Day to You!

Kim - May 4, 2010 - 11:20 am

Okay … this is like an early Mothers Day gift for me. I am heading out first thing in the a.m. to buy my notebooks (one for my hubby too). I just LOVE it!
Thank you for all the ways you continue to bless my days!
Praying for that court date!
Love & Blessings from Hong Kong,
Kim

Great advice! I am in the middle of several books that discuss this idea. Recently the importance of praying for my family has been on my heart a lot. Thanks for sharing.

Leigh - May 4, 2010 - 11:34 am

I love praying scripture for my babies already (even without their sweet faces) but I LOVE the idea of having a book to remember what you prayed for each child at specific times! Thanks for sharing!

Chrystal - May 4, 2010 - 11:55 am

I LOVE this idea!!!! I will be doing this for all 5 of my girls, love-love-love it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Angela - May 4, 2010 - 2:12 pm

Precious ! Isaac’s Psalm 91 is so true for he is being protected and will be with you all soon ! Did you see my idea of the Prayers Angels for your Isaac?

Rory - May 4, 2010 - 7:18 pm

Love this idea! Funny God’s timing. A couple of weeks ago I really felt prodded to get some spiraled index cards. I knew I needed to get some Scriptures written down on them again. Then I pulled up your post today and Voila! Now I know exactly what God wants me to do with them…(side note: One of the words He gave me for 2010 was that it was going to be a “passage” year…a year of going through to the other side, and a year of Scripture passages to do it.) This just all fits together and I’m very excited to write in mine tonight! Thank you!!–Rory

Brianne - May 4, 2010 - 8:01 pm

LOVE IT! I can’t wait to get to the store tomorrow and get started on them!! Such a wonderful way to pray for our children and what a story it will tell in time!! My husband also started a journal for each of our kids when they were born and write in it every so often and he hopes to give it to them when they move out and I write and seal a letter to each of our kids on their birthday and have them tucked away in their keepsake buckets to open one day. I hope they will treasure these little things!!

Jenny - May 4, 2010 - 8:20 pm

Oh WOW…. this is GOOD stuff! I LOVE it! I love that you use pics on the front. I am definitely going to be investing in some of these booklets. Thank you for sharing! I’m always encouraged when I come to your blog:)

Shelley - May 5, 2010 - 5:52 pm

I love this idea. I got mine yesterday and started last night. I thought I would also do one for my husband and I. We both picked two verses for the month and wrote them down. It was neat to see what we both picked for us to pray about for our marriage.

Psalm 96:1

“Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth.”

My heart sings today an old worship song from my first years of walking with Christ…

Sing unto the Lord a new song.
Sing unto the Lord all the earth.
Sing unto the Lord a new song.
Sing unto the Lord…all the earth.

Our God is great! Hey!
And greatly to be praised. Hey!
Our God is great!
And greatly to be praised!

Sing unto the LORD, a new song!
Sing unto the LORD all the earth!
Sing unto the LORD, a new song!
Sing unto the Lord all the earth!

Remember His faithfulness today in Your life…praise Him…and sing unto Him a new song!

Thankful for the Body of Christ!

So many blessings to share today! And I just have to share…I want Isaac to one day see God’s fingerprints ALL over this entire journey! YOU ARE LOVED ISAAC!

On Friday, we posted a cupcake fundraiser to help fund our Ethiopia trip. I contemplating selling t-shirts and emailed a few places…told them I needed to raise just $1000 to go toward our trip. One place told me that was a lofty goal. WELLLL…we serve an AMAZING God! We decided to skip the t-shirts and just go straight to God’s people…and guess what?! $1500 came our way in just 48 hours!!! SERIOUSLY?! I’m SOOO serious! Glory be to God!

Check out our cupcake designs here…each contributor designed a cupcake with their donation to help bring our CUPCAKE HOME! We couldn’t be more blown away…more thankful…or more excited to have those who have journeyed alongside us also support us in the end…GOING TO GET HIM! AHHHHH…it’s THE GOSPEL!

Adoption on Earth sooooo mirrors our adoption in Christ. HOW COOL IS IT for us, as believers, to help fund the actual GOING TO BRING SOMEONE HOME!!! To think—for years…I never knew there were THOUSANDS of believers out there following the Lord in adopting His little ones who need families…MY how I’ve been missing the opportunity to help support them!!! This whole cupcake thing…was for MY HEART…FOR HIS GLORY! Richard and I have made the commitment to help fund adoptions…making orphans SONS AND DAUGHTERS…until the DAY WE GO HOME TO BE WITH OUR SAVIOR! Stay tuned…because I have some ideas that the Lord has planted on my heart that I’ll be sharing after we bring home our love! I’m SO NOT DONE here people! How contagious it is to be in the midst of the Lord’s work! AND I’M ADDICTED!

One thing that has BLOWN ME AWAY…is how the body of Christ serves one another. Can you believe that there were 26 families that participated in my cupcake fundraiser in 48 hours? Can you believe that I have only met 10 of them?! YES…that’s 16 families supporting ours that are BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST who supported us…MOST raising money to adopt THEMSELVES! WOW! I am blown, blown, blown away by that!!!

