Scripture for my heart today…

1 Thessalonians 5…

Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, β€œPeace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.

May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.

Brothers, pray for us. Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.”

My 6 year old son’s memory verse this month…so perfect for my heart too…

You are my God, and I will praise you; you are my God, and I will exalt you. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” Psalm 118:28-29

What are the truths in these verses?

How do they speak to your heart?

What do they encourage you to do?

Truely–He is a faithful Father. His love endures forever–and He is faithful…always faithful. Even when things are hard–I will give thanks. For His love is good–and it endures forever. I will exalt Him–even when things don’t make sense. Or when I’m not sure the next step. BUT–the God who made our beginning…is also the God of the ending…the ending of each circumstance–each story–each hardship–each triumph. He is always good, and He has a purpose for every thing. Praying you know Him deeper, rest in Him more and understand His love through and through today.

LOVE this and needed it today. I’ve had one of those days and lost my cool with the kids a few times:(

Love the scripture that states: Test everything. Hold onto the good. Avoid every kind of evil.
It’s a scripture that has led me to growth so much over the years.

Been thinking about and praying for you today!

Tiffany - November 8, 2010 - 7:51 pm

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus…whew did I need this today. I was wallowing in a pitty party as I nurse a husband who just had ankle surgery while managing a house that seems in complete chaos…need to spend some time with God and this verse…letting it sink into my heart…don’t think joy or thankfulness ever crossed my mind today. Thanks Andrea.

Dawn - November 8, 2010 - 8:10 pm

God wants us to focus on – HIM in prayer. thanksgiving, and joy because HE is our EVERYTHING!!!! RELEARNING THAT DAILY!

Staci - November 8, 2010 - 8:13 pm

Thank you for this exhortation for all of your readers! Thank you for sharing your heart and honoring God’s faithfulness in the process… His love endures forever!!!

A few things you must know about…

I’m still reflecting on that adoption post I told you guys I’ve been thinking about. And in the mean time–God continues to put so much on my heart…He continues to burden my heart for orphans…for the poor…for the widows…even for children in our own community who aren’t technically orphans but miss the guidance and love of parents because of difficult circumstances. I will write the post in God’s timing–but He is still teaching me…and I don’t want to be consumed with convincing others when only the Holy Spirit can convince someone of what is true and the way to live. The Lord is moving our family’s hearts in big ways–and the more He moves us…the more I realize we just weren’t made for this world…yet we were made to do much in it. I dream of so many things—having a quiver full of little ones who need a mommy and daddy’s love—moving to Zambia or Uganda or Ethiopia…or any where for that matter where we could pour love into children for His name’s sake—I even dream of homeschooling (yes–call me crazy, but I do dream about it now and again)…BUT God hasn’t given me the go-ahead on any of those yet…and for now they are all wonders if they are part of His will for my life. I will continue to seek Him and trust Him. His ways are higher than my ways…

And while I dream–I can get caught up in the questions, the what ifs, the maybe could be’s–OR I could just let them go…leave them at the cross…and do something right where I am. Any of you with me?

I wanted to share a few areas of need with you. Granted needs are every where. But that is what the body of Christ is for. To hear needs–to pray how we might can be used to meet them…and to take a step of faith when we feel called. Here are 3 different needs. Will you prayerfully consider how you might can be used to meet one of them?

Sixty Feet

Did you know that most of the water in Uganda is polluted–yet 60 feet down it’s chrystal clear and perfect to drink? In a country overflowing with orphans–many sick with water-borne illnesses…just 60 feet under there dusty feet is clear, clean water for them to drink! If you have never heard about the ministry Sixty Feet I promise it will be worth your time spending just 10 minutes on their website. After discovering children of all ages living in an old prison building–they are doing something. They are just normal people…living normal lives…but forever changed by what they have seen. And they are not okay with leaving these children any other way but loved and cared for. Here (in video below) is the lady whose heart first stepped in…and she is beautifully followed by several couples here in our area. Some of them will be at the women’s retreat…and I can’t wait for you to hear from them and what God is doing. They are teaching these children their worth. They are loving them through Christ. They are setting them free from oppression. If you have been praying about joining a ministry in which to serve…it’s new–it’s got God’s hands all over it–and it just might rock your world…in a very good way…

Adoption

We have some friends getting ready to turn in their dossier…and they are doing a t-shirt fundraiser as they try to meet their goal in preparation to turn in their dossier (the completed documents that will put them on the waitlist finally!!!) Meet the Hemphills!!! They are selling their tshirts for just $20 (+$5 for shipping). Here are their awesome shirts that will help bring home their child…

