See where God is working…AND JOIN HIM THERE! (…how He loves the orphan and widow…here HE is ALWAYS working!)

Oh me oh my–how the Lord DOES work wonders…STILL TODAY. Wanna join Him? Wanna be used RIGHT now to make a HUGE difference?

There is no way I can put into words how God has orchestrated these events leading to this post–but just know the Lord is working…in Korah. We have a beautiful 16 year old sponsored child…our “5th child”…who will leave in just a couple of weeks for school. He is being pulled OUT of the Addis trash dump in Ethiopia where the beautiful people of Korah live. Yes, you read that right. A trash dump. It is known as a lepar colony–and as these lepars had children–a community grew…and it is Korah. To make a beautiful and long story short that you can read more and stay up to date more on here at Project 61’s blog, they had a dream to get 75 kids sponsored…MAYBE 100–out of the dump–and into school. WELL…GOD had BIGGER plans! More than 230 kids are sponsored and will leave in a couple of weeks for school outside of the city!!! PRAISE GOD!

They will leave the ashes and dirt…

And they will get to go to school for the first time…Many of them teenages…many of them orphans. AND most thinking they have been forgotten. BUT–our GOD IS NOT A GOD WHO FORGETS! No sir!!! His HEART BEATS for these people…for the orphan, the widow, the lepar, the poor. THIS IS WHERE HE IS WORKING MY FRIENDS!!! Do you want to join HIM?!

Now…these 230+ kids leave in a couple of weeks for school–and a sweet mommy friend of mine, Sarah Titus, emailed me to tell me the city the children will be at boarding school in is a malaria zone. NOW…what a privilege to take them out of the dump. What a privilege to sponsor them. (they are officially all sponsored!) BUT…to take them out and risk getting malaria…which you all know how I feel about malaria. SO, I asked Sarah to email Sumer…(pictured below)and just ask how many nets they need. Because I BELIEVE God wants to provide for every last one!!! Because they will be sleeping in bunks which ONE net will hang and cover 2 beds–Sumer requeted 120 nets. Now…my role–to get them there. This is where it turns into a GOD STORY…

I just happen to have an Ethiopian friend. SO…I email my friend to ask about nets there. We have a supplier in Zimbabwe that we were getting quotes from for our nets for Wiphan. BUT of course buying them locally would save on shipping. I guessed we would need to raise $1,500 or so for 120 nets. I thought we would run a fun little fundraiser on my blog and it’d take a few weeks to raise the money and then we’d slowly send nets over or have them shipped and JUST MAYBE the kids would AT LEAST have nets for half of the school year. GOD HAD A BETTER PLAN…

I emailed my friend who misunderstood me and instead of quoting me a price for 120 nets…HE BOUGHT THEM…and DELIVERED THEM. SO…the kids now have the nets…in 24 hours this happened…and they were just under $5 each. SO…while my plan would get them there in a few months–THEY ALREADY HAVE THEM! Now…to pay my friend back…I realized I just happen to have a friend picking up her baby in Ethiopia to spot me! Melanie Strobel–thank you for allowing God to use you in this amazing way…and for overseaing this project! Seriously–doesn’t God BLOW you away?! So…we have until Friday to raise the money to cover the cost! Because…my friend is cool like that;).

You think God made my friend misinterpret the email? ABSOLUTELY! You think God put my other friend in Ethiopia this week to spot me? ABSOLUTELY! You think God loves those 230+ orphans and wants them out of the dump, safe in school and protected from malaria? ABSOLUTELY! You think God just MIGHT want to give us the honor, the privilege, the opportunity to JOIN HIM in what He has ALREADY done and is doing?! ABSOLUTELY!

Here is the deal. ONE net is $5. $5 will save TWO CHILDREN from getting malaria. Malaria mosquitos ONLY bite at night. These nets are high quality and have the treatment that will kill the insects and if everyone in an area uses them the malaria mosquito population decreases by 90%. The treated nets are effective for 4 years—and this is how long MOST of these older kids will be in boarding school! SO…your giving $5 will save 2 children for this year…and 2 more children that sleep in that same bunk for the next THREE years.

