Transracial Adoption and Attachment

On transracial adoption…a video I found that I think has value…(notice I said VALUE–not very exciting or “touchy/feely”…and this momma loves touch/feely…but I DO think there is some value in this one)…

These were ALL things we took very seriously when adopting transracially…

How would our family handle forever looking different (and how would be respond to the questions–and looks…not all approving…every where we went). Our family’s personality really did matter (and you can only imagine some of the funny or “wow” responses I give people who openly share their opinion with me.) I welcome strangers asking me sincere questions–but oh my…the not so nice looks from old white geezers…I just want to run and give them a big old hug and say THIS IS MY SON…WHOM I LOVE—and YOU look like you need some lovin’ on to!!!!!!!!!! And by the way…Jesus wasn’t white. AND if you believe in Santa…he isn’t either. HA! (Okay…just seeing if some of you are actually reading!)

Seriously–WAS our family ALREADY connected strongly with friends who “looked” like our son? This is important not as much for us–but FOR HIM!!! AND YES! We were! This was SO important to us!!! I’m not talking about you know Joe-Smo BUT that you are doing LIFE with people that look like your child…in the places that are most important to us…our neighborhoods, our schools, our churches. I wanted our son to have the joy of being able to go to THE barber (we have found an Ethiopian one!!! We’ll go there SOME…and other times…mommy won’t get to be the one to always take him because he can go with our friends and just feel normal!) AND church and…for once “not stand out”. NOW…Isaac hasn’t been able to mosey around town with anyone else BUT ME yes (because of attachment!) BUT…you better believe he will be spending LOTS of days with his godmother…and it just so happens one of my very best friends is African American—I heart you Momma Nisia and you know I couldn’t be on this journey without your love and support. It was important for us to have this very dear families support who also look like our son. VERY important for both us and him—but really for him mostly…which will also be for us as he gets to have that opportunity. As adoptive moms WE can say we don’t think this is a big deal—BUT talk to transracially adopted adults…or put YOURSELF in your day in and day out shoes of your sweetie…and before you know it–your mind is creatively thinking how you can put them in situations where they are treated like they some times long to be treated. (I know this can be uncomfortable for some people to process-and I was THIS close to NOT talking about…but it was on my heart…and I can’t always be Rosie fluff talk;). JUST sayin’.

Another question—would we be able to pour into HIS culture…which for us woud be a COMMITMENT…for our WHOLE family–committing to do things like take Arhamic lessons…travel to Africa (we already go once a year)…starting a Africa Family Fellowship…honoring Ethiopia holidays…and reaching out to Ethiopians in our community (YES, this would require LOTS of effort on our part!!!). Could we do this?? YES–it would be a commitment–but as we prayed we felt called to the challenge…it was one we felt called to!!! Imagine…God asking me to leave my comfort zone;). BUT it has been so god–AND we also have a long way to go!!! BUT thankfully we have the gift of time on our hands!!! (I always say if we adopt again I pray it’s from Ethiopia…because if the Lord calls us to adopt from the U.S. OR another country…I have ANOTHER culture to add…HOWEVER we could do it AND the Lord ALWAYS equips you for how He calls you! BUT just to be safe–Let me just cast my request of Ethiopia or the U.S. should He ask us to be crazy and grow again. I’d welcome the U.S. adopting transracially, too…because if you know me you KNOW I love me some Martin Luther King…and back when I was a middle school teacher I had his speech MEMORIZED and I’d shock my prodominantly white class by standing on my desk…giving that speech with gusto…and WITHOUT fail I ALWAYS got the standing ovation from my precious African American students (WHO by the way are some of my most favorite blog readers!!!)—I think God painted me the wrong color or something because I just LOVE the African American perservering tradition and soul in our country!)

I LOOOOOVE this next video the most of all!!!!! Transracial adoption IN NOTHING TO BE SCARED OF…but you absolutely have to be open to LIVING in a neighborhood where your child will be raised with kids that look like him, go to a church where your kids will see other kids and families that look like him (we go a church where our pastor is African American…there are also A LOT of transracial families AND lots of kiddos who have beautiful caramel skin just like my sweetie bug! SO important to us!!) There may be things you have to change in your life…maybe you don’t have to change EVERYTHING…but you might have to change some things–and that is part of the journey of being called to grow your family through transracial adoption!!! And IF you don’t live in a place that has a transracial family fellowship–then you do like we did… YOU START ONE!!!! It’s so awesome even for our biologocial kids to see other families who look like ours too!!! SO…I thought I’d end on you hearing from an “adult” who was adopted transracially. SO precious!