Isn’t that a cool shirt?! They are calling it their “amazing grace” shirt because they have the lyrics “I once was lost, but now I’m found.” LOOOVE these. Okay…so for those of you who aren’t adopting and you aren’t sure if you want to where a shirt that says “adoption”…well—let me tell you…you can tell people that YOU were adopted as a daughter of the King…you can tell them that your shirt helped bring a baby home to their forever family…OR you can tell them you follow this blog where this girl is crazy about orphans and adoptions and such…and you just seem to be jumping in with serving others and it’s SO MUCH FUN to help families!!!! What a honor and privilege!!! When we did our fundraiser during our adoption–I can’t tell you how DEAR each and every family is that helped us!!! They will FOREVER be part of our story!!! How cool is that to be a part of?!?! To purchase one of their shirts…go to their blog by clicking HERE.

Prayer

I am reminded how much children who need families throughout the world–who are waiting…need us to be on our hands and knees praying for them. Interceding on their behalf. We pray daily for our own children…and while we long in our hearts for every child to have a home…we can pray deeply together for those who do not. For the children in situations like in Uganda…whose situations have yet to be discovered like those of 60Feet. Oh Lord Jesus…will you guide and direct your people to find them…to have compassion on them…and to even let us know their stories so we can join helping them! For the children in our country’s foster care…who feel abandoned…unloved…unwanted—who are about to age out of the system with no mentors…no role-models…no mom or dad to come home to. Oh Father…will you show us how we can care for them…will you raise up families to love them…to care for them…to tell them of their worth! For the children who have come home…who are struggling in their new roles as sons and daughters…who have never experienced love and are struggling learning how to accept it…Give patience and guidance Lord to their parents…give them creativity on ways to speak to their child’s hearts…teach them how to love and parent in the Spirit…and give them perserverance to not give up when it’s hard. Let’s remind one another to pray on their behalf…and to press one another on to love and good deeds…whatever that might look like on their behalf…oh that we could represent the body of Christ beautifully in this way!!!

Love to you all…thank you for running with me.

I can’t wait to find out more about Sixty Feet. I am trying to highlight some organizations in my blog world this month. Great shirt!

Elora - November 5, 2010 - 10:00 am

I read below where you feel a “storm-brewing” in your heart concerning orphan care & adoption. Girl. If I could reach across my computer screen & grab your hands and hug you, I would. I found your site youtubing “gotcha days” for Ethiopia. There are no words for the storm brewing in my own heart, but I know you know, and I know God’s heart for these little ones is love…and a home…

Just thought I’d drop a line of encouragement. Your video brought me to tears. I’m so thankful for you stepping out in obedience.

Kim - November 5, 2010 - 11:24 am

Oh girl … I know all about that storm brewing feeling.
I am running with you!
All. The. Way.
Love & Blessings from Hong Kong,

You are incredible woman!!! Always speaking exactly what I’m thinking. I’ve been lurking and haven’t left you, but here to say I love you and all those things you feel stirred to do, are my desires too. But I wait for His will. Quite frankly, my husband thinks living in Ethiopia isn’t an option. But I’m sure if God saw fit to put us there, He would make it known to the leader of our family. And those home school dreams….. yep, been there done that. Oh how I have considered home schooling. And yes, people had thought I’d lost my mind. But I’m sold out for HIM and whatever HIS will is for our lives and those thoughts aren’t placed in our hearts and minds by accident girlfriend!

Thanks for the links to help support another adoptive family! Off to buy a new shirt to add to my collection! Much love, xoxox

Love this post — and your heart! πŸ™‚ (ps – I have some book recommendations on my blog I think you might enjoy!) πŸ™‚

I am thankful Thanksgiving Tree

My heart overflows with thanksgiving today…for so many reasons…so it was fitting to make a Thankful Tree—which is our family’s tradition to do every year. Last year, we painted our tree on kraft paper so it could be displayed and then thrown away later. You can see it here. I bought a little die cut last here at Hobby Lobby that is shaped like little leaves. Each day my little ones each write ONE thing they are thankful for–and it goes on the Thankful Tree. It is SO MUCH FUN to read them all at the end of the month. I’ll never forget one of Laney’s from last year. She was 3 years old and said she was thankful for “mermaid shout”. When I asked her what that was–she said it is when a mermaid is scared–all she has to do is shout. OF COURSE that is what that is!!! And–she was thankful!