How beautiful these children are! And how much HE does love them!

On a crazier note–Sarah emailed me and told me that she has been raising money that would cover the nets cost. BUT–she has a bigger vision for the TEENAGE GIRLS of Korah and we want to use that money toward clothe feminine pads to keep the girls in school. Can you believe that the areas and schools where the girls have these the drop out rate drops from 40% to 8%. Ok…that post and fundraiser is TO COME. BUT thankfully–we have a stash started! I told Sarah I believe that God wants to use MANY OF YOU to help save the children from malaria. Many of YOU have children whom you have adopted–whose birth families were effected by malaria–and this epedemic is something near and dear to YOUR heart. Many of you maybe can’t sponsor a child or go do what Sumer is doing…but you CAN give $5. And GOD CAN USE THAT IN A VERY BIG WAY TO SAVE A CHILD’S LIFE!

If you would like to buy 1, 2 or 3…or even 10 nets…you can donate here:

For $5 save 2 lives…just AMAZING!

ANY extra money over the amount we need will be put toward our NEXT fundraiser for the clothe pads for the girls leaving Korah in a couple of weeks for school.

These are the faces that keep me up at night…
Because I CAN do something.

Because it IS OUR responsibility.

Because saying NO to just ONE drive thru THIS week will not only save ONE life—BUT TWO.

Will you join us?

Will you join where God is already working?

Will you make a difference in this BIG way…for just $5?

If you missed this video last night I posted it about Korah…it is a must see…

The Village of Korah from ReFocus Media on Vimeo.

I think I might officially be on a mission…
We all need one. And boy is life so much more exciting when you join one–or when you find your own.

Thank you for considering helping the children of Korah in this way!!!

P.S. Thank you Kelly of Ordinary Hero and Melanie Strobel for the amazing pictures!!!

Partners in this beautiful life… Loving serving with you my sister!
Keep up the prayers. I saw the looks on the p61 team today when the nets were delivered and Sammy Liben can hardly contain his joy! SO many children with an opportunity ahead. Worshipped with my sponsored child and loved every moment of my Korah experience. Peace!

Andrea Young - August 22, 2010 - 3:52 pm

Erica Kennett - August 22, 2010 - 4:24 pm

I’ve been reading your blog for a few months now, but have never commented… I guess I’m a blog stalker… πŸ™‚ You inspire me!! We are on the waiting list for a baby girl from Ethiopia. God has given us a heart for Africa. We donated and I linked to this post to my facebook account, so hopefully more of my friends will give too! Thanks for giving us chances to help!

Elle J - August 22, 2010 - 4:28 pm

YES ~ I’m donating money for nets and beyond. Well done, again, in following God’s Will and not stopping your connections to pull people together to help.

Betsy Emerson - August 22, 2010 - 4:57 pm

We’re IN! We have a teenage son at Korah ( God keeps giving me more boys, every time we sign up to sponsor someone- love it! ) – can’t wait to meet him! I still have two trips to make so keep me informed on what you are thinking next…..

Sara - August 22, 2010 - 5:22 pm

Andrea – this is so amazing and wonderful! By the way, are you aware that after a person makes a donation, they are redirected to a site: babyofmyheart/thankyou? I am thinking there is a typo somewhere, because I don’t think you meant for people to be sent there…

Jody - August 22, 2010 - 5:52 pm

THANK YOU for heading this up!!!!!! these kids are in my thoughts ALL. DAY. LONG. oh my heart is HAPPY!

Jill Dupras - August 22, 2010 - 6:31 pm

Since I first heard about Korah, my heart has been breaking. Thank you for providing this opportunity to give. I have been so encouraged by your journey to Isaac. We are currently waiting for a referral for two children and I feel like part of my heart is in Ethiopia.

Lara - August 22, 2010 - 6:32 pm

Just bought 2! I can’t wait to see what God does here!

Wanna help?