Something else that blows me away…is how others not only support BUT LOVE ON one another in this journey. Now…it’s one thing for me to send my bestfriend a baby gift. BUT…on Friday I opened my mailbox to find THREE gifts from some of YOU. SERIOUSLY?! I had to sit down while I opened these because I was so humbled, so thankful, so amazed at how the body of Christ serves and loves one another through adoption. Each gift has a story…

First, I opened up a gift from Jenny Calfee. Jenny’s family is also adopting from Ethiopia…they have 3 children already—2 biological and 1 STUD from Guatamala! They are a precious family who we have bonded with…many late nights Jenny and I can be found text messaging one another through TEARS on Facebook. Jenny has been such an encouragement on our journey. Oh Jenny, I hope I can be the same to you on yours! She sent me this beautiful pendant with “enat” on it which means “mother” in amharic…And on the back…ISAAC!The crazy thing about this gift–is the night BEFORE I got this I had a DREAM that I was holding Isaac and he kept saying “Enat! Enat! Enat!”
Imagine my smile when I opened up THIS at the mailbox…talk about both Jenny and God loving on me! She got this precious pendant off etsy.com at dosbesitos.etsy.com. Visit the Calfee family’s blog to follow their sweet journey to their FOURTH child! SO thankful for this precious family!

SECOND…I got a gift from ANOTHER adoption mommy friend—the Strobel family! Loooove me some Melanie Strobel. Melanie and I have had many a long phone conversation…and we have laughed together–cried together…she and I have truly connected and I’m so thankful to be on this journey with their family. Honestly, this momma’s heart makes me…(ahhh…happy sigh!). She has a heart for orphans like you wouldn’t believe. I opened up a precious package from her and found this…It is PERFECT! The colors of Isaac’s nursery! I could hang this with nails matching up with the holes, but I think I’m going to find some fun ribbon to hang it from instead. It would fit one of my 8×8 prints beautifully—and I think it’s just going to wait on one of our first family portraits! (I’ve been getting some sneak peak pictures from families in Ethiopia getting their little ones…so I might have to put one of those up just for me to stare at for a bit;) AND how cute is the magnet that holds the picture on…SWEET CARAMEL BROWN BABY FEET! OK…Melanie couldn’t have planned this one–only the Lord. After I took this picture this morning and was swooning over the magnet feet I checked my email to see someone wrote on my Facebook wall…from the Peltz family who is at Hannah’s Hope in Ethiopia RIGHT NOW getting their son! And what did she have to say? “You’re little man is SO cute! AND I really think he looks so strong! Tiny feet…but really cute feet! Maybe I will take a picture of those toes for you!” Seriously…now if that didn’t make me smile! I love how the Lord always connects dots for us—Michelle nor Melanie could have planned that one…the Lord just wanted to remind me, “I AM IN THIS ANDREA! TRUST ME!”

OK…I know you all are going to want to know where she got this! Not sure if you can buy direct but here is the website on the card: www.carolroedastudio.com. SOOOO PRECIOUS! Thank you Melanie for thinking of me and taking time out of your busy schedule (they have THREE little ones TOO…and are also going for #4!) to love on me! YOU ARE A BLESSING IN MY LIFE!

And finally, a gift from the Pighinni family. Jenn is a former client of mine. SOOOOO precious to have one of my photography clients who will now be without a photographer as I quit to be 100% mommy to my babies SUPPORT my decision and even shower down love on us! Your family is just precious to me Jenn! I love your little G…and it was a JOY to capture her first year of life for you. Jenn surprised us with this beautiful print (I blurred out his Ethiopia name which will be his middle name as our agency doesn’t allow us to share his given name until we bring him home)…Now…to go for a white matte or soft baby blue matte with a dark brown frame…that is the question:). You can find a sweet print like this also at Etsy at Wall Candy. Can’t wait to put this on the nursery wall as well. HOW this Isaac has been prayed for!!!

My…how His blessings flow down and the love we feel through the body of Christ! Thank you sweet friends for supporting our trip to Ethiopia…and these precious gifts! I love you all to pieces and pieces and more pieces!!!

How can the Lord use me to love on someone else today?

Show me Lord families that you desire to feel your showers of blessing on. Let us serve one another! Thank you friends for modeling for me what it means to love and serve one another today. XOXO!

Wow! That is so sweet! God really knows our heart. He knows just what we need & it’s amazing He allowed you to see the connected dots! We serve an amazing God!

Kim - May 4, 2010 - 8:37 am

Oh Andrea…I love reading your heart. I tell everyone in fundraising that every step of it has great purpose…not just to get our little ones. Love you sista!

It is well…with my soul!

This morning in worship–the final song was “It is well with my Soul.” Glory be to God! This song—melts me. ABSOLUTE…MELT. I forget the world–those around me…and anything that may be burdening my heart. This hymn reminds me—that NO MATTER WHAT…His ways are higher than mine—and as I seek His face and surrender to HIS WILL—HE WILL BE GLORIFIED.

