Melkam Yelidet Beaal!

That’s “Merry Christmas” in Ethiopia!!! Yes, TODAY is Christmas day in Ethiopia!!! One of my dear friends who lives in Ethiopia sent me a link explaining how their country celebrates Christmas. As Isaac gets older, we want to celebrate this special day traditionally as they do–but needless to say this morning we didn’t make it to early Ganna mass;). Maybe when he’s a bit older to understand we’ll join the local Ethiopian orthadox church on this special day. But I can definitely attempt to explain the game also called ganna to the children and encorporate as much as we can–even if we are playing Christmas music and remembering what today means for our son’s birth country. So…a little bit of how this day is celebrated…

Ethiopia (and especially the Ethiopian Orthodox Church) still use the old Julian calendar, so the celebrate Christmas on January 7th, not December 25th! The Christmas celebration in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church is called Ganna. Most people go to Church on Christmas day.

Many people fast (don’t eat anything) on their ‘Christmas Eve’ (6th). At dawn on the morning of Ganna, people get dressed in white. Most people wear a traditional garment called a shamma. It’s a thin white cotton piece of cloth with brightly colored stripes across the ends. It’s worn like a toga. If you live in a big town or city you might wear ‘western’ clothes. The early Ganna mass starts at 4am!

The Ethiopian capital city is Addis Ababa. It’s a modern city. Most people who live outside big cities live in round house made of mud-plastered walls which have thatched cone-shaped roofs. Sometimes houses in the country are rectangular and made of stone.

The design of Ethiopian Church is similar to the houses. In the country, they are often very old and have been carved out of rock. In cities, modern churches are built in three circles, each within the others.

The choir sings from the outer circle. Everyone who goes to church for the Ganna celebrations is given a candle. The people walk around the church three times in a solemn procession, holding the candles. They then go to the second circle to stand during the service. The men and boys are separated from the women and girls. The center circle is the most important and holy place in the church and is where the priest serves the Holy Communion or mass.

It’s also a tradition that one of the Wise Men who visited Jesus came from Ethiopia.

Around the time of Ganna, the men and boys play a game that is also called ganna. It’s played with a curved stick and a round wooden ball, a bit like hockey.

Traditional Christmas foods in Ethiopia include wat which is a thick and spicy stew that contains meat, vegetables and sometimes eggs (sounds yummy!). Wat is eaten on a ‘plate of injera – a flat bread. Pieces of the injera are used as an edible spoon to scoop up the wat.

Twelve days after Ganna, on 19th January, Ethiopians start the three day celebration of Timkat. It celebrated the baptism of Jesus. Children walk to church services in a procession. They wear the crowns and robes of the church youth groups that they belong to. Adults wear the shamma. The priests wear red and white robes and carry embroidered fringed umbrellas.

Musical instruments are played during the Timkat procession. The sistrum is a percussion instrument with tinkling metal disks a bit like a vertical tambourine. A makamiya, a long T-shaped prayer stick is used to keep the rhythm and is also used by the priests and a stick to lean on during the long Timkat church service!

Ethiopian men also play a sport called yeferas guks. It’s played on horseback and the men throw ceremonial lances at each other (sounds rather dangerous!).

People don’t give and receive present during Ganna and Timkat. Sometimes children might be given a small gift of some clothes from their family members. It’s more a time for going to church, eating lots and playing games!

I wish I was there right now celebrating with our little one! This made me feel a little closer to our child today! ๐Ÿ™‚

Sandi - January 7, 2011 - 3:21 pm

I think it is so fabulous that you are celebrating Ethiopian traditional holidays! Even though in my heart I feel called to Asia when hubby says yes, I’m gonna get my boys ready for all possibilities! I found some traditional Ethiopian recipes that we are going to try at

Predictable Me - January 8, 2011 - 11:59 pm

I truly enjoy your blog. I just joined today. I myself started a blog today please feel free to stop by my blog and follow. I also wanted to say you have the nicest page I’ve seen. Very professional and beautiful. Its actually peaceful.