I have a really, amazing, inexpensive…super cool thing that YOU could do…to help an orphan in a really BIG, life-changing, life perserving way. Working on last minute details…but we need YOUR help–and it’ll cost less than a trip through the drive thru. Oh yeah–and every orphan that needs one…really should have it by the end of this month.

SO…PRETTY PLEASE WITH ICE CREAM AND SPRINKLES ON TOP come back Sunday night–and see how you can be used by sending just $5 to make a REALLY big difference. If God keeps working at the rate He is working–the details should all be together by then;).

Rebecca Harley - August 22, 2010 - 9:04 am

excited to help!!

My miracle baby…

So–we are home. And happy to be home! The appointment to the urologist was NOT fun–and I’ll spare the details other than I have never heard my sweet baby cry like that–and as I leaned over the table with my cheek to his, I couldn’t tell the difference between his tears and mine. Another adoption friend of mine encouraged me today (thank you Tiffani!) by telling me that it was through all of their hard stuff that she felt she and her boys TRULY bonded–and the more things we go through like this…I COMPLETELY AGREE.

AND THEN…the doctor looked at us and said his kidneys are PERFECT.

The doctor at Scottish Rite a few weeks ago said he saw reflux as we did the cath, xray, then also–but today–NOTHING. I hummed this song all the way home…

And today–we got a break. Ahh–the Lord’s grace!!! We also had an ultrasound to see if there was in scar tissue. NONE. Everything looks great. We were able to see his belly is retaining air (Karen Halbert…you called it!) and whatever he is eating his body is not processing it smoothly (could be lactose intolerant…so we may be switching some things up)…but I’m praising the Lord that our problems seem to just be–well, “normal” baby problems!!! Now we have a double ear infection to get rid of–and antiobiotics aren’t working…but we have a doc visit on Tuesday…might visit the chiro just to see what he thinks while we are at it…and we might have to go the tubes right. BUT these problems are SO SMALL…and we are thankful!!! Now we can focus on getting rid of that and our workouts!!! Praise be and glory be to God!

Another praise–Frank has turned a corner…and it’s rather consistent! He is LOVING his baby brother and so secure in his place in our family. SO THANKFUL. It took 6-7 good weeks to get there…but there is a new joy in his heart!

I will say–right now…today…we are very tired. I told a friend who asked how I was doing the other day, “Things are GREAT…as long as I am okay with not taking a shower, eating or going to the bathroom—everything is under control and things are running beautifully. NOW…if I want to do one of the above 3 things–I have to brace myself.” We are choosing to laugh A LOT. I am finding new ways to fix my unshowered hair…I laugh every time I put all 4 kids 5 and under in the Target cart…and I smile the entire way through Publix as Isaac and Frank do this head bang thing as they turn the cart’s car’s wheels. I don’t talk on the phone to friends–at all. (I can email them after everyone is in bed and if they love me…they understand.) I don’t watch tv–at all. (I have plenty of reality entertainment here–and at times it is very dramatic and others it is total TLC). My blog is my outlet. (I love my readers…but I’d write if I had 0.) AND THERE IS JOY IN MY HEART. (and that is good enough for me!)

I feel like I am learning daily what it means to follow Christ–and goodness, I sure am messing up a lot—BUT there is so much peace and joy in the craziness of following Him. Just last night, Richard was in Houston so I was in charge of feeding and bathing all 4 of my babies by myself and after the night before staying up ALL night–I was just at my wit’s end. I was doing so great and keeping from coming unraveled—and then I got desperate. You know when you start talking to God OUTLOUD, “Please God. I really need help right now. Can you Holy Spirit come down and help me?” Wouldn’t you have been impressed if you could have seen me then?! BUT…I’m so thankful that I can’t do it–and I have to rely on His strength…and that EACH day is a NEW day. (And I’m also thankful that my husband came home from Houston at 11am today and took the rest of the day OFF work to be with us!)