THIS year we are SO thankful to have 4 children…and oh my–it’s already November and we haven’t even put up our traditional painted tree yet. To be honest, I was thinking–if I’m busy NOW…I can only imagine how busy I’ll be in years to come…so I MIGHT need a “recycable tree”…so THIS year–I painted our tree on canvas. This one can be used year after year…or at least for the years we are too crazy to pull out the kraft paper and paint a new one!

I bought canvas at an art store a few years ago when it was on sale–I cut it the length and width I wanted and then cut the roll it came on to help support it at the top and weigh it down on the bottom.

I stitched a seem across the ends of both the top and bottom so I could slide the roll into both…

Then, I slid a ribbon through the top one which helps hang it later…

It’s a canvas ready to be painted:)

I just used a pen to draw my tree before I painted (a normal person would use a pencil…but you can’t find practical stuff like that around here when you need it!)

Then I painted in the lines…for the most part:). (a normal person would also go buy brown paint. BUT I was out…and Parker man wasn’t feeling good today so we were parking here all day. SO…I googled “what colors make brown”…yes I didn’t know…and just in case you didn’t either–it’s Yellow + Blue + Red…or Green + Red…or Yello + Purple…or Orange + Blue. I ran out of yellow, too, by the way…and I googled “how to make yellow” and apparently I’m not that bright b/c yellow is a primary color and you can’t make it…and that’s when I thought to mix orange with blue:). Anyway…here’s the painting in action…and don’t ya think mixing paint to make brown made the tree look cooler anyway b/c you can see some of the different hues? Just sayin’…some times when things require more work…it actually makes it more beautiful in the end:). I think there might be an analogy there;-)

After we finished the tree, we made turkey HANDPRINTS!!! SO FUN! We did the different colors in steps though and had to wait for each color to dry!

Just in case you wanted to know–Isaac DOES NOT LIKE making handprints. Note to self–keep this in mind for future craft projects…but the finished product was worth it…RIGHT Isaac?! Maybe he’ll thank me later?

NOW…we just have to die cut all of our leaves tomorrow…stick them in our “thanksgiving jar” that Mama Judy gave us last year…and the fun can begin!!! The kids look forward to this EVERY day…and it’s so sweet to watch thankfulness cultivate in their hearts!!! I love that some of the stems look like crosses…a reminder of what we are most thankful for.

Today I’m thankful for…

…although Parker wasn’t feeling well—we live in a country where I can take him to the doctor in the morning. We’ll have to cancel Isaac’s PT–but we’ll have a work out another day…praying Parker feels better soon…and thankful we have a Great Physician that heals…

…thankful that Isaac is home…and that although we are still figuring one another out–we’re getting there—I am thankful when I say, “Momma wants a kiss, kiss” that he leans his forehead toward me and giggles so I can kiss his little forhead…I’m so thankful he is getting better and being healed in so many way…so thankful for little and big things in his life…

I’m thankful that we celebrated another year of Frank’s life yesterday…although I’m sad to see him turn 2…I am thankful he is in good health…and that the biggest issues he has are eczema and his attitude…oh what a reason to be thankful!

…so thankful for Laney’s heart and the bond that we have as the girls of the house…YET–she continues to pray for a sister from Africa…you have to love her compassinate heart…oh this momma is thankful…

I am so thankful that I am married to a patient man…who puts up with my craziness…who is quick to forgive, slow to speak and slow to become angry…thankful for his silliness…and thankful that he also thinks life is too short and following God with abandon is the way to rock this place!

So many reasons to be thankful. What are you thankful for today??? How is God blessing you??? How do you see His hand EVEN in the midst of hardship?

A PRECIOUS sister in Christ reminded me tonight–HE KNOWS THE END OF YOUR STORY. Did you hear that??? In the midst of whatever hard thing you are going through–HE knows the end…because HE planned it!!! It will bring Him glory…He can be trusted…and IT WILL BE WORTH IT! Aren’t you THANKFUL we serve a God who knows the END of OUR stories…He knows the END of our trials and their purposes!!! And in Him…it is all finished—because if He can use us to receive praise and glory…it WILL be worth it…and in the end you will come out dancing!!! Psalm 30:11 “You turned my wailing into dancing, you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with JOY.”

Really…there is so much to be thankful for…and I’m bursting to share some of the goodness with you…but I’ll say this–if you are planning on coming to the adoption momma retreat…get ready. I’m excited about what GOD wants to do there!!! And once again–I see Him working as we plan the details—and I am just just amazed and THANKFUL!