Retreat breakouts and info…

WHEW!!! You know if I ever skip a few days blogging…it’s because I’m busy as a bee–and that I have been!!! I’ve been not only chasing my 4 littles 6 and under—but also packaging tee-shirts to fundraise for the retreat (other than the hotel the adoption moms coming only had to pay $100 for the ENTIRE weekend!) SO…it’s required some fundraising on this end and lots of coordination to pull it all off! We STILL have about 3 more breakouts to tell you about…and from now to the retreat we will be featuring some of our breakout session and main session leaders so you can get a sneak peak at what is to come for the 250 women attending!

FIRST–as you know…we tweaked the name from Created TO Care…to Created FOR Care. We we not only created to care for others…for our family, our children, orphans and others…but we were ALSO created to be cared FOR. And this is what the retreat’s purpose REALLY is: To connect adoption moms to one another and encourage them into a deeper connection with Christ—to see how they are CARED FOR and created to be cared for by their Creator and by His provision in one another.

SECOND–our verse and how it ties in with our logo. THE SPARROWS. If you are a blog reader of mine and have followed our journey–then you might remember how God has encouraged me and spoken to my heart through reminding me of His provision and purpose through this small creation of His. Just for your entertainment…He seems to put these little guys in my path when He is trying to teach me…that the broken need healing…and each of us matter deeply to Him (remember the little bird outside OfficeMax?) OR do you remember the bird that was waiting for us out side the pulmonologist that day…when I was so weary…and the song he sang??? I felt God just reminding me that HE would be my strength in this journey. Or the old hymn…how His eye is even on the sparrow…so I know He is watching and caring for me. And I couldn’t help but smile when I saw the verse laid on my heart written in a post before I ever knew my son’s name. I LOVE this verse for SO many reasons…and it truly applies to our weekend in more ways than one…

“Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young–a place near your altar, O LORD Almighty, my King and my God.” Psalm 84:3.

and finally THIRD: are you READY to see just SOME of the breakout sessions for the weekend??? Oh I’m so excited! Visit our new retreat website to see the breakout sessions I’ve posted so far–tomorrow I’ll be adding a few more…but right now I still have lots of t-shirt packaging to catch up on!!! SO…head on over the the new Created for Care website and check them out! (I’ve still got some tweaking to do and lots to add there–but we’ll be sending out sign ups for breakouts at the end of the week so I thought I’d let you all go ahead and have a sneak peak!)

There are a few things not even on their that are going to be AMAZING that we will do!!! I have meetings every night this week concerning the retreat…and I’ll be a busy bee until then–but to be a part of caring for many of YOU…it is so worth it!

Leigh Ann Harris - January 5, 2011 - 4:42 pm

Hey Andrea! I will be driving to the retreat from the most northern part of Indiana (right on the Michigan state line) and I could not be more excited!! God’s timing for this “break” is perfect! As I spent some time with the Lord this morning, I read Matthew 10:28-30…and of course, I love the last part of those verses…”So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” God is good! Can’t wait to “meet” you and all of the other moms!

JonesEthiopia - January 5, 2011 - 8:29 pm

Can’t wait to be there! Thank you for all the work you’re doing to make this weekend so special for all of us.

I can’t wait for this retreat!

More crazy to our crazy:)

Sooo…I’m not what I would say is a dog person. BUT I have 3 boys and a little girl…so I knew at SOME point they would want a pet. I asked my dear Facebook friends for advice…and I got everything from what breeds we should think about to personal emails telling me NOT to do it…for a variety of reasons. SO…we went in JUST LOOKING…and with a checklist.

It went like this…
Hypoallergenic.
Lab, Collie or Golden Retriever.
Non shedding.
Outside dog.
Older puppy.
Male.
GO in and make a list…come home and do the research…

ALL the while I could hear the advice “your life is crazy already…get a fish”…

I truly tried to pump my oldest up that he really needed a fish. “Mom, what happened to our last fish? AND–this will be my dog…my responsibility…”

We went to look…WITH our list…and the funniest part was Richard wasn’t with us because he had an appointment else where. I forgot to tell him about our little outing UNTIL our ride home. (I’m married to a man just as crazy as me…and thankfully we both roll with just about anything:).