As my crew is off at dinner with daddy and I sit here listening to my sleeping baby breathe…I am reminded of His goodness even when we aren’t so good. I really wish I could be more like Him. I find myself in these tired days being more on edge and even snappy–and that is just not me. It may not always even “come out” but I feel it in my heart–and I need more of Him right now than ever. One of my high school friends (Pandi) reminded me a few weeks ago in an email to pray over protection of my time with the Lord more than ever right now. That is something I really need and want to do–and I need to make this a priority over everything. When Rich is out of town–it is absolutely crazy from sun up to sundown…and actually even crazy in between. One thing that has really helped me this week was having a song in my heart and singing hymns to my little ones…or at least humming them. I’ve been listening to this (Disc 2 is my favorite) and I want to encourage you as my friend encouraged me–to pray for protection over your time with Him and to “refind” it if it’s been lost for a bit. Find accountability…and even a women’s Bible study (wish many of you lived near ME and you could come join mine! Love my ladies!!!)

This post I think is all over the place–so I’ll stop now as I’m calling it a night at 6:30pm beside my little man who has had quite the day! I am again, more in love with him than I was this morning–and I’m so thankful for God’s continued mercies in his life and ours. My how the Lord loves His children!!! Thank you for loving him, loving us and praying for us. May you each have a wonderful, safe and blessed weekend!!!

Thank you, Lord, for answering prayers. As I am hours behind you, I sat this morning and prayed for the miracle of His touch on Isaac and chills are all over me now as I read the answer to prayer. Loving God deeper and deeper each time I read your posts of encouragement and wisdom and sharing of His hand in your life. LOVE IT! Sweet night to the Young Family.

Meredith - August 20, 2010 - 7:13 pm

Praise the Lord! I am so happy for another miracle for sweet Isaac. I pray that the Young family will sleep peacefully tonight and if you don’t that God will continue to give you the strength you need.

Leigh - August 20, 2010 - 7:16 pm

PRAISE THE LORD for his little kidneys being clear! Praying that you see more and more miracles as time goes on! I love being able to read your story and try to prepare myself for when my two are home…I mean prepare as well as you can, meaning not at all but you know God is good and we will make it by His grace πŸ™‚

Elizabeth Olson - August 20, 2010 - 7:30 pm

Our God is an awesome God and you are an AMAZING Momma!!!! Miracle baby indeed! Thank you for the daily inspiration and for keeping it real, even down to the shower details πŸ™‚ Praying for you all, and for ITY’s ears to heal!

Sara - August 20, 2010 - 8:03 pm

What you said about praying protection over our time with God really spoke to me. I can’t tell you how many times this week (and in the past 2 months) that quiet voice has pointed me to the Bible…and I have failed to open it. My church’s ladies’ Bible study starts in 2 weeks and I am really looking forward to the accountability again. BTW, I am so glad your little one is doing so well!

Lara - August 20, 2010 - 8:09 pm

I’m so glad to hear Isaac is healthy! When I read posts like this, it makes me okay with the long wait ahead for us. We’ve been told the Ethiopia timeline will be at least 6 months longer than it previously has been with AGCI. I have total peace about this. It gives us time to prepare our hearts and our kids for baby. I know it’s going to take a lot of energy and faith to get through the stage you’re in! Sending prayers your way~

Staci - August 20, 2010 - 8:58 pm

Checked your blog hoping for an update – Praising God with you for your miracle today! So happy to hear ITY’s kidneys are PERFECT! What a relief for all of you… Looking forward to healing of his ears, too. Will continue to pray for your rest – “the sleep of a laborer is sweet” (Ecc. 5:12) and indeed you are constantly laboring out of love for your littlest guy! Hope you find moments of rest and peace in the midst of the busyness this weekend…

Kim - August 20, 2010 - 9:04 pm

Great news from the doctors visit!
And if you wanna talk about Lactose Intolerance in babies … just shoot me an email! I am a resident expert!
Thank you too for your transparency. I remember when Tyler was traveling and the complete joy I had with the twins home. Yet having to balance three older kids and four days a week of therapy for Sam on top of major sleep deprivation.
This too shall pass and your sweet friend’s advice was spot on … guard your time with HIM!
That will be my prayer for you dear friend!
Love & Blessings,
Kim

natali - August 20, 2010 - 9:08 pm

Heidi - August 20, 2010 - 9:10 pm

Praise Jesus! I’m so happy for you ..your little man is a miracle for sure! Hang in there we are just in a season of life that your right we need Jesus more than ever to get into his word like crazy. Thanks for the reminder as I get distracted easily and need to pray for protection! Your a great mom I’m sure and you are doing the best you can.. hang in there