REMEMBER–1 John 4:18 “THERE IS NO FEAR IN LOVE. BUT PERFECT LOVE DRIVES OUT FEAR.” TRUST the Lord to provide–and don’t expect opportunities to just knock on your door!!! Adopting transracially–whether from the U.S. or ANY other country IS a commitment…but OH SO WORTH IT!!!!

I WAS going to share a bit on attachment…but I guess I had more to share on transracial adopted than I realized!!! SO attachment…later in the week if I get a chance!!! I have been talking with an amazing local attachment therapist—and this is so, so important to know about and how to help your little ones heal! She has clients who have brought home babies from the hospital (at DAY ONE) all the way to teens…and she even counsels adults who were adopted. She said THE ONE common thing these adults ALL say is “I wish my parents had known about attachment!!!” You will not NOT have problems with attachment because you bring home a baby–attachment begins in utero…BUT there are SO MANY things you CAN DO to help with attachment!!! We have made HUGE, HUGE, HUGE gains at our house…and it’s been A LOT of work–but this, too, is so worth it!! I’d rather have counseling NOW than later! But it is OKAY if we have it later too!!! WE ARE ATTACHING…and I’m so thankful this is something the Lord put on my heart in the early stages and opened my eyes too!!! This is something we HAVE to talk about…be willing to walk through…and be trained to help our little ones heal!!! AND–THROUGH HIS STRENGTH AND HAND…ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!!! MORE to come…I have to be rested for my night ahead-as you never know what it will bring…and part of our stage of attachment is not letting our little guy cry and meeting EVERY need. This is VERY different than parenting a child who has attached to me since utero…but there are gains EVERY day…and again SO WORTH IT!!! 6 months in and he now needs me to kiss booboos…he is LOOKING to me for healing…he REACHES for me when he gets hurt…he lays his head on my shoulder and chest when I rock him…he plays LOVINGLY with my hair when I sing to him…these are HUGE gains and we have worked so hard to get here—and while we have a way to go…it is so, so, so WORTH IT! SOOOOOO…be encouraged at whatever stage you are that perservering through those first stages really does pay off. More to come on attachment, etc soon! (I heart this topic!)

XOXO,

Andrea

I would love to read more about bonding/concooing etc with adoption. I have 5 bio children (2-11yrs) and we hope to adopt toddlers/babies (siblings 0-3) next year.
I love your blog-it is so ‘clean’ and of course what you write is so inspiring!

Thanks for this post! I’ve seen the second video before and loved watching the young man and his mom. Speaking of funny looks or comments from strangers… My kiddos are 8 months apart and are very close is size but um…well, not in looks. 😉 I’ve had several people ask me if they were twins…I wasn’t really sure how to answer, but at least they are looking past the color of their skin! 🙂

Lori - January 16, 2011 - 3:21 pm

Andrea –

Thank you so much for writing this!!! My husband and I have just received our referral for a 5 month old baby boy and are trying to figure out how to put so many of these things in place while we are waiting to bring him home. The first 2 books that I pick up have to do with transracial families and totally see how important it is to have a “transracial community” in place for them. Unfortunately, we live in a very Caucasian area of town and I am wondering if you have any suggestions on how to create this type of community. Moving, of course, not an option. We are slowly meeting other families that are also adopting from Ethiopia which is a start. I would love your input!

Thanks for sharing! I look forward to hearing more from you attachment entry!!!

Ronna - January 16, 2011 - 5:37 pm

Thank you for posting this. It was an amazing read and totally inspiring.

Sophie - January 16, 2011 - 10:35 pm

Great video!! We are in the process of adopting our second child, which will make this child #7 and our state requires classes and the woman on the 2nd video with her son, was the instructor. She is amazing, and just a wealth of information, she really has some wisdom going on! Thanks for posting, I’ll have to show my hubby.