We played with puppies…we played with labs…we played with a Saint Bernard that knocked us all over and had my side hurting I was laughing SO HARD! I kept trying to tell the worker that he was NOT the dog for us but all I could get out laying there on the ground with a Saint Bernard over me was, “I don’t think, I don’t think…” I could hardly catch my breath—and Parker, Laney AND Frank had ALL climbed the fence and where screaming at mommy laying on the ground laughing her side off! Isaac was in the stroller and didn’t think it was funny. AND THEN…in came Rosie…

She didn’t fit ANYTHING on our list.

SHE is a 3 year old mut mixed breed:). A little shephard…who knows what else–you can tell she is a shedder…she should be an outside dog but she’s spent more time inside than out…but she is the SWEETEST little thing. And she just might cure my dog fear and soften my heart to furry critters a bit. I SAID A BIT. THIS GUY on the other hand…he’s head over heels…

And how do you say no to THAT?

So imagine this. Rich calls at noon to ask where we are. AT THE TIME we were just leaving church and crusing north. So…I said just that. Then we kept cruising. And 3.5 hours later we had spent 3 hours at the animal shelter—and we were on our way home. He called again to say he was on his way home–asked where we were and I responded, “Oh–just leaving the animal shelter.” SILENCE. “Um–Ang…you didn’t get a dog DID YOU?” I respond–“Oh no, not a DOG…um–I wouldn’t call her a dog..maybe an older toddler. I mean…a 3 year old is a toddler still right?” Nice huh…gotta love a hubby who rolls with it:)

So…once AGAIN…I said I did something I said I’d never do. And best of all–when you get a dog from the humane society they aren’t expensive and her monthly upkeep should be less than a trip or Wii video game. And since Parker and Laney are often STUCK home with TWO babies napping (no gas needed!) and this house has a no video game mush to your brain policy…a dog to run and play with and learn responsiblity and compassion might have seemed crazy to some…but for us–I think adding this crazy to our already crazy seemed like a perfect fit:).

The only problem so far–I got woken up at 7am NOT by Rosie–but by a bright-eyed little boy asking if he could go let Rosie out and play with her. So far so good…and I promise our next addition will just be a fish…I think;).

I just LOVE how it looks like she has “hearts” outlining her eyes! Look closely…can you see it? PERFECT for your family with such BIG hearts! ๐Ÿ™‚

Alison - January 3, 2011 - 2:10 pm

Oh my goodness!! Rosie it just adorable!!!! My kids are begging for a dog too! Gonna try to hold them off for a few more years…hopefully! ๐Ÿ™‚

Gini - January 3, 2011 - 2:32 pm

She is beautiful! It sounds like she’ll be a pretty cool addition to your family. ๐Ÿ™‚ (BTW, LOVE the new photos in your header!)

Joy - January 3, 2011 - 2:36 pm

Oh, she’s lovely! And I doubt she will shed any more than a lab, golden, or collie, if that’s any comfort ๐Ÿ™‚ And…having her indoors lots is likely to be good for monitoring interactions and helping her develop all kinds of comfort around kids and people in general…Sure, there’s the occasional inconvenience to having a dog, but I think they far outweigh any of that with what they add to life! Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

Dee Dee Aarseth - January 3, 2011 - 2:51 pm

We have a girl mut and she is THE best. I personally think that mixed breeds are WAY better…something about all that pure bred over and over can kinda blow up in your face sometimes. Anyways I think you did perfectly, girl dogs are much more lady like if you know what I mean… ๐Ÿ™‚ a girl is a good choice…you need to balance out that testosterone in your house!