Heather - August 20, 2010 - 9:32 pm

btw, ear infections can be caused by a milk allergy. that’s what the chiro told me. so, if he’s lactose intolerant, he may really just be allergic altogether. my boy’s ear infections were really from teething (mom’s instinct).
ptl his kidney’s are perfect!

Dawn - August 20, 2010 - 10:16 pm

PRAISE GOD for the great health reports!!!! I remember when Sarah had to be in the hospital for a week…there was definitely bonding going on….not fun, but she at that point knew I was her mommy.

So glad Frank is doing better with brother….sometimes that is a really hard transition too.

Praying for est & peace for you household.

abby - August 20, 2010 - 10:22 pm

I have really loved reading about this journey. It has touched my heart in so many ways. I am praying for your family and for strength for you. So happy and thankful that Issac had such wonderful news from the dr. Please email me if you ever have any questions about low tone and therapy. We have done OT, PT and speech for this with my son. We have been discharged from therapy and are back in now. Be happy to support you in that way however I can.

Alison - August 20, 2010 - 11:43 pm

Yay!!!! So glad that sweet Isaac did so well today…and that everything is just “normal” baby problems! Praise God!!

missy - August 21, 2010 - 2:19 am

praising god for your miracle baby! ity seems to be covered in them!

i must comment on these two quotes
“I am finding new ways to fix my unshowered hair”
and
“You know when you start talking to God OUTLOUD, β€œPlease God. I really need help right now. Can you Holy Spirit come down and help me?” Wouldn’t you have been impressed if you could have seen me then?!”…there is nothing more beautiful than a person aware of their desperate need for christ. so, unshowered though you may be, your joy, the pouring out of your love, and your desperateness for god are beautiful to me!
and the dimples aren’t too shabby either. πŸ™‚

Amy @ Filled With Praise - August 21, 2010 - 7:39 am

So happy about the the results. Such a blessing!!
Love,
Amy

Jenn Bachman - August 21, 2010 - 8:23 am

Praise God!!! We went through that same test with our daughter. I also had never heard her cry like that before. It is heartbreaking. The only thing was I was on the outside of the door becasue they only let my husband go in with her. Praise God for miracles becasue her kidneys were fine too. I am so glad to hear that Issac’s tests came back perfect. We will continue to pray for his ears. I just want you to know how much I love and appreciate your blog. We are waiting for our refferal from Ethiopia for our precious little one and blog is always an encouragement to me.

Christy - August 21, 2010 - 10:55 am

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Praise the Lord!

april - August 21, 2010 - 11:11 am

Praise God his kidneys are great! So thankful! p.s. you mentioned about not getting showers in or hair done and I wanted to tell you about the commercials i just saw from tresame (spelling?) shampoo who just came out with a line products for days when you cant or dont want to wash your hair, its like dry shampoo spray or foam and it gives you hair sleek shine like its clean and volume!

Debb - August 21, 2010 - 7:20 pm

Praise the Lord! SUCH GREAT NEWS about Isaac’s kidneys being clear! I so appreciate your honesty on this blog. I understand how you can be so tired, and like it that you don’t try to be”perfect” and act like all is smooth sailing, always. I am going to be a first time mama of one, or maybe two children, as we are adopting from Ethiopia. I cherish your story. And your honesty. You and your family are beautiful! :o)
Blessings ~

hallelujah! what an amazing God we serve!

