Maria’s Big, Big House {An amazing news story of hope…}

***Turn off music up top before watching news story below:)*** SO worth your watching…and so thankful that God opened our eyes–and is growing our family AGAIN. The world looks at us and says, “Seriously? Again?” And we proudly answer, “YES. AGAIN! Because she deserves to be a daughter…to have a family…and to be loved and protected. She deserves to be fought for and sought after. We are so blessed–and thankful to join other families like these in growing AGAIN!”

AND you can go to the Wright Family blog–the family also featured in this news story–by visiting HERE! I completely HEART the adoption community world! We are all connected in some way—our hearts of course…but she also knows my aunt…which makes this world even smaller and so much more sweet. Follow their journey to their sweet one…I can’t help but smile b/c he shares the name of my son Isaac:)

XOXO,

Andrea

God used Steven Curtis Chapman powerfully in our lives. It was at his concert in 2004 where my husband finally felt the call to adopt. He turned to me at intermission and said, “I am ready if you still are”. Two years later we welcomed Eliza from China. I will forever be so grateful to the Chapman family for their love of orphans!
Thank you Andrea for being His word and doing His work every day!!! I always look forward to what you have to share!

rebekah wright - May 17, 2011 - 7:15 pm

Thanks for sharing this {we were so honored to get to be a part of this segment}. I have commented here before and I am so inspired and encouraged by your family and your blog. {My mother in law works with Lesa Young at the pregnancy center, which is how I heard about you guys.} It is such a gift to hear about families like yours who share our heart for orphans and adoption and following where the Lord leads…even when the rest of the world thinks we are nuts:) Thanks for the ways that you share here!! Blessings to your sweet family!

Farrah - May 17, 2011 - 9:53 pm

Andrea, does she have an email address? I would love to talk to her about her domestic adoption. I couldn’t find one on their blog. But she may not want it out.

Kim - May 18, 2011 - 1:10 am

You are speaking my love language. Great video from our Hometown Heros!

Julie - May 18, 2011 - 11:47 pm

Just hopped over and noticed you were adopting from China. So excited for you!

Your family will sort of resemble mine!! ๐Ÿ™‚

A Place to Dream {art space for the littles}

When Rico Suave has to venture off for a work assignment for a few days–momma thinks its fun to create things and surprise him on a finished project. We have a spare room in our basement–that would make an ideal media room…only we aren’t really a “media” family. Sure we watch occasional movies…but we aren’t tv watchers and…if you know us well–you know we do a lot of crafts. SO–this extra room for us is becoming a place to dream and learn–and the first thing I wanted to add to the room was a place for the kids to do their art…something that works now and something that could grow with them a bit too. I found the perfect thing on one of my favorite learning websites called Playful Learning Spaces (Love her idea and educational philosophy!).

We decided to design our own art playful learning space…built by yours truly {sooo…we’ll see how good she holds up…you never know what a momma with a power drill and saw can pull off;}

Here is the finished art area…

To give you an idea of the SIZE–here’s my 5 and 6 year old standing on each size. I thought when I started building it that it’d be much smaller–but it can definitely grow with them!

A seperate art table from IKEA provides a place to do work, paint and draw if they would rather sit–and the buckets are easily transported to the art table…

Instead of offering markers as an option in buckets–we opted for colored pencils, chalk, scissors, regular pencils and sharpeners. As you may know, regular markers can ruin a dry erase board–and because we decided to use a dry erase board as the backing instead of a chalk board (I am not a chalk board fan b/c of the mess so we have a seperate portable chalk board easel that can be taken outdoors or placed on a vinyl mat). Not sure about your kids–but my kids love creating things with scissors, tape and glue–so I wanted to give them a few more options too:)

I have always loved the whiteboard practice board {we buy ours at Hobby Lobby}, and I found the containers to hold them in at the Container Store {I later found cheaper ones at IKEA…too late–but not to late for you;)}

So there ya have it folks–and more fun to come as we prepare our learning room in the basement for more fun!

If your wheels are turning and you want to mark this page for the future…here is the low down of where everything came from for this project:

White board from Home Depot. Go in knowing the EXACT size you want your board to be. Ours is about 5 x 4 foot. They will cut if for you and it’s just about $11 for that size:)
Towel holder from Home Depot. This will hold your paper roll. I went the cheap route and purchased an unfinished one b/c I was painting it anyway. Its just about $6 for the complete kit–includes screws also. You’ll have to sand it down a bit before painting.
Cork Board from Hobby Lobby. NOW…I bought this huge piece at first–because I liked it’s thickness. Going to use if for another project because this was TOO HARD to cut. SO–I found what you see in the finished version at Hobby Lobby. Perfect b/c it’s alreay cut 12×12 inches and it’s a great thickness. For a pack of 4 squares it was around $9…but if you print off the 40% off coupon online it’s around $6 instead:).
Liquid Nails from Home Depot. I set everything on the white board with Liquid Nails before securing with screws and let it set overnight.
Trim from Home Depot. Got the trim boards from Home Depot and really didn’t know what I was doing. My dad cut the corners for me–but Home Depot will do this for you also. I also set this with Liquid Nails and then went back and screwed the white board to the trim on the back.