Erin - January 3, 2011 - 2:52 pm

Awe, Andrea!! Rosie is such a cutie!! I LOVED reading this story, b/c I felt like I was reading my life! Only, we don’t have a dog, and we haven’t traveled to Ethiopia YET for our little one…I felt like I was reading my future story. We are telling our oldest “not yet,” and he LOVES dogs. LOVES THEM. I have said, “Definitely not a dog that sheds…”!! HA! We will see if it turns out like yours! ๐Ÿ™‚

Kelly Johnson - January 3, 2011 - 3:23 pm

She is precious!!! Dogs are the best! Ours is part of our family for sure and our little girl’s bestest friend. She is a lab and sheds more than any dog I’ve ever seen in my life…but every hair is worth it. You made a great decision and did it with your heart–the best way. :c)

Jennifer - January 3, 2011 - 3:45 pm

Nice. I use a dremel on my dogs’ nails. ..just a thought. I got it at Lowe’s, and the one absolutely loves, loves, loves it. She runs and gets on her side when I unplug the charger from the wall. If she had her way she would have them dremeled every day, but the nails don’t grow fast enough.

Jenny - January 3, 2011 - 7:12 pm

Love it!!! This is so sweet!

Bonnie Nieuwstraten - January 3, 2011 - 10:53 pm

Oh, I am laughing! Because I also had a very firm NO dog policy (kind of like my firm NO retreat policy!!) but in late October I also fell prey and we now have an adorable little lhasa who makes me crazy! Have fun!

Jennifer - January 4, 2011 - 12:29 am

OK, I am a reader of your blog and several others, but very rarely comment. But, today I have to. We, too adopted our number 4–from China in March of this year and it has been an AMAZING blessing. I have SO enjoyed so much of what you say about adoption and God’s heart for orphans. AND, how funny is this? Just got a new puppy 3 weeks ago! Definitely more crazy to the already crazy! But-great…and I agree, kids, especially boys, need a dog! Enjoy!

Kim - January 4, 2011 - 7:16 am

You are living the dream! Oh my … Rosie is adorable. I am going to have to sign off quickly before the kids catch a glimpse of your new four legged family member. My older boys have been searing Hong Kong dog rescue website for weeks. I’d give them the green light, but Daddy O isn’t there yet. You got me wondering what would happen if I just did it! Not sure he would roll with it! Ha!

Kim - January 4, 2011 - 7:18 am

P.S. Your new header is over the top cute. But it looks like it is missing a new four legged member of the family?!

Sheila - January 4, 2011 - 12:07 pm

LOVE it! Just what your kids needed and over time you will realize you needed too!

marci - January 4, 2011 - 1:51 pm

PRECIOUS addition to family….real love and play ahead and years of sweetness with Rosie onboard !

Debb - January 4, 2011 - 6:42 pm

Awwww……this dog-lover LOVES this story! Rosie captures my heart via pics, so I can imagine what she is doing to yours! Good move, mom! I agree……what a great present for Parker and Laney! and the rest of the fam! I can’t wait for the post that speaks of how much your hubby has fallen in love with her! {grin}

Rachel Campbell - January 5, 2011 - 1:45 pm

I’m so excited for you guys!!!! All little kids deserve a Dog ๐Ÿ˜‰ … this coming from “very MUCH a dog person” ๐Ÿ™‚ Its Good crazy.

christie - January 5, 2011 - 9:51 pm

We have a mixed breed dog. She is getting ready to turn 8. She has been the BEST dog I have ever met ๐Ÿ™‚ It seems that mixed breeds are best. Congrats on the new addition to the fam!

Day 8 of the Journey of the Magi (our LAST one!)

While I originally thought the Journey of the Magi would last around 2 weeks right up to our Christmas in Ethiopia celebration (January 7th is when they observe Christmas!)…BUT we have little to go on in Matthew’s documentation–but what we do have is rich enough to follow Christmas with their story every year. I wish we could say we ended our Magi story on a good note. But truly–it is awful. Can you imagine? They are warned to go a different route to bypass King Herod–this is for their protection…some times hard things are for our protection. THEN–Herod finds out he has been outwitted by the wisemen–which really ticks King Herod off. I mean, seriously makes him angry. BUT this is really fitting for what is ahead…hard–but fitting.