And the T-SHIRT give away for the Dockery family T IS…drum roll please…

SO with the older 2 off at school and ITY crashed after a night awake–Frankie-baby and I decided it was TIME to draw to see which of my commenters from THIS post wins a free t-shirt! SO we got ready—I wrote out ALL the commenter names…PLUS we added Frank to make it an even number just for the heck of it…Frank put all the names in a hat…I TOLD him to SHAKE IT UP…but my English doesn’t always translate so well to Frankie-baby…“No Frank! Shake! Shake!” Amazingly NONE of the names fell out and he got the shaking down pat!NEXT…I told him to hand me a piece of paper…He handed me ONE…then TWO…and then TEN!He was having SO much fun…and who can stop Frankie-baby from having fun?!

NEXT…he decided the other 10 needed to be thrown away…No offense to the other 10 names…I think he just really wanted the hat to be EMPTY so he could do THIS…Because Frank really doesn’t talk…he surely doesn’t READ…so I promise it was just CHANCE that one of the names he drew was HIS…SO…I guess there are not 1, not 2…BUT 10 winners according to FRANK!

My bestfriend Kelly has been selling the things our kiddos have outgrown on ebay for me b/c she is cool like that…so my xtra cash stash and then some is going to bless the Dockery adoption and TEN of you will new t-shirts! They have already been paid for–so all you have to do if you are a winner is email Abby (I’m sending all the winners an email with her email address)–give her your size AND address and it’ll be on it’s way. Abby already had the list of winners so she’s waiting to hear from…

1. Frank! (since it won’t fit him…he is donating his win to his momma…she’d like a small Abby!)
2. Julie @ Flitterbugs3. Andrea – ourbiggadoption.blogspot.com

Frank is too funny. My 1yr old also loves sweets (all day I hear, “need a treat, need a treat”, “candy mommy, need candy”). He also sneaks into the garage and tries to drink out of the empty soda cans. Good to know we’re not alone…

Meggan McFaden - August 20, 2010 - 2:11 pm

I love following your blog. Would you please let me know the name of the songs you use on your blog. Thanks Meggan @ Texas

Meredith - August 20, 2010 - 3:38 pm

Yay! Thanks for picking my name, Frank! My husband and I love these shirts! I am going to order one for him, too.

school days, doctor days, crazy Frank & photography 101

ITY decided at 2:30am he didn’t want to sleep anymore last night…SO–after 2 hours trying to convince him it was a good idea…at 4:30 I gave up:). Now…if you had emailed me and I returned your email at 4:30am…now you know why;). We were on about day 10 of antiobiotics for a really bad double ear infection…one we’ve been trying to kick for awhile now. He had it in just one ear when we went in on July 5th–and at every 2 week check up there is something else…only it seems to get worse. I hoped the ears weren’t what was keeping us up…and he was happy after he dozed off from 6-9am…so I thought maybe it was a fluke. AND I’m ever so thankful for one of the mom’s at our children’s school whose family is SO DEAR to our family. She was one I emailed back during my 4:30am emails while ITY bounced in a bouncy seat (his nap spot of choice at Hannah’s Hope)–and she SO KINDLY came to pick up my kids for morning carpool as Rico Suave had to leave at 5ish for Houston. Thank goodness he’ll be back tonight!

Because P and L go to a private school, they don’t get the school bus experience so I invited them to go wait by the mailbox with me for Mrs. Christy! Had to snag some pictures of them on their way of course;)

THEN…it was off to prepare the drinks of choice for the babies inside and gear up for our day!

The 3 of us took off to Frank’s meet-and-greet at preschool (YES! He is going for TWO mornings a week…and I’m sad–BUT it will be time for us to do ITY’s therapies and the 3 siblings will never know or be effected by our craziness!)

Can you tell how Frank feels about having his picture made?

The meet-and-greet went GREAT…so thankful to have some SWEET FRIENDS in his class! Then we came home…and THEN Isaac Temesgen started his crying again. SO…we all loaded up AGAIN…minus Frank who went to play with his girlfriend Kylie…and off to the pediatrician we went to check on those ears. Bad news–ear infections STILL there…so the 2nd antiobiotics are not working. We are trying a 3rd and then going back on TUESDAY to see if there is any change. If not…off to the ENT we go!