Katie - January 17, 2011 - 10:18 pm

I too would love some info on starting a transracial family fellowship in a “seemingly” white town. Any suggestions??

Praise be and glory to God!!! HE. IS. WALKING!

Today marked a very BIG miracle in our house today…and I am overjoyed with excitement and thanksgiving!!! We have been praying our little guy would walk (he has hypotonia so we were guessing it’d be closer to two–and weekly we do physical therapy)…and HONESTLY–we have seen the MOST gains since getting our dog Rosie as Isaac just can’t get enough of her. Well, today he couldn’t stand it and when I put him down he just started walking to Rosie. I DO BELIEVE we have a therapy dog–and right now Rosie is the ONE thing we have that motivates him most! Seriously…who would have thought?!

MORE SO–Richard and I would have never guessed even yesterday or this morning that Isaac would walk today. He just started balancing a bit–and when we get him to move his legs by holding onto his hands they are so straight and choppy…well, we just thought we had a LONG way to go. Many of you know we have been praying that by some miracle he’d walk by February 15th—one year from the day he entered Hannah’s Hope orphanage and the day the first picture we have of him was taken. Seeing that picture–you really realize what a miracle our boy is. THIS time last year he was 5 months and UNDER 6 pounds…and on February 15th he was 6 months and just hitting 6 pounds. TODAY–he is 17 months and 25 pounds…and HAPPY, HEALTHY, and a CUDDLE BUG! Rejoice with us with all that God hath done!!! We are so proud of you Isaac Temesgen Young! (turn off music up top before watching…) ANOTHER cool thing is Aunt Reid had JUST gotten here…AND my dear friend Christy who has been one of our BIGGEST cheerleaders literally walked to the door while this was happening…I love how God orchestrating them to see this too and celebrate this really cool moment with us!

I love that God heard our prayers–but He knocked our socks off by bringing strength, balance and a new determination an entire month early than the date we had been praying for!!! REALLY?! My precious friend and travel buddy Marcy Smith said it best when I shared this news with her earlier today: “What a gift he is…what a picture of God’s blessings in and through the tough stuff. I feel like all of us adoptive families get a front row seat to his faithfulness! Before adopting a 1 year old…before trusting God with all the unknowns…before saying yes to this part of mommyhood–I. JUST. DIDN’T. KNOW. WHAT. I. WAS. MISSING! And here I thought–the blessings would be on our baby. Sure–I’m sure there are some…but the real blessings…OH MY HEART! And to watch my Parker get excited! And to see my Laney jump up and down and squeal with delight! To see Frank cheer Isaac on!!! They are all being shaped into through God’s glory right before my eyes…and I AM SO THANKFUL…SO THANKFUL—SO THANKFUL we said yes! Isaac Temesgen Young, YOU bring SO MUCH JOY to our lives sweet son!!! We love you to pieces–and we are so proud of every milestone you perservere to! Your stubborness–ALSO known as perserverence to not give up (whether it be to get that box of Cheerios out of the pantry and dump it out AGAIN or to not let anyone touch you while you TRY again)…is also what helped you make it to us…and I’m so thankful for the little man full of JOY and LOVE I’m watching you become!!!

Some things I will never forget on this journey to you, Isaac…

…when I LONGED for you so deeply and wondered if we were in the right place waiting…and the Lord so clearly spoke to me through scripture…oh such a sweet story you can read here

…when I read the story of Abraham and Isaac to your siblings during our Lent tree and my heart sank–and long before we got your referral…I felt the Lord whispering YOUR NAME. I knew you’d be a boy although we were on both lists. And I knew your name would be Isaac.

…when we got your referral call…(you can read about that joyous day here)…we said YES in our hearts LONG before we ever saw your face…I’ll never forget that plane ride with your daddy…or calling Kiersten our caseworker to say “YES! He is OUR son!!!!” I’ll never forget looking over the list of things you could do…and how at 8 months NOTHING was checked BUT ONE THING. ONE. The ONLY thing checked was “he smiles”. And what does Isaac MEAN??? YES…”he smiles”. I’ll never forget smiling sitting there realizing how perfect God is…how we said yes before we even realized that sweet detail…and how even more it made us long for you as we KNEW you were our Isaac…our son!