Matthew 2:13-18 “When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. โ€œGet up,โ€ he said, โ€œtake the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.โ€ So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: โ€œOut of Egypt I called my son.โ€ When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: โ€œA voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.โ€

So…our Magi are told in a dream by God to go another route. God’s plan. A different route…a harder route…a longer route—the first one only took a year…are you serious God? Okay, okay. God’s plan. Herod realized the Magi aren’t coming back to tell him where Jesus is…who disobeys the king…the government…he was filled with rage–this Jesus that the country is talking about and kings come to see–Herod would do anything to stop the world from following this said-to-be King. Herod’s plan? To kill EVERY boy baby under 2 years old and younger in Bethlehem AND its vicinity. To have moms weeping…babies and precious ones dying…to have over 600 families, as historians have estimated, lose their sons and many, many others effected by the loss of family members…and although they knew Herod was the hatred behind the slaying…every time they heard the name Jesus they would know it was because of Herod wanting to kill Jesus that their babies where killed. OUCH. Not a way I want to come into the world…Surely this couldn’t be God’s great idea of how He would get everyone to fall in love with Jesus and follow Him…RIGHT?

I think about the old hymn, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. Sweetest Name I know.” I can’t imagine the pain in these families…all a result of the Magi upsetting King Herod. I have tried to put myself in the shoes of those moms who lost their little ones after the Magi left. We never tell this part of the story at Christmas time do we? YET–this is part of how Jesus came into the world. Truly, it was as if He never even stood a chance. Then you have the entire community wrecked and mourning…do you think those moms ever wondered, “Why my baby boy?” And later…every time she saw Jesus in the streets or heard about him–she would remember the last time she heard his name in the streets and lost her own son. “Yes, he’d be about his age,” she think to herself…”why my baby boy?” I mean, have you ever wondered why the world was so quick to cry “crucify”…or why it wasn’t so popular to follow this Jesus? Of course, He was radical. Of course, He said He was God–and that made some people scratch their heads. But there was also a rather large group who had been directly effected by his name since his birth…and this sets us up for the journey of the cross in the months ahead.

For Jesus–I have to imagine that life even from the beginning just didn’t seem fair. And for these families effected by Herod’s hatred of Jesus–life wasn’t fair either. I don’t have all the answers. In fact, I feel like I have very few. And I also realize my non-believing friends who read my blog scratch their heads and wonder about me half the time any way. I mean…who is this God who lets hard things happen? I mean…if He is God–why doesn’t He just come down and stop it? I wish I could answer all the questions–and while I know little…I do know He desires us to trust Him…He desires to allow Him to heal our wounds…and I don’t understand it…but there is something that happens when we relinquish ourselves completely to Him…and trust in His name.

I also believe that some of these moms eventually trusted and believed in Jesus. And I also believe that at some point–they could have even sung a hymn about His sweet name as He healed their deepest wounds…

Sweetest Name I Know
There’s within my heart a melody
Jesus whispers sweet and low
Fear not, I am with thee, peace, be still
In all of life’s ebb and flow

Though sometimes he leads through waters deep
Trials fall across the way
Though sometimes the path seems rough and steep
See his footprints all the way

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Sweetest name I know
Fills my every longing
Keeps me singing as I go

Feasting on the riches of his grace
Resting โ€˜neath the sheltering wing
Always looking on his smiling face
That is why I shout and sing

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Sweetest name I know
Fills my every longing
Keeps me singing as I go

All my life was wrecked by sin and strife
Discord filled my heart with pain
Jesus swept across these broken strings
And stirred these chords again

Truly, I think we often miss a lot of the hardship Jesus, Himself, came into the world with. I think it’s important to realize it, meditate on it and understand it. I’ve heard pastors and teachers of the gospel say “Jesus came into the world and experienced pain so we could identify with him…” or “so He could identify with us”. I’m not so sure any of us could ever REALLY identify with Jesus, his pain and how hard things really were from the beginning for him. Sure He can identify with you–because He’s been there…but to identify with Him? Wow…we really need to start at the beginning…and think about how hard even the beginning really was. But there was nothing God, Himself, would not do for a personal relationship with YOU. THAT is WHY He came my friends. Because He loves YOU that much. And if you journey in this world and miss THAT–then you have missed everything. Period. And He’s just too good to miss.