Speaking of doctor days…will you keep us in your prayers tomorrow? At 2:30pm, Isaac and I will take off to the urologist to have another ultrasound on his kidneys to test the severity of his kidney reflux. It will not be fun or pretty–and although he has been home 7 weeks…it is still a very short time and I don’t want him to be afraid or upset or uncomfortable. Will you pray for peace during the procedure…so much peace that he maybe sleeps through it?! (My friend Becca says it’s possible and her son slept through his!) Will you pray that the reflux is gone and if it isn’t that we will have wisdom in how to proceed since the treatment some times involves long term antiobiotics (until he either goes away or at age 3 for surgery)…but since he doesn’t seem to respond to antiobiotics…pray for wisdom and guidance. We have a dear friend whose son has been through this same procedure so I feel so thankful to have a source if we have to go that route. My precious friend Kelly is coming over with her kids to keep my other 3 while we go. I seriously don’t know what I’d do without all my friends helping out while we run here and there…it takes a village indeed! SO THANKFUL! Thank you all for your prayers. So ready to be past this stuff so we can focus on our physical therapies and getting stronger…because ITY has to learn to run circles around his siblings!!!

Ok…so for comic relief–God gave us Frank. I have to share this…as you know our Frank loves to eat sweets. And when EVERYTHING gets quite…it usually means he has found some…

And of course he is wearing his favorite shirt. You know–the one your mom buys your kid at Walmart…and then they insist on wearing it every day! And here he is trying to get in ONE MORE CHOCOLATE COVERED PRETZEL (Kelly…it’s YOUR fault for leaving these treats for us!)…Parker tries to help mommy by putting them up…”JUST ONNNNNEEE MORE!”

AND THEN…he snuck in the garage. I heard the drop of what sounded like a can. AND SURE ENOUGH–someone was in the recycled bin…

By the looks of his lips in that picture up there—he had found ONE LAST SIP…and half of it landed on his shirt! As SOON as he looked up and saw me, he threw it back in the bin! Good boy Frank!

So…there ya have it. The Young’s current action. As you can imagine–most days we all crash around here. Have to share this one I grabbed of Laney loo after school yesterday. She usually runs right up stairs and changes into something FANCY…no, not play clothes–but fancy…because that is the way Laney rolls:). AND THEN…she passes out! Of course usually in her bed—but yesterday it was in the living room…and with the natural light in there—I had to snap a few…

And I love up close…where you can count those beautiful eyelashes!
I’ve gotten a few emails with questions about my camera, settings and what I do to make my pictures appear sharp.

Here goes my best answers:

1. I shoot with a Canon 5D–but that has nothing to do with much…you can create BEAUTIFUL images with Nikon D40s. It’s more about lighting, settings and composure. BUT–to answer questions my current camera is the 5D. I’d love to upgrade–but I can’t justify it…and mine does what I want it to do.

2. My favorite lens right now is my “mommy lens”. It’s the 24-70L and I love it because it’s got versatility and can be taken down to 2.8 f.stop allowing more natural light in. If you are just starting out and just want to practice–whether you are a Canon or Nikon shooter–I’d recommend starting with the cheaper 50mm lens and just practicing lots around the house. Yes, I’m a former photographer–BUT I love JUST photography MY kids now:). I get contacted lots for sessions–but happily refer them to an amazing network of photographer friends here whose work I just love! If you need a referral and you are in my area…just ask:).

3. Sharpness. I love some sharp pictures—but as you can see in the candid images up top–most of those aren’t that sharp simply because I was capturing a quick moment and the lighting was all wrong. BUT give me Laney loo asleep in a room with beautiful natural light…and I can make an image sharp. It’s not about photoshop. It’s all done in camera. I NEVER like to have my shutter speed below 1/250 for sharpness reasons–and the HIGHER you can get it the FASTER your shutter is clicking so the SHARPER your picture can be. Sharpness will also be reflected in the amount of grain you let in an image–and this has to do with exposure–so you want your image also properly exposed. SO–in order to get the shutter speed up there for the eyelash image–I put the shutter on 1/320—I had to bring my ISO up to 800. To allow the most light in and to create the bokeh I wanted (blur in the background) I put my f.stop at my favorite 2.8 with this lens. AND all those things lined up together made for a perfectly exposed image. AND I really could have done the SAME thing with a Nikon D40. SO you really don’t need to run out and buy an expensive camera body–but I will say you might need a nice lens:). Better to have a nice lens than a nice camera body.