As you can see (above) the square cork works so much better–and it’s done for you. I also added a little trim from Home Depot to seperate the organization space from the drawing space. The containers are from The Container Store–and I’ll use these to store writing boards and construction paper.

NOW…above is what I had to do to make a towel rack into a art roll holder. I was JUST about to put the towel rack to the board when I remembered that I’d have to able to remove rolls when paper ran out. Whew! Glad I remembered that. WELL…with Rico not here–I had to get creative. SO I pulled out a tiny saw and made a little wedge–and then sanded and painted it all white. It’s completely not ideal–and I’m sure your husband is shaking his head like mine did…BUT it works:)

I ended up putting the base on the wall first and then adding 3 “L” brackets to secure it under it also. That shelf could hold just about anything now as all the brackets are in studs too. I cut a space with the saw so the art board could slide on top and then fastened it to the wall. I was going to secure the holder to the art board–but I wanted more support for the base…and this worked:) You can of course do it however you like! My hubby and dad would both have disagreed with how I did this one I’m sure…BUT this was the only way it would really work with the trim–without starting the base over.

AND then I placed the completed art center on top. Secured it to the wall with screws into studs–and this bad boy isn’t going any where! The kids are already loving it!!! Next up…is our Wall Art Gallery…made with frames and cork board (the cork board I opted not to use). We have to have a place to display all their work…and we might even have an exhibition here and there for friends and family;).

Hope ya’ll had a great weekend!!!

XOXO!

Andrea

My husband is a builder and I’d never tackle something like this. You are my hero. I love this and I’m totally copying!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ Great job mama!

Alison - May 15, 2011 - 11:24 pm

Andrea, you totally amaze me! When Jody goes out of town, I just try to survive with the kids by myself! ๐Ÿ™‚ But I love that you build art rooms for your kids!!! I am truly amazed!

Elle J - May 15, 2011 - 11:45 pm

You are amazing. This is so fantastic and you did it all by yourself. I like the breakdown of where you got every.single.item. =) You rock!!! Happy Crafting!!!

Mama Mimi - May 16, 2011 - 2:40 am

This is totally awesome and inspiring – thank you for sharing!!! Makes me REALLY wish we had a playroom for the kids…because as much as I love it, I don’t think I want it on my living room wall. =)

Ia Williams - May 16, 2011 - 6:36 am

You are absolutely amazing. I love it

Christy - May 16, 2011 - 6:51 am

That is beautiful! How in the world did you get that done with your husband out of town? An all nighter or something? You are amazing!

Courtney - May 16, 2011 - 8:04 am

Love this idea! Don’t have any kiddos yet, but this will be a must when I do!

Elizabeth Smtih - May 16, 2011 - 9:12 am

Girl… really… where do you find the time? Amazing project! Wish I had room in my house!

Cara - May 16, 2011 - 9:12 am

Cute- love it!!!

SleepyMom - May 16, 2011 - 9:27 am

Have you seen the dry erase Crayons? They are awesome! I just bought some at Michaels because my 2yr old can’t be trusted with dry erase markers plus they smell bad and dry out if the caps get left out. The crayons work great and show up really well. I got the pack for a black dry erase board – ~$5 for a pack of 10.
Your art center is amazing! Would definitely not tackle that on my own.

Liz - May 16, 2011 - 10:01 am

This is sooooooo cool!!! You are a rock star! Thanks for the step by step…..I may pass along to my carpenter brother with 2 kids…maybe he could crank one of these puppies out! Such a cool idea!!!

Briana - May 16, 2011 - 10:12 am

Great job! This is amazing!

Every school teacher’s dream… ๐Ÿ™‚ Looks like you are going to have a nice homeschooling area maybe!?!? ๐Ÿ˜‰

A God of Joy…a God of details…

Have you ever thought about when someone tells you, “God has been putting you on my heart lately…” that you USUALLY think that to mean that you MUST be going through something hard so the Lord is putting you on someone’s heart to pray for. WELL…I really do believe He does that—but do you ever think about how God just LOVES you…how He just THINKS about you…how He just wants to be with you and celebrate you?! And some times He puts YOU on someone’s heart OR someone on your heart–because He wants to remind you and/or someone else just how much He cares about what is important to your heart…how much He loves…and how He remembers every detail of each and every one of His children.