So now…our real journey begins. And each day–we’ll store up treasures in our treasure box…writing them down as we go and remember ways we have seen Him…the one worth traveling across the dessert and back for…and He is worth going one step further with…

So much to look forward to in 2011!

And THIS is how we do it! (+ April’s Day 4 in Zambia & Day 7 of the Magi’s Journey)

SOOO…if you have a bucket list—I think everyone needs “attended an airport home-coming for someone I loved” on it. It is a slice of heaven seeing an orphan no more–a child come into a family…and to HEAR the cheers of friends and family who have held your hand through the process…cried with you when delays happened…and rejoiced with you when you got a step closer! If you have birthed a baby–then you know how AMAZING that moment is! WELL…lemme tell ya! THIS is JUST as amazing!!! JUST as miraculous! And tonight I rang in the New Year welcoming one of my dear friends Melissa’s son home from Uganda! He is FINALLY home!!! I will NEVER forget the MOMENT she told me she had his referral!!! GUESS WHERE I WAS!!! I was on the RUNWAY in Atlanta LEAVING FOR ETHIOPIA to get my son! SOOO…she has waited…and waited…and waited for this day to get here! AND while you might hear fireworks tonight for the New Year…I do believe there must be fireworks in heaven too as the Lord promises to care for the orphan…He says in Psalms He sets the lonely in families…and tonight we got to see them come together!!!!

SOO…add THIS to your bucket list!!! Here’s ANOTHER beautiful home-coming! This is how WE do it…

The Young’s like to dress alike for homecomings:). Not to be cute–but because homecomings are CRAZY and full of excitement…and I have four kids that I don’t want to lose in the crowd! Aren’t they yummy?

THEN we make the drive to the airport…usually requiring a run through the Chic-fil-a drive through…and then another stop because we forgot something in our first run because of our excitement! Then we all run in the airport as if we are late for a flight…we find our friends…and normal people just wait—but we have fun with our friends doing things like this…Laney and Frank were dancing with Mary Taylor because her “twin” is coming home from Uganda. YES…she and Charles Tucker are the SAME age!!!!!

Sarah could hardly contain herself and she was telling me to step back behind the line…Sarah is from Uganda too so she wanted to be the first to greet Charles Tucker.

I give the kids lollypops to keep them happy…especially during a long wait…and when arrivals are after their bed time…

Frank likes to limbo…

We get our signs ready and we visit with dear friends…

THEN…the moment arrives!!!! And a family is finally together!

Henry is SO EXCITED to finally have his brother home!!!!!! (Dee was actually in Uganda with Melissa for the first TWO weeks she was there…and they took Henry AND Mary Taylor with them! They all got a little sick so Dee brought Mary Taylor and Henry home when he left in mid-December while Melissa stayed in Uganda with Charles Tucker to complete the adoption. SOOO…these brothers get to meet again! AND this time FOREVER!!!) How precious is THIS…

And that my friends—is how we do it!!! Oh my…it may be months until our next one…but how much fun these moment are!!!!! WHAT a way to ring in the new year!

For those of you following my sister’s journey in Ndola, Zambia…here is an unedited update from her—Day 4. I probably should edit it as I’m not sure the first part was actually for my blog–but I just have to share as I think it really shows the Lord’s heart for these people.

This is April’s sponsored child, Obrey, pictured with a lion mask one of her girls made him almost a year ago!!! He STILL has it!!! They treasure EVERY thing their sponsors give them!!!!