Hope you all have a great week. I’ll probably be MIA for most of it with a little one down and out. And by the way…if you wonder how I pulled the tree off today among other things…I should have totally taken a picture of the sink and laundry;). Some times you just need a break from the chores and to have a little fun:).

Andrea:)

What are you thankful for today??? Take a minute…think of just one thing…leave it in the comments!!! After you do…you just might see how contagious reflecting on what you are thankful for and why we are all about this activity as a family year after year!SOOOO…go head…think about it–and let me know! I can’t wait to read later what YOU are thankful for most today!!!

Tonight, I am thankful that HIS mercies are new every morning and for HIS grace. As a homeschooling mom with an emotionally fragile toddler, some days are hard and this was one of them. But tonight, as I reflect on my day, I am not walking in condemnation. I am walking in His grace, and knowing that tomorrow is a new day with new promise….and feeling very thankful. And, sort of wishing that I was not so tired and could be creative and make a super cute ‘thankful tree!’ Thanks for sharing that!!

Makenzie - November 3, 2010 - 7:00 am

What a cute idea! I love the tree. Today I’m thankful for all the encouraging friends I’ve met in the adoption community!

Larisa Maibach - November 3, 2010 - 7:04 am

I am thankful for so many things, but to choose just one – it would have to be Jesus Christ and His unfailing love.

Christy - November 3, 2010 - 7:20 am

Oh how cute!!! I just may have to copy this if it’s ok. πŸ˜‰ Right now we are clipping up leaves each day with tiny clothespins to a ribbon going across my drapes. This is way nicer! πŸ™‚ I am thankful for YOU and others who are so real and honest in sharing the emotional ups and downs of following Christ and reminding everyone that it is worth it all and brings joy unspeakable! THANK YOU!

Heather Kelley - November 3, 2010 - 7:28 am

Awesome idea! We might have do this every day of the year. I am so thankful that God has been showing me that He is totally involved in every single detail of our lives. I am at peace more now that I have realized that.

I am thankful that despite all my stressing and worrying about sending my firstborn to kindergarten, she loves it. She wishes it was 7 days a week. And today, she gets to try riding the bus for the first time. I was thinking of changing my mind but when I opened her door this morning she said, “Today’s the day I get to ride the bus!” I’m thankful for her joy and boldness in the face of my mommy worry.

Oh…and I am thankful for refinement…I know that sounds crazy, but that is what the Lord has laid on my heart today. …that God loves me so much to not let me stay where I am…and He is faithful! It is my tendency to feel insecure in refining things (like I don’t “measure up”…ha! as if I ever could!), but today, I am THANKFUL. Change me, Lord! (Heb. 12:5)

Jenny - November 3, 2010 - 8:47 am

Seriously, you and your crafty-ness! πŸ™‚ Love the tree! And it’s a good thing you don’t live too close or I’d be convincing you to make one of those for me. What a precious keepsake for your family! I am thankful for you and the ways your blog reaches so many and brings Him glory. And I’m continually thankful for the ways God brings Himself glory through circumstances in my life that I would have never humanly chosen, but have refined me in more ways than I can count!

I am thankful for an awesome adoption community where ideas are shared.

I am thankful for this family of faith. Even though I don’t know you and may never meet you on this side of Heaven, I have benefited from your writings. I appreciate your willingness to be real and teachable – in that, you teach all of us!

Deborah L. King - November 3, 2010 - 3:33 pm

I’m thankful for your blog. You are such an inspiration, not to mention great crafty ideas. I hope you don’t mind if I copy your thankful tree idea.

admin - November 3, 2010 - 5:34 pm

P.S.
LARA—for a non-crafty tree—think about collecting sticks and putting them in a vase!!! Just like the Lent Tree I did in March! You tie little pieces of string in punched holes from each of your leaves and hang them all over the sticks on your stick arrangement!!!

AND OF COURSE copy away the rest of you!!! This is SUCH a sweet tradition!!! I caught myself saying to my kids, “Ok guys–only 1 leave today…no, only pick ONE…” And then some days they’d beg for THREE..and they’d keep on going after 3 and I’d say “Okay, okay…that’s enough being thankful!” Seriously—isn’t that something crazy to say to your kids!!! This activity is so cool like that!!!!