He reminded me of that this morning.

I was taking my older two to school this morning…and I was just talking in my heart to the Lord. He laid a friend of mine on my heart–and I felt like He was telling me to contact her and tell her happy birthday. I know, weird right?! ESPECIALLY since I was certain her birthday was in April. NOW…if you are my good friend–then you know that I’m not only bad with names–but I’m horrible with dates, remembering just about anything and I’m late for just about everything. SO…when He said, “Contact her…tell her happy birthday”…I thought, “Well, thanks Lord! You just reminded me that I missed ANOTHER friend’s birthday so I am going to text her and gently get her to remind me when her birthday is…I’m going to WRITE it on my calendar this time…so I remember NEXT year…and I’ll work on being a better friend, ask for her forgiveness for forgetting…and then tell her happy late birthday!”

So…I texted her. And low and behold…the Lord was right! When I asked her to please remind me when her special day was because I had forgotten it…she said, “TODAY!” And I love that she didn’t think I was crazy when I told her what made me ask that–and who REALLY reminded me of her special day. (Happy Birthday Addie!) How crazy is that?!

This was just a beautiful reminder how He not only puts us on other’s hearts when things are wrong…but some times even when all is right. Just because He adores us. He loves us. And He wants to remind us how HE IS IN THE DETAILS. How He knows EVERYTHING about you. How He wants you to feel special and loved.

There’s not much I can promise to you as I don’t know who is reading this at this moment–but what I can promise you is this…God knows everything about your current situation RIGHT now…and He is already all over it. You have no need to worry…and you can rest in His perfect promises and plans. He wants you to come to Him not only when things are wrong…but also when things are right. He wants you to cry out to Him and dance before Him with joy. He wants you to know His voice…and to recognize when He is speaking to you…and to live in communion with Him.

God is THAT Big…THAT good…and He really is real. Isn’t it AMAZING to know there is more to life than just what you see?! Oh to live for eternity and to store our treasures in heaven!!! No better way to live my friends!!!

Hope you all have a wonderful day!!!

XOXO!

Andrea

P.S. Now…some of you might think 1) I’m crazy to hear the Lord tell me it’s somebody’s birthday and 2) We’re crazy that we are adopting AGAIN. Well, just so you know–we ARE crazy. That’s the way we roll. You only live once…so we chose crazy. AND the same voice that told my heart it was a dear friend’s birthday–and it was important to Him to remember…is the SAME voice that told my heart we have a little girl in China–and it is important to Him that we grow again and get her. I want to follow Him in the small things AND the big things…don’t you?! Oh…to live for Him…there is nothing sweeter!

Beautiful post Andrea! I love hearing the little everyday ways that God speaks to his children…it is always SUCH an affirmation of His great love for us.

Kim - May 13, 2011 - 11:44 am

What a beautiful blessing to be in tune with His voice.

Rory Cookman - May 13, 2011 - 12:12 pm

I think you are a good kind of crazy and I 100% believe God speaks to us like that, so it was encouraging to read someone else experiences that too. God does care about every detail and thank you for reminding me as I’m preparing to hold down the fort with 4 little ones while my husband goes away again for work…I know God is already there, prepared and ready for me in all the highs and lows of the upcoming week. “Oh how He loves us” keeps rolling around in my head…
Love,
Rory

Dawn - May 13, 2011 - 10:19 pm

I don’t think you are crazy….but that may be because I totally get it. ๐Ÿ™‚ I think that probably means I am crazy too ๐Ÿ™‚ he he he…there are much worse things to be! ๐Ÿ™‚

Vanessa - May 14, 2011 - 9:59 pm

Love it!!! Thanks for the reminder that God is in the details!

Kerry Gautraud - May 15, 2011 - 11:07 am

We chose crazy too! Nothing better than storing our treasures in heaven!! Not everyone understands the joy and peace that comes with “crazy” but God does and I believe He smiles upon it. Thankful that you share so openly about listening & obeying His voice in the big & little things…to Him be the glory!!!

Sandi - May 15, 2011 - 6:36 pm

Wow-another example of God speaking to my heart through you. I prayed for hours last night about this very subject. God places people on my heart and I feel their pain, then I am called to help them financially, encourage them and pray for them day and night. Often it is strangers and there is no way other than God that I could know the details of why they are hurting or exactly how to help. I was asked to send my testimony to the church as part of the “membership requirements” and have really, really been torn as to what exactly to reveal. If I am truthful my story is full of miracles but it sounds crazy, unbelievable Unreal!