…when we called the international pediatrician and our little 8 month old couldn’t even hold up his head…over and over and over she would say, “Might he not ever hold his head up? Absolutely. Might he not ever sit? Absolutely. Might he never walk? Absolutely.” OH–the phone call SHOULD HAVE BEEN awful but I just couldn’t WAIT for her to be quiet so I could finally say, “BUT–is he our son?? ABSOLUTELY. So, if you could be so kind to write up everything you told me and email that to our agency asap–I would be forever greatful.” And just like that…our paperwork was on it’s way to the embassy to bring you home!

There are so, so, soooo many things I will never forget. Our journey and life with you, sweet boy, has been MIRACULOUS. AND today–was ANOTHER one of those sweet days! Thank you all for praying for us–celebrating with us…and loving us through the hard stuff and the exciting stuff. Praise be and glory to God in the highest for all that He has done!

I just HAD to watch THIS again today!!! TODAY made me think of all my travel buddies and their babies also! WHAT AN HONOR it is to celebrate this with you all especially. We “labored” together to bring home our children–and I love each of you dearly…Cheri, Meghan, Marcy, Lori…this one is for old times sake…I can’t BELIEVE in just 6 months how far our kids have come!

P.S. AND YES–for those of you who wondered…we are STILL iced in…and they cancelled school for the FIFTH (yes 5th!) day in a row!!!! Oh my. BUT…our little miracle moment today erased ALL our cabin fever and we are just so excited!!!! Obviously we just needed to be at home practicing walking I guess!!! Love to you all…and I have ANOTHER miracle story about the retreat!!! I’ll share that soon…but you all that are coming are going to be SO excited! Something in it for you all that can’t come too! God is THAT big!

P.S.S. It is SO much fun to read your comments to this one!!! Just read some and had to come back and say that:). Some of you have been praying with us and trusting with us in this since the very beginning! Some of you held your breath when we said YES because you knew how it might turn out…BUT you held your breath and cheered us and Isaac on! So many of you have prayed for us…and we are so thankful for YOU! Thank you for celebrating today with us. From the bottom of my heart…we love each of you dearly. Can’t wait to give many of you hugs in just a few weeks at the retreat!

woo hoo!! tears in my eyes. i’ve been away from blogland for awhile so i’m catching up. this has to be my favorite post!!! what a joyous celebration of god’s faithfulness and of grace he has given to work hard. i loved how the kids (and rosie) were right in there celebrating too. i love getting to celebrate with you from afar.

School cancelled…AGAIN! 4 days in a row now…oh my!

Sooo…tomorrow is Thursday–and school was cancelled AGAIN tomorrow because of the winter storm! It snowed about 7 inches at our house on Sunday night–but it’s not the snow that’s keeping everyone stuck at home but the ice on the road. SOOO…tomorrow makes 5 days we have been stuck at home! School is cancelled for the 4th day in a row tomorrow!!!

Our family was sitting around today all staring at each other–and we all agreed we were cross-eyed:). SO–we decided to do exactly what the radio stations have been asking people not to do–and venture out on the icey roads. Thankfully Richard has a 4-wheel drive truck with a cab that fits lots of carseats…so we explored out and about today. All the stores are closed other than groceries and gas–and those are still closing early.

We have officially used up all the playdough and paint in our house–and we found some clay and made clay creations. Are you guys getting worried about us yet??? You should be because the highlight of my day was making a purple clay snowman…which by the way was less than an inch tall. We went for record breaking of who could make the smallest creations today. All was going good with our clay creations…
UNTIL you know who thought it was candy…The Young’s are STIR crazy if you can’t tell! We did more sledding today (sorry folks…didn’t film this time:). BUT we did capture some of our sledding action via mommy’s camera today. Love this action…

YES. That is Frank in the background in a pink jacket and no pants. He is officially 2 years old and he pitched a fit to wear this get-up. I figured he wouldn’t last long…and he didn’t!And mommy was glad that someone else wanted to come inside and have some hot cocoa with her:).