OK…so that’s my photography 2 cents for the night!

Hope you all have a GREAT night! Off to TRY and get some sleep!!!

XOXO

Andrea

I am crying from laughing at Frank! I love that kid! You can’t blame him. Those chocolate covered pretzels are great and diet dr. pepper is oh so yummy! I’m sure Richard loved that, but he can’t talk…..6 doughnuts. I’ll have to watch him extra carefully tomorrow.

Caytie - August 19, 2010 - 11:43 pm

Will be praying for little Isaac and his momma as you go to the doctors! Your children are just beautiful and that Frank is a crack-up reminds of my 4th, she’s hysterical like him! Loved the bows on Laney and the pics of her sleeping are drop dead gorgeous…nothing like a sleeping child!

Jen - August 19, 2010 - 11:48 pm

beautiful pictures. I’m w/ Frank, I have a sweet tooth, too:)

I was wondering if you had any suggestions about airport homecoming. We want our kiddos to get to see our little girl before the crowd. Someone suggested we tell everyone to meet at baggage claim except for our kids. Just curious…

Elle J - August 20, 2010 - 12:03 am

God will be with you and Isaac tomorrow, I know you will find His peace. Stay strong and keep praying throughout your visit; I will be too. Your children are an adorable, cute, handsome, beautiful four! Uh, love your photos (and the numbers on your stairs!!!).

Shannon - August 20, 2010 - 12:03 am

Love the picture of your sweet kiddos waiting for school and the precious ones of Laney too! I wish we were closer because I know our girls would be BFFS!! And Frank and my Jo would be best buds too…she does the same thing when she’s caught doing something a little naughty:) Sooo glad you offered up the bow tutorial. I was hoping but didn’t want to ask! It’s not like you have anything going…heehee!! Also….thank you for sharing about the Dockery’s! What an amazing family and I’ll be getting my shirt asap!! Love, Shannon

Of course you can count on my prayers for ITY and you!

And Frank … how he cracks me up. You know, he reminds me of Kristi’s son George. Both are personality PLUS!
Thanks for the photo tips … I’ve got lots to learn.

Yay! Can’t wait to read the bow making tutorial, and how fun you are going to make it into a ladies’ night out. I’m hoping to do the same one of these days when I refresh myself on it all. Got info on doing the twisty gymboree like ones yesterday.

Christy - August 20, 2010 - 7:15 am

and PS – still praying for Isaac!

Heather - August 20, 2010 - 7:34 am

My son had ear infections all the time until I took him to the chiropractor. No ear infections since. I took him 4 times (pretty close together) and *poof* gone. It’s so much more natural than antibiotics. They rub his neck and back and it got the stuff out of his head. Just FYI.

i will be praying for isaac…we went through ENT issues with my boys…such tough days for a mama. i think frank should have his own facebook fan club…that child is HILARIOUS. πŸ™‚

Sara - August 20, 2010 - 12:30 pm

Thanks for the photography advice! I have a D40 and am wanting to get a new lens. I’ve been looking at the 50mm. I have a 55-200 but I’m finding to get shots of little ones I need to be in close and be able to have that shutter work fast.

Kelly - August 20, 2010 - 12:39 pm

Thanks for the camera info! That wil help a lot. Praying that your son does fine with the kidney reflux issue. Our son was too tested for that around 8 months (found out he has hydronephrosis) so I understand how it feels to have your baby going through that. I think its eaiser on them though when they are younger though because they do just sleep a whole lot more. Praying for your baby and (and mommy!)

Megan - August 20, 2010 - 12:51 pm

Laney is a girl after my own heart! Love the fancy outfit (and her school outfit is adorable too).