I can’t help but be wowed when I sing the words to remember the author of this hymn…a story if you have never heard–it is one that you must know. I have the books Then Sings My Soul by Robert J. Morgan. These books are fantastic as they are the hymns of olde–but by each hymn is there story…the background on each writer. “And they overcame him [the evil one] by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.” (Revelation 12:11). WOW. The power of testimony. Want a hymn to have deeper meaning…know the testimony of the believer who wrote it. I can’t recommend Morgan’s books enough…and the writer of “It is Well”…Horatio G. Spafford has a story that must be told…

Wow. As I sang this morning and thought of Spafford’s life—and how he wrote and STILL SANG THIS SONG…tears came into my eyes. Seriously…IS IT WELL WITH MY SOUL?

No matter what…will I follow Him?

If Isaac comes home and it is harder than I ever thought…is it well?

If he never walks…is it well? (He will! Believing he is going to be a HEALTHY boy…but what IF…is it well?)

If we don’t pass court on the 13th…is it well?

If I lose all…like Spafford…is it well?

O, LORD haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll; The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend, “even so” it is well with my soul.

This is not about my story—it is about HIS story. Without His power, I would still be a lost, lonely, sad soul—searching for meaning, wondering why I am here, and feeling alone. He grabbed me when I turned 18–and said, “Follow Me.” I am reminded today—that this life is not my own, that it’s about HIS STORY and that no matter what happens…it is well because He is all that matters.

It’s not about me…it’s not about you…it’s about Him. I am blown away today by His love–and that He brings along others with us to do life with us…to hold one another’s hands and say, “No matter what—let’s stick together running to the cross…let’s not look to the left or right—but run to Him and trust Him no matter what! Let’s raise our hands to the King saying, “Glory be to God!” and trust Him with all that is to come!”

Let us join Spafford in saying “It is well; the will of God be done.”

P.S. I checked my mailbox yesterday to find not one, not two…but THREE precious gifts from 3 precious mommies who are believers and are running this race with me. Melanie, Jenny and Jenn…thank you for showering God’s love on me this weekend. I can’t wait to share these sweet gifts with everyone tomorrow. How thankful I am for all of your prayers…it would be an HONOR to pray for you and your families—so please send me your prayer requests so I can also pray for your family. It would be a privilege to pray as we walk this road toward our Savior’s will together. Love you all.

P.S. 11 more days until our court date (May 13th in the watches of the morning…) praying for the Lord’s will to be done.

I am struggling with this idea Andrea…asking and praying EACH.AND.EVERY.DAY for contentment where we are. What a beautiful post of encouragement to read. THANK YOU ๐Ÿ™‚

Jenn

Kristin - May 3, 2010 - 12:13 am

Such a true to life post. I agree with Jenn, it is a daily struggle. It’s so true that it is HIS story, you hit that right on!

Jenny - May 3, 2010 - 8:32 am

This convicts me every.single.time I hear his story. Do I trust that God is enough, even when the storm rages, even when things are going well? Thanks for this amazing reminder that my soul should find rest in HIM alone! Much Love….

Thankful and AMAZED!

In just 24 hours God has blown our socks off…and 1/2 of our travel expenses have been raised to bring our cupcake home! *IF* we are able to use our Delta SkyMiles (praying that works with the dates we will be required to fly)…then the SkyMiles would cover the OTHER half of our expenses! As I did the math, I smiled realizing how much the Lord had provided to have our adoption 100% paid for—and when I looked at our travel…Richard and I saw where we could be creative…sell things here and there…but no matter which way we looked at it—we remained at least $1,000 short on our travel. I thought if we could raise around $1,000 then we’d be set…and in 24 hours we have $1,165! I prayed that the Lord would provide just what we need—and I have such a peace that we have what we need. Of course we’ll need our SkyMiles to work out–but I am praying and believing they will!

I will be uploading the rest of the cupcakes you all sent my way (if you donated toward our trip but didn’t make a cupcake…no worries—Laney will make one for you!). I can’t wait to show Isaac all the cupcakes one day of all the people who came together to help us bring him home! What amazes me most—are the people who gave to us that are adopting or who I have never met or people who aren’t adopting…but “get it”. I am so thankful. Thank you for becoming a precious part of our journey…and I can’t wait to get home…get settled and pay it forward. One things certain—my heart NEEDED to feel and understand need…and to feel what it is like to have the body of Christ support you. WOW! I told Richard that every year until we are taken to glory, I want to support an adopting family! What a JOY and PRIVILEGE to be a part of a child coming HOME FOREVER!

I have a sweet family with our agency who is raising 100% of their adoption fees…and in a few weeks she is going to guest post on being a fundraisting family in adoption. Not all of us may be called to open our homes—but I truly believe that we are all called to serve the orphan…and be a part of them being placed in families. Psalm 68:6 says “God places the lonely in families.” What an opportunity to be a part of what God is doing!!!

Thank you sweet friends for loving me…loving my family…and especially for loving Isaac.

Come back tomorrow afternoon—and check out all the cupcakes under my adoption link! How thankful I am for each of these families who sacrificed to help us bring home our son. Love you all.