OH MY…I just realized if school is cancelled on Friday that MONDAY is also a holiday for Martin Luther King Day. Seriously hoping the roads unfreeze and we can get out…you know the South doesn’t have the equipment to clear all the roads so most of us are stuck. We did have a few exciting moments in Richard’s truck sliding around–and Richard even now has some rescue stories that are pretty funny.

Hope you all are staying warm…and hoping and praying the ice melts here so this momma can take the mini-van out of the driveway! It’s been in the SAME spot since Sunday afternoon and I seriously don’t think it’d make it down our driveway without a little sledding action. I’m usually HORRIBLE at email—but NOW YOU KNOW if you have emailed me about the retreat stuff why I’ve been able to email right back! Some times I just hit refresh for fun:).

Oh a super fun side note…Isaac Temesgen Young is still progressing in physical therapy! He can now walk with someone holding his hands OR a walker! We have a very special walker we call “Frankie baby”! Seriously–is this not the sweetest things…brotherly love in it’s finest…

People often ask me how Frankie-baby has done with having a new brother as bringing home a 1 year old is much different than bringing home a newborn. They are JUST 9 months apart…and Isaac is the FIRST person he asks for when he wakes in the morning or after nap. You can see in that video how much he really cares for him and how proud he is of him!!! Sure–it’s the blind leading the blind some days…but they love one another and THAT is all that matters!!!

I feel like each day I am reminded of God’s goodness as we follow Him in the unknowns…as we step out in faith to WHATEVER He calls us to and just trust Him and follow. As Rich and I were having dinner tonight I just jokingly told him that I thought we should be pioneers for adoption to Zambia. This time he didn’t even spit out his food. He just looked at me and laughed…and said, “You better be glad you married me–because I’m the only person who can put up with your craziness.” I like to call it ADVENTURE…and I must say…I love being married to a man who is along for the ride as much as I am!

Hope you all have a Happy Thursday! If you know any funny jokes send them our way…we are getting really bored being stuck at home during this ice storm!

XOXO!

Andrea

Stir crazy, huh? If you’re REALLY bored….I got my camera for Christmas (decided on a Nikon)…but I still am pretty clueless as far as what I’m doing with it. You could always whip up some begginners lessons on photography for us newbies =)

Kim - January 13, 2011 - 3:27 am

It is hard to imagine ALL that snow across the South!
Incredible.
LOL at the photo of Frankie in that pink coat, no pants, and boots.
Great rehearsal dinner slideshow material!
And the video … oh that ITY! He has stolen my heart!
Love from your “adventurous” (aka CRAZY) sista in Hong Kong,
Kim

Makenzie - January 13, 2011 - 7:17 am

Seeing Isaac walking with Frank almost makes me want to cry!!! What a miracle 🙂

Lara - January 13, 2011 - 9:17 am

As much as I sympathize with your cabin fever, I am JEALOUS of all that snow. Our only version of being snowed in is during August when it’s 115 here and you can’t open the doors!

You just tell the weatherman there this snow better clear up by February 4!!

Kristin - January 13, 2011 - 9:17 am

Your family is so cute! The pic of Frank in the jacket and boots is priceless! I agree with Kim, def. a pic to keep for later. I also like reading the part about being reminded about God’s goodness as you follow Him in the unknowns…my family is kindof getting there and it’s a little scary. Your writing makes it not so scary!

Joy - January 13, 2011 - 10:14 am

Oh, Zambia! I would love to see that. Three years ago, at the optimistic beginning of our meandering maze of an adoption journey, we were so excited to see a Zambia program start in our province. It was “meant to be”, or so we thought. With friends who do children’s work in the country, and a World Vision sponsor child there (who we hoped to visit when we travelled for our adoption), and knowing that it was a new program with no “line-ups”, where adopting a child really meant making a difference…it just felt right. Within 9 months (when we thought we would at least have a referral, if not be travelling to or from Zambia), the program was essentially discontinued due to mandatory instatement of a 3-month residency period and lack of other processes being in place. I still feel a bit sad that we were not able to follow that dream, but will certainly follow anyone else’s Zambia adoption story with great interest and support!

Nordstroms - January 13, 2011 - 12:27 pm

Oh Frank!! I laughed out loud when I saw him in the pink coat!