Okay… so I’d be the worst “blogger” because I’m already a little bored with myself BUT figured I’d let you know how today went ๐Ÿ™‚
I also think you get to a point on one of these trips where… well, what CAN you say? Iโ€™ve got more questions than answers- and the truth is, that may always be the case. I donโ€™t know much but I do know God loves His children and I know His plan is for those of us who can to help those who need it- we REALLY are HIS plan (Matthew 25:31-46). But HOW do we help? I know I can say, โ€œHere I am, Lord- USE ME!โ€. I can say that. But what does it look like? It looks different for each of us and then when you are ready and willing to help- sometimes the need seems so much bigger than anything you can even get your mind around. I just have to remind myself that GOD IS BIGGER! I can only do what I can- give my offerings as small as they may be over to our God who is a Provider, a Father, a Miracle Worker… and I know He is truly the Father to the Fatherless. I met a boy today who was rescued by Tuli One (a ministry birthed by a precious couple who first came to Zambia with Wiphan)- he is now living in a home and being cared for where as before we was sleeping outside. He was completely alone. An orphan- and NO ONE cared for him. Looking into big brown eyes like those- seeing their smiles; Iโ€™m telling you itโ€™s the closest Iโ€™ve ever been to truly seeing Jesus. I believe with all of my heart that that is exactly what Jesus meant in those verses in Matthew. WHEN YOU HELPED THEM, YOU HELPED ME. Jesus has never been more alive in me than in Africa. And a piece of my heart will always be here…

SO DAY 4…
Started the day at Sinia center. We had a meeting with Mary, Wiphanโ€™s nurse and learned of all of her (our) needs! They are great but I know God is greater and someone (maybe someone who reads this!) will say THATโ€™S what I want to do! She needs HIV testing kits, 2 separating screens, an examining table, a desk and lots of meds!
After our meeting, we headed to visit the 2 Tuli One homes. Got lots of pics for Tuli One in America since they were not able to join us on this trip (we miss them!). Met the caregivers and the children they care for. As you walk around in the compound there are dozens and dozens of children who flock to you- wanting to touch you, especially wanting you to take their picture and then show it to them. This NEVER gets old to them. I really think you could stand there all day and do this for them:)
We then headed back to the Castle Lodge and did some actual business (Boo!- Not really). Harris had a budget meeting and I got to spend lots of time with the Wiphan Zambia Board- hearing their needs, concerns and much more that I can share back home. So- Who wants to help me raise some funds for Bemba Bibles??? We need โ€˜em!!! Or help me get 300 more kids sponsored- Theyโ€™re waiting!!! And as I mentioned- add to Wiphanโ€™s Medical Clinic!!??
Tomorrow is our last day here and Iโ€™m not sure Iโ€™ll send an update:) Iโ€™ll definitely let you know when we have made it safely to Jo-burg before we board that flight. The flight home is 17 hours. Pray the person sitting next to me is very small. HA! Seriously, pray for safe travels, and always PLEASE continue to pray for Zambia!
Love you,
~April

WHEW…I’m wearing myself out!!!! Tonight…for Day 7 of the Magi’s Journey we read the final piece of the Magi’s journey from Matthew. They were finally made aware of Herod’s intentions and told to return to their countries by another route. We can guess it was a longer much harder route…can you imagine??? BUT this was God’s way of protecting them!!! Some times a harder route is simply God’s grace and goodness over us. We have to trust Him even in the hard times—that when we are His that He is for us…and if He is for us, then who can be against us? Praying as you journey through 2011 and hard things come–you will remember this part of the Magi’s journey and it’s purpose…and that one day you will see His grade and the purpose of the hard parts too.

MUCH love to you ALL in 2011!!!!! It has been a GLORIOUS year!!! And STINK! I was going to do a fun give away for my 400,000 blog visitor of 2011 and you guys made it roll over today without my realizing it!!! Happy New Year to you all near and far…and wishing EACH of you an amazing year…full of greater trust in your walks with Christ…a year of stepping out in faith…a year of seeing His sweet grace!!!! We have so much to look forward to…and I’m excited to share our joys and fun times with you all once again this year!!!!

XOXO!

Andrea