Shelly - May 17, 2011 - 11:15 pm

I chose crazy too. And that’s how we roll. Love you dearly, sweet friend.

Bare-foot and “Paper-Pregnant” in the kitchen…

Besides the fact I’m wearing a Christmas apron (I’m getting extra wear out of it Mama Judy;), I always think to myself when I’m barefoot and cooking, “Now, if only I were pregnant;).” I totally thought that today…and realized I kinda am:). SO…Rich came home and I said, “Look honey! I’m barefoot and expecting–and in the kitchen!” I think he ALMOST had a heart attack–because he responded, “What do you MEAN you are expecting?!” HA! Just paper-pregnant silly husband!!!

Still this picture from tonight made me smile–and I love my little ones help me prepare the dinner table for our meal. Parker and Laney usually help me cook and set the table…Isaac snacks and Frankie baby–who knows what Frankie baby is doing! Trust me…he wasn’t washing dishes up there:) The dinner table is definitely one of my favorite times in our day…and to hear Frank’s blessing–where he repeats “Amen” twenty times before shouting one final “AMEN!”…ahhh–just another thing I treasure and know I will miss terribly one day. So thankful for these moments…and can’t wait to have another honey home to celebrate it with.

Hope you all have a happy Thursday:)

XOXO,

Andrea

P.S. I have an allergy tip for those of you having serious allergies this season. I have horrible allergies in the spring and summer. Taking a dose of LOCAL honey and/or bee pollen can help tremendously!!! I take 4 pellets of bee pollen every morning with my OJ. It MUST be local honey or bee pollen to help…

I’m actually OFF my normal Zyrtec dose and riding it out all natural with bee pollen this year:). Much better for me. I bought mine at a local natural store. If you don’t have one…I guess you can just go look for pollen and lick it or something every morning. But you might want to take a healthy probiotic if you go that route;)

Love it =) {Love your KITCHEN too!!!}

Kim - May 12, 2011 - 3:59 am

Amen. Our family gathered around the dinner table is my favorite part of everyday!

jenn - May 12, 2011 - 9:44 am

At least Frank actually prays. Sam yodles at EVERY meal. So strange…but I guess I should be thankful he is contributing ๐Ÿ˜‰ If you continue to wear the apron a few more months you can celebrate Christmas in July. You look good barefoot and pregnant!

Debra - May 12, 2011 - 8:38 pm

Oh how funny and look at Laney on her tippy toes!

He loves to swing…

Some of the things I never want to forget…

He loves to swing…but oh MY–he really just ‘hangs’…(oh my–is that baby belly hanging out from under his shirt???)

And after he hangs over…he chills…

And that is my low muscle tone love. BUT you just wait…he’ll be hard for them to knock over on the football field one day:)

Not so sure he’s really ready to get out here…

Alright–and this next picture is for my sisters. DOES THIS BRING BACK MEMORIES GIRLS??!?!!

My dad is the father of THREE girls. He coached us all in softball–and while none of us went on to play in upper grades…sweet daddy kept coaching well until I was graduated from college. “You gotta keep your EYE on the ball…no matter what…” It was sweet to sit back and watch him whole-heartedly work with his first grandson this weekend. I’ll say one thing about my dad is he makes you BELIEVE you can do it. I mean…I’m not sure how eventually told me that I was made to sing the songs on the bench–because daddy-o had me believing I could do anything I set my mind to. BUT softball (or sports in general for that matter) were not for me or what this girl was made to do. BUT I can still recite EVERY softball chant and song to this day:).

Thankfully, P-man takes after his daddy when it comes to sports…

And with 3 boys–someone just needs to remind me to wear sunscreen because I have a growing farmer’s tan from all these ballgames. And I wouldn’t have it any other way:).

Y’all have a great day!!!!

My little guy is on the Reds this year too! We are having so much fun watching him play. He loves the game!

Shannon - May 19, 2011 - 9:11 am

Hey there Andrea. I often think of you when thinking about ‘low muscle tone issues’ around here. Ok- ITY not you- but you get my point. Anyway one thing that helps that core strength- as you probably know is belly time and crawling stuff. A way to help keep them low and crawling- TUNNELS! Anytime I can get Teg in a tunnel play thing we do it. If it’s tall enough he’ll naturally attempt to stand and bend over- where others will naturally stay low and stay on all fours- but it works for a while anyway. Plus its’ great fun! Anyway- was thinking of you