Staci - November 3, 2010 - 6:31 pm

I’m thankful that i just saw your post sharing a non-crafty alternative for those of us who would need a week to pull off something as creative as your painted tree! πŸ™‚ Definitely going to do the sticks in a vase with paper leaves. Thanks for sharing your heart and encouraging others through your blog… I always enjoy your posts!

Happy Birthday to Frank!

Today was a very happy day in Frank’s life…and IMO–a sad one in mine! My baby boy turned TWO! UGH. That just sounds like a toddler and not a baby. I sure have enjoyed saying “I have two one-year-olds”…so today that changed and our sweet little man turned TWO! We kept it simple. VERY simple. We just had a few little friends over for a Thomas the Train birthday party. Yes…on a Monday morning and not on a Saturday. Seriously—it was the greatest thing EVER. I’m not sure about you–but spending time with family can be hard enough on the weekends…SO–we decided to give our friends a break–give mommy a break–and since none of our little 1-2 year old friends are even in school…we had a PLAYDATE birthday!!! It was simple. It was fun. It was perfect for the way we like to roll:) AND since it was in the MORNING…and since we all know what Frankie-baby LOVES…this cake just made since for a 10am party!
My sweet sister scooted over–and it seems to be the tradition for me to snap the pictures while Aunt April does the honor of delivering the cake full of candles–and in this case…just TWO! I don’t know if our Frankie-baby likes all eyes on him…OH STOP my beating heart…I could just GOBBLE his serious self RIGHT UP!Doesn’t he look like he’s REALLY concentrating the candle blowing out action right here…
“OH Aunt April!!! That wasn’t so bad at all!!! And now I’m TWO and I can have a DOUGH-NAUGH!”

Frankie baby’s favorite new think is his foldable travel Thomas track and engines!!!(And YES Liz, I will be taking these on outings with me and conveniently whipping them out like I have a playroom in my purse;)
EVEN the olders ones love them…

We had ALL breakfast foods…fruit, pumpkin muffins, sausage balls, doughnuts…but my favorite thing I have to say were the super easy sausage balls and dip! NOW…if you like sausage balls but you’ve never made a dip for them…you have to try THIS!For the sausage balls–add just 2 cups of biscuit mix, 10 ounces of sharp cheddar cheese and 1 lb of sausage. Get everything at room temp–mix it together with your hands until blended and then roll in 1 inch balls. Cover baking sheet with foil and then spray with non-stick spray. Cook for 10 minutes or until golden brown. THEN…for the dip, dip.

Let me get Southern and grandma on you for a second. Put in 4-5 heaping large spoonfuls of mayo (I like Duke’s)…maybe about 1/2 cup. Then add a spoonful of mustard and then a spoonful of creole mustard. If it’s too strong add some more mayo. If it’s too mayo tasting–add a little bit of each mustard. And oh my—it is SOOOO yummy with these…

And all good things have to come to an end (or do they…I don’t think they do at our house!)…but we did have to tell our friends bye! It was a fun Thomas and Friends party indeed!

Happy Adoption Month! I’ve loved following your adoption story! I just wanted to let you know that I linked to your story today on my blog.

My husband and I are living in Zambia (Lusaka, a few hours south of Ndola) and I am off to comment on the six seeds article! πŸ™‚

A Halloween sneak peak from the Youngs…

SO…you’ve got the people who don’t do Halloween at all. Then you’ve got the people who go crazy with the scarey stuff. And then you’ve got the people who just aren’t right…who have a little too much fun with family themes…and have a little too much fun with role play. Um…ya think we fall into that last category?

The Young Family takes on Star Wars – October 31, 2010

You’d think we were Star Wars freaks by the looks of our costumes. (And the Clone Trooper there…that just came with the wallpaper–I was Boba Fett…more pictures to come…but had too much fun putting that one together and I just had to share our costumes from tonight!) You’d never know that Richard is the only one who has seen Star Wars in our family! He was a fan back in the day when he was a little guy–and this was Parker and Laney’s idea…and we had so much fun going door-to-door as you can imagine!!!

And…Frank’s birthday is TOMORROW!!! Can you believe he will be TWO!? Oh…where does the time go? I want to savor EVERY moment and live each day to it’s fullest!!! Happy birthday Frankie-baby…we LOVE you!

P.S. We need YOUR comments!!! SixSeedsTv asked our family to write an article for National Adoption Month! SO…our article will be on their website for the next 30 days!!! For EVERY comment…they will donate $2 to Wiphan!!! Will you leave a comment and help spread the word??? The link is here: http://sixseeds.tv/s/content/adoption/662-adoption_the_young_family