Alison - January 13, 2011 - 4:01 pm

4 days in a row stuck at home…oh my, that is tough! We would be totally stir crazy too! 🙂

SleepyMom - January 13, 2011 - 4:16 pm

That picture of Frank really is priceless. My 2yr old has those same rain boots and also often likes to where his sister’s clothes – mostly her tuttu, plastic dress-up high heels, and her cheerleading costume. I always am sure to take a picture. 🙂
I feel your pain on being snowed in. Last year at one point my youngest and I (1 at the time) didn’t get to leave the house for 8 days straight and I mean not even step outside as the snow was too deep for him to walk in (when your 32″ tall, 2ft of snow isn’t really passable no matter what snow gear you have). It was terrible! Good luck for Friday.

Meredith - January 13, 2011 - 5:37 pm

That pic of Frank in the pink coat and no pants made me laugh out loud. I love it! And the video of your littles brought tears to my eyes. I love sibling love. So precious!!!!

Dee Dee Aarseth - January 13, 2011 - 8:15 pm

Oh Frankie Baby….you are beyond the cutest thing ever. I just want to eat that kid up!

Snow days!

The kids have been out of school all week because of snow…SOOOO…we have had plenty of time for lots of THIS…(yes–on snow days we take our wheel-barrow apart…that’s how country folks do it:)

AND THEN…when the kids get bored—Mommy and Daddy have taken over. NOW, I realize some of you might not know my “not right” side. SO…here’s a sneak peak into that:). Truly, Richard and I are a pair–and we do “not right” things to make our kids laugh…and we also enjoy laughing at ourselves! SO…if you are snowed in and you need a laugh–may I reveal our “Mommy and Daddy Snow Bloopers of 2011”! (PAUSE MUSIC UP TOP BEFORE WATCHING!)

Our kids don’t stand much of a chance with us for parents. Bless them. BUT one thing is for sure–we do a lot of laughing here and we rarely end up hurt. And yes–we could have and should have moved Richard’s truck–BUT it added an extra layer of fun for mommy and daddy bloopers…and a good laugh and some added suspence is what we like to add to our home videos:)

For those of you coming to the retreat…are you worried that this crazy lady is behind some of the planning? No worries…I have got some AMAZING ladies to keep me straight:). XOXO!

You had me laughing out loud (and I’m at work). Wishing I had some snow to play in but I don’t think it’s in the forcast for Orlando. Thanks for sharing.

Larisa Maibach - January 11, 2011 - 3:47 pm

Okay, this had me giggling. Yikealo (my 4 year old little Ethiopian who LOVES the snow) came in to see why I was laughing. He started watching with me and then looked up at me with a slightly confused look and said, “She’s not very good, is she? Mom, is she practicing?”

So cute, and it looks like you’re all enjoying your “unusual” southern weather! Thanks for sharing!

april - January 11, 2011 - 3:59 pm

april - January 10, 2011 - 11:44 pm

each and every one of those break outs sound amazing…i am so bummed i am missing this but we just couldnt swing it. I have a question…is there anyway even if its in rough form, these sessions could be taped so that those of us who could not make it but are eagerly wanting to learn the same info could buy the tape/CD of the messages?

Kim - January 11, 2011 - 12:54 am

Okay … I am soooo jealous. Just keeping it honest. Hong Kong has NEVER seemed so far away.
I need you girls right now and feel desperate for all this incredible information. Sweet Lucy has experienced a major set back since my trip to Cambodia. I thought she was ready and secure enough for Mommy to take her 1st mission trip away from home. Apparently not. I am in desperate need of support from those who have walked this road.
Cannot wait to hear about the event!
Love & Blessings,
Kim

Sandi - January 11, 2011 - 1:04 pm

WOW!!!! This covers all topics while keeping God right where He needs to be, in the center of it all! I used to organize seminars/speak before becoming a SAHM & I have to say that everyone involved in organizing this deserves some serious APPLAUSE! I am so thankful that there are people who are willing to sacrifice their time to help families who are about to embark on this rewarding journey. I will be praying that this is a spirit filled event that fills these mommas up. You have done an absolutely FANTASTIC JOB!!!!

Kelly - January 11, 2011 - 1:45 pm
